Description

1955. s. w. FOSS ETAL NOZZLE SUPPORT FOR LIQUID DISPENSER NOZZLES, INCLUDING MOTOR swucn mmnwcx Filed April 15- .1950
'BURDETTE W. Foss ScoTr L. HUNTER INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent O NOZZLE SUPPORT FOR LIQUID DISPENSER NOZ- ZLES, INCLUDING MOTOR SWITCH INTERLOCK Application April 15, 1950, Serial No. 156,208
Claims. (Cl. 222-75) This invention relates to a nozzle support. More specifically, it relates to a nozzle support for a liquid dispenser which prevents the nozzle from being inserted when the motor switch is in the on position and which is cleared for replacement of the nozzle when the switch is moved to the oft position.
It is an object of the invention to provide a mechanism which is simple and inexpensive.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure which is positive in operation.
Another object is to provide a nozzle boot and motor switch which are mounted directly upon the motor.
Yet another object is to provide means for simultaneously operating the switch and nozzle lockout mechanlsm.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing movement of the switch to on position when the nozzle is in the boot.
These and other objects will become apparent from a study of this specification and the drawings which are attached hereto and made a part hereof and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with the nozzle in place in the boot. 1
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the structure of Figure 2,
viewed from the right thereof with the nozzle removed.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of a modified form of boot.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 3, the numeral 1 repre sents an electric motor which is used to drive a pump (not shown) of any suitable type. The end bell 3 of the motor has fastened to it, by any suitable means, such as screw 5, a switch housing or cover 7. p p
The switch 6 is mounted within the end bell and is operated by a shaft 9 and wrist plate 11. armed lever 13 is fixed to the Wrist plate and each arm 15, 17 is perforated.
The arm 15 has pivotally connected to it'a rod 19 which extends through 'and is guided in an opening 21 in one side wall of the cover while a second rod 23 is pivotally connected to arm 17 and extends through an opening 25 in the opposite side wall of the cover.
A knob 27 is fixed to the outer end of rod 23 and has a depending, perforated ear 29 which is parallel to and beside a perforated ear 31 which is fixed to and projects from the cover 7. A common padlock may be usedto lock the ears together and. the switch in the off position.
A nozzle boot 33 having an end wall or stop 30 is made integral with or attached to, the cover 7. It may, of course, be attached to the end hell if desired. The boot is long enough to receive the nozzle tip 35' and preferably the outer end of 37 of the nozzle body 39 which is provided with an upwardly and r'earwardly extending Y hook 41. Y
'The boot is provided with a transversely extending nozzle support member 43 which is adapted to receive the hook 41. The distance from the end wall or stop 30 of the boot to the member 43 'is slightly greater than the distance from the end of the nozzle tip to the'tip of the hook 41. The hook of the nozzle may be engaged with the support member by pushing the nozle into the boot, lifting it to raise the hook above the member and withdrawing the nozzle to engage the hook and member.
' It will be seen in Figure 3 that the rod 19 extends into the boot so as to obstruct the insertion of the nozzle when the'switchis on.
A double "ice When the switch is off the rod will be withdrawn as shown in Figure 2 so that the nozzle may be inserted and supported as described.
It will also be seen from Figure 1 that the rod is so disposed, relative to the nozzle when the latter is supported in the boot, that it cannot be projected into the boot so that the switch cannot be moved to the on position when the nozzle is on the support.
Operation Assuming that thepump is in the locked up condition, the operator will first remove the padlock and remove the nozzle from the boot by pushing it into the boot until hook 41 disengages the support 43 and lowering the body of the nozzle so that when it is withdrawn from the boot thehook will pass under the support.
The switch knob 27 is then grasped and drawn to the Figure 3 position. Rod 23, arm 13, plate 11 and shaft 9 actuate the switch to start the motor. Arm 15 projects rod 19 into the boot so that the nozzle cannot be inserted.
When dispensing is completed, the knob will be pushed in to the Figure 1 position to move the switch to the OE position and withdraw the rod 19 from the boot.
The nozzle is then inserted in the boot until the end of the tip strikes the end wall or stop 30 and hook 41 clears support 43, israised and drawn outwardly to engage the hook on the support. The switch knob 27 cannot be drawn out far enough to start the motor because the rod 19 strikes the nozzle and is stopped.
Modified form A modified form of boot is shown in Figure 4, in which the closed end of the boot 51 is of stepped formation. The lower portion of the boot is made so that the distance from the end wall 53 to the support 55 is greater than the distance from the tip 35 of the nozzle to the tip of the hook 41 while the distance from the wall 57 to the member is less than the distance from the'tip of the nozzle to that of the hook.
The pin 19 enters the boot in a position about one quarter of the distance from top to bottom of the boot and between support 55 and end wall 57.
Operation Assuming that the pump is locked up, the nozzle can be removed from the boot by being tilted counter-clock- This turns the switch on and projects the rod 19 into the boot so that the nozzle cannot be moved into the boot far enough to engage wall 53.
When dispensing is completed, the knob 27 must first be pushed to the Figure 1 position. This withdraws the rod 19' from the path of the nozzle tip which may now be moved into the boot until it strikes wall 53, lifted up until hook 41 is in contact with the upper wall of the boot and then pulled outwardlyto engage the hook and support.
The weight of the nozzle and hose then rotates the nozzle about the support so that the tip will move to the Figure 4 position adjacent wall 57 so that a movement of the hose or a jar or vibration will not readily dislodge it.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the form, structure and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, applicant does not desire to be limited to the specific embodiment disclosed herein primarily for purposes of illustration; but instead, he desires protection falling fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
