As will be explained more, fully, hereinafter, this ad; vantage, is achieved by offsetting the curve offth'e gnardc. froml that of the l spring to substantially eliminate anyiangleinvwhichithe hair may catch.
It ,is-,a further object of the invention toprovide'means whereby a single screw connects the winding, arm tothe, handle and connects the handleto the mandrel in one operation;

2. As a new article of manufacture, a onepiece spring arm and guard for a hair curler comprising a strip having a longitudinally extending tongue struck from a portion of the strip intermediate its sides and ends, side portions of said strip being reversely bent upon themselves at the base of the tongue and the said tongue continuing beyond the reverse bend of said side portions and having a reverse bend of its own at a point offset from the bend of said side portions, and further having a terminal portion extending longitudinally of the strip in spaced relation to the side portions thereof.
3. The device of claim 2 in which the reverse bend of the tongue is of larger radius than the reverse bend of said side portions.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a combinationspring arm and guard member for use in a hair curler, said member comprising a strip having a substantially rectilinear portion and having beyond said portion an elongated slot intermediate its side portions and ends, each of said side portions being provided with a reverse bend at one end of said slot and thence extending in substantial parallelism and in spaced relation to the substantially rectilinear portion of the strip, said strip having an integral tongue extending from its said rectilinear portionat one end of the slot beyond said bends, said tongue being provided with a reverse bend and a terminal guard portion spaced outwardly from the rectilinear portion and side portions of said strip and extending longitudinally of the strip in a rearward direction from the reverse bend of said tongue.
5. The device of claim 4 in combination with a mandrel along which said strip extends and a knob rotatable upon the mandrel and provided with a screw connecting the knob with said strip for the rotation of its said rectilinear portion about the mandrel, the said strip having a terminal with a tapped opening in which said screw is threaded. v
6. The combination with a mandrel having an annular channel near one end, of a knob having a socket in which the channeled end of the mandrel is disposed, said knob having a recess opening into said socket and a substantially radial hole opening into the recess, a spring arm extending longitudinally of the mandrel and having an anchorage portion in the recess between the mandrel and the knob, said anchorage portion being provided with a tapped hole, and an anchorage screw extending through the radial hole of therknob into the tapped hole of the anchorage portion of said spring arm and in threaded connection with said arm, said screw having a terminal portion projecting beyond said arm into the channel of the mandrel for rotatably positioning the knob on the mandrel.
'7. A hair curling device comprising a mandrel, a collar member rotatably mounted at one end of the mandrel, a winding member fixed to the collar member, said winding me r Comprising an arm member secured at one end to the collar member and extending parallel to the mandrel and reversely bent at its free end to provide a guard member, the said arm member being provided intermediate its ends with a spring clip member integral at one end with the arm member at a point adjacent the guard member and extending in parallel and spaced relation to the arm member to provide a hair receiving opening, the free end portion of the spring clip member being provided with a reversely curved offset portion which resiliently engages the arm member whereby a tress of hair may be removably received between the arm and clip members.
8. In a hair curler of the character described comprising in combination, an elongated generally circular in cross section barrel, a groove in said barrel around the circumference and near one end thereof, a relatively short sleeve rotatably mounted on the barrel and extending over said groove, a tuft of hair engaging member comprising an elongated thin flat member having spring characteristics andextending to within a short distance of the other end of the barrel and lying parallel to and substantially on the barrel, said collar having a keyway with a depth and width adapted to snugly receive one end of said hair engaging member, a hole in said collar in alignment with said keyway, a hole in one end of said hair engaging member in alignment with the hole in the collar, a pin adapted to be held tightly in the hole in the collar and extending through the hole in said engaging means and into said groove, said engaging member comprising a single strip of fiat material and lying generally longitudinally in contact with the barrel and extending to within a short distance from the other end of the barrel, the remainder of the strip being split into two elements, an end'of one element being out free at one end a distance from the free end of the strip and being curved outwardly at its other end and toward the end of the strip, the other element being curved at a'smaller radius and extended parallel to the base for a distance toward said collar and then being curved for contact with the base member. forming an opening and then being extended outwardly at an acute angle forming an entrance way into said opening, whereby the tuft of hair may be inserted into said opening and wound around the barrel until all of the tuft of hair is formed into a curl and positioned under said base member.
9. As a new article of manufacture, a onepiece spring arm and guard for a hair curler comprising a strip having a longitudinally extending tongue struck from a portion of the strip intermediate its sides and ends, side portions of said strip being reversely bent upon themselves at the base of the tongue and the said tongue continuing beyond the reverse bend of said side portions and having a reverse bend of its own at a point offset from the bend of said side portions.
