This invention relates to hair curlers and is particularly adaptable for use for curling the hair of the head where it is desired to have the curls close to the scalp.

The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a hair curler having a body provided with a plurality of slots with a keeper member universally pivoted on one end thereof having teeth engageable in said slots when the hair is rolled thereon; to provide a device of this character for selective operation of the keeper so as to engage in a particular slot as desired for loose or tight curls of the hair; to provide a body member having a slotted arm pivoted thereon for engaging the end of a strand of hair as the hair is rolled on the body member, said arm with its slot being in alignment with one of the slots of the body member; to provide means for piv-otally mounting the tooth arm on one end of the body member; and to provide a device of this character simple, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation.

In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a perspective View embodying the features of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the body member showing the arm in section and the keeper having the teeth engaged in one of the slots of the body member.

Fig. 3 is an end view of the pivoted keeper.

Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 44, Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view, similar to Fig. 4, showing a strand of hair as it is started to be rolled thereon.

Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 with the hair rolled tight to the scalp and the pivoted toothed arm in engagement therewith.

Referring more in detail to the drawings:

I designates a hair curler embodying the features of my invention comprising a hollow body 2 having longitudinal slots 3, 4, 5. and 6 longitudinally thereof terminating intermediate of the ends I and 8 of the body member. The ends of the body member are open as indicated at 9 and I and the end 9 is provided with spaced ears I i and [2 formed integrally with the end I of the body member. Pivotally mounted between the ears II and [2 by a pin I3 is an arm l4 provided with a slot l extending longitudinally thereof and terminating intermediate the ends of said arm. The arm is of a length substantially the 2 length of the body member, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. The arm 14 and slot I5 are in substantial alignment with the slot 6 of the body member. The pivoted end of the arm M is rounded as indicated at [6 so the arm will lie flat against the body 2 of the device when in use.

An arm or strap l'l extends across the open end Ill of the body 2 and is formed integral with said end. The arm I! is provided with an opening adapted to receive a pin Hi to which is pivotally attached a U-shaped bracket It, the arms 20 of which are provided with openings adapted to receive a pin 2! to which i pivotally mounted a keeper or arm 22. The opening in the strap or arm I1 is positioned coaxially with the tubular body 2 so as to accommodate the pin or rivet iii to rotatively support the bracket and universally mount the keeper 22.

The keeper 22 comprises an arm 23 having the pivoted end curved as indicated at 24 and depending from the underside of said arm is a plurality of teeth 25 adapted to engage within one of the slots 3, l, 5, and B of the body member 2 and also extend through the slot l5 in the arm l4 when slot is selected. The outer end of the keeper is curved upwardly as indicated at 26 to provide easy handling thereof.

The curler may be constructed of plastic, metal, or other light weight material as desired.

Operation of a curler constructed and assembled as described is as follows: The arm 14 and keeper 22 are moved outwardly from the body member 2 so that a strand of hair 21 may be inserted around the body member, the loose ends 28 thereof extending slightly beyond the pivoted arm I4 as indicated in Fig. 5, and said arm pressed down against the hair on the body member. The body member is then rolled so that the hair will be wound therearound and around the arm Mas best illustrated in Fig. 6. The body portion is wound close to the scalp, indicated at 29, if desired. The teeth 25 of the keeper 22 are moved into engagement with the hair and through one of the openings 3, 4, 5, and 6, nearest the scalp as desired for a tight curl of the hair, as best illustrated in Fig. 6. Should the opening 6 of the body member be the one which the keeper is desired to be engaged in, then the teeth must extend through the slot l5 in the arm [4 as well as the slot 6.

It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved curler having a universally mounted keeper having teeth adapted to engage the body member to hold the hair, curled at a desired length from the scalp, and one which 3 may be used both for tight or loose curling of the hair.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A hair curler comprising, a tubular body for winding a strand of hair thereon to curl the same, a plurality of longitudinal slots in said tubular body, said slotted portions terminating short of the ends of said body, spaced ears secured to one end of said body, an arm pivoted to said ears on said body and being capable of lying substantially flat on said body for holding the end of a strand of hair while the hair is being wound around said body and said arm, said arm having a slot longitudinally thereof aligning with the slot in said body, a strap secured to the other end of said body, said strap having an opening at substantially the center thereof, a U-shaped bracket pivotally mounted in said opening, and a keeper mounted in said bracket, said keeper having a plurality of teeth for engaging through said strand of hair and into one of said slots in said body for holding the curler in said hair.

A hair curler comprising, a tubular cylindrical body having open ends and a plurality of spaced longitudinal slots terminating intermediate said ends, spaced ears secured to one of said open ends, an arm having one end pivotally mounted to said ears and being capable of extending along and lying substantially flat on said body, said arm having a longitudinal slot terminating intermediate the ends of said arm and aligning with one of the slots in said body for holding a strand of hair while the hair is Wound on said curler, a keeper universally mounted on the other end of said body, said keeper having a plurality of teeth extending from one side thereof for engaging through said slot in said arm and said strand of hair and into a selected slot in said body for holding the curler in the hair and said hair in curled condition.
