.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MIQHAEL MARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSECT-POWDER BLOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,924, dated March 5, 1878 application filed January 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL MARK, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Insect-Powder Blower, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation, partly in vertical central section, of my improved insect-powder blower.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved insect-powder blower by which the powder is distributed at will in greater or smaller quantities, and in minutely-divided state, at the places where it is wanted, so as to do more efiective service against bugs and insects that are sought to be destroyed; and the invention consists of a barrel closed by a perforated stopper, that is out out conically at the inside, and re-enforced at the apex of the conical cavity by a perforated metal disk or diaphragm. The barrel is provided with projecting side shoulders or-finger-rests, and with a sliding and spring-acted piston and piston-rod, having head or thumb rest at the outer end.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a barrel of suitable size, of metal or other suit able material, that is filled with insect-powder, and closed at one end by a piston, B, operated by a piston-rod, O, and at the opposite end by a stopper, D, of cork or other material, that is securely retained by a metal screw or other cap, D, on the barrel A. The stopper is centrally perforated, and the inner end of the same hollowed or cut out in conical shape, the hollowed-out portion serving to conduct the insect-powder, without packing, fiom the barrel to the exit-perforation. A perforated metal disk or diaphragm, a, is forced into the cork, to be retained at the apex of the conical cut-out portion, so as to regulate, by the smaller hole of the same, the uniform escape of the powder better than it could be done by the perforation of the stopper. The piston-rod O .is cushioned by a spiral or other spring, I), that is placed between the opposite barrel end and the enlarged end or thumb-rest d of the pi ston-rod 0, so that after each pressure thereon the spring carries the piston back again.
The barrel A has sidewise-projectiug supports or rests E, for the fingers, so that the device is easily operated by placing the middle fingers thereon and working the piston by the pressure of the thumb on the thumbrest of the piston-rod.
A greater or less pressure of the thumb causes a greater or less quantity or cloud of insect-powder to be expelled through the exithole of the stoppers, which secures its minute distribution, so as to do more effective work, and form an easily-operated and superior blower for insect-powder.
The same device may also be used as a common pop-gun for children, and as a parlorgame, by using in one case a common cork and in the other case a winged cork with pin or sharp point, and a target.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The barrel A, provided with finger-rests E, in combination with the spring-acting piston 0, provided with a thumb-rest, 0!, whereby the blower may be operated .by hand, as set forth.
MICHAEL MARK.
