PETER REYNARD AND VICTOR VARIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INSECT-POWDER BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,055, dated November 8, 1859.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER REYNARD, of the city of New York, and VICTOR VARIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Insect-Powder Blowers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, is a vertical section of our improved powder blower, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in a holder for facilitating the use of this powder blower at a distance from the operator.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Our said invention comprises improvements on our patent of September 20th, 1859, and consists in a peculiar manner of applying the elastic ball and also in providing means for holding the powder blower and operating it at a distance from the person, so that partitions or closets in high rooms can be cleansed of vermin by the said powder, or the same apparatus may be used for removing vermin from trees and plants.
In the drawing a, is a powder chamber or neck onto which the nozzle 6, is attached by a slip or screw socket; to the lower end of this neck or chamber a, the elastic ball 0, is attached, and (Z, is a plate or button at the other side of the elastic ball 0, against which the operator presses to throw the powder out from the nozzle 6, by the current of air.
In order to provide for the ball filling rapidly with air as it dilates I make use of a valve opening inward as at 1, Fig. 1, and the valve 2, opening outward between the elastic ball and the chamber a.
The operation of this apparatus will be apparent, for when the ball 0, is compressed the current of air blows out the powder and carries it into the crevices and spaces where roaches, insects, &c., generally congregate. l/Vhen the space to be thus powdered is out of convenient reach, or when the operator wants to keep at a distance from the ver min, we provide a rod 6, of the length required, at the end of which a ring f, receives the powder blower a, by L shaped slots and pins or equivalent attachments.
g is a rod passing through the rod 6, or at the side thereof, at the end of which a button h, is provided so as to press against the button d, and blow out the powder. A spring 2', may be provided by which the operator is aided in moving the rod g, to we pel the powder. A cord or string might be substituted for the rod 9, when the spring 2', is sufiicient for compressing the ball, and if the spring 2', is dispensed with the rod 9, must be forced forward and withdrawn by the hand of the operator.
Having thus described our said invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The ball 0, attached directly to the chamber or neck 6, and acting to blow the powder out of the neck or chamber as set forth, and eitherwith or without the valves 1, and 2, for the purposes and as specified.
2. e claim the holder composed of the rod 0, and ring 7, when provided with the rod 9, or its equivalent and the button h, to act on the elastic ball 0, for the purposes and as described and shown.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our signatures this tenth day of October P. REYNARD. V. VARIN. WVitnesses:
THos. GEO. HAROLD, CHAS. H. SMITH.
