SLICING DEVICE WITH REMOVABLE CUTTING ELEMENT Filed March 27, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG. 5.
INVENTOR.
5. LEONARD POLKOSNIK AT TO R N E75 3 Cutting element 36 comprises parallel transverse legs 37 which are formed into hooks 38 at their upper ends. These legs 37 are connected at their lower ends and also just below hooks 38 by a pair of transversely spaced, parallel, lateral arms 39. Said legs 37 and arms 39 provide a preferably square frame within which any desired cutting members may be mounted. In the embodiment shown, the cutting members take the form of transverse planar legs 40 and lateral planar arm 41, which collectively form a grill having square openings. The minor axes of said legs 40 and arms 41 extend longitudinally, so that the rear edges thereof, which may optionally be sharpened, strike an object pushed forwardly by pusher plate 20.
Each said hook 38 has a shank 42 which extends upwardly from the rear portion of the top edge of leg 37; an arm 43 which extends forwardly from shank 42 and which is transversely spaced from the top edge of leg 37; and a catch 44 which depends from arm 43 and which is transversely spaced from the top edge of leg 37 and longitudinally spaced from shank 42. Hook 38 is substantially planar. The drawings are substantially to scale of a preferred embodiment; and reference is made thereto, in particular to Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 6, for the exact shape of hook 38. While it is noted that the interior space of hook 38 is shown in Figs. 4 and 6 as substantially convex and as approximately conforming in part to the curvature of rod 24, it will be apparent that this is not essential.
Cutting element 36 is mounted on rod 24 with hook shanks 42 positioned behind rod 24, with hook arms 43 resting thereon, and with catches 44 positioned forwardly thereof. Lower arm 39 is in substantial longitudinally registry with the front edge of base and is preferably slightly spaced transversely from connecting plate 16. Each side wall 11 has its front portion cut away and inturned in two places to form transversely spaced, lateral lugs 45 which are positioned in front of leg 37. As a result, cutting element 36 can turn slightly about the axis of bar 24; but the clockwise movement of element 36, as taken in Fig. 4, is stopped by lugs 45, the counterclockwise movement by the front edge of base 10. Longitudinal movement of the upper part of element 36 is substantially prevented when hooks 38 rest upon bar 24.
In order to remove cutting element 36 for cleaning or replacement, it is raised until rod 24 is positioned longitudinally opposite the respective openings between catches 44 and the top edge of upper arm 39. This opening is higher than the diameter of rod 24. The upper part of element 36 may then be pushed rearwardly until hook 38 is clear of rod 24, after which element 36 may be withdrawn transversely from the device. The removal steps may be reversed in order to re-mount element 36.
While I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention and have indicated various changes, omissions arid additions which may be made therein, it will be apparent that various other changes, omissions and additions may be made without departing from the scope and spirit thereof. Reference is made to the drawing to complete the disclosure, but it will be apparent that certain of the details of construction and certain of the relative proportions and shapes of the parts may be varied to suit manufacturing convenience.
I claim:
In a cutting device, a frame which has a horizontal base which has a longitudinal axis, said base having upstanding side walls which also extend forwardly of said base, a lateral support rod mounted between said side walls forwardly of and above said base, a generally rectangular cutting element for mounting upon said support rod for cutting articles fed longitudinally forwardly on said base against said cutting element, means for suspending said cutting element from said rod with said cutting element extending laterally and vertically relative to said base, said suspending means comprising a pair of laterally spaced hooks having shanks extending upwardly from the top of said cutting element, said hooks also extending longitudinally rearwardly and then downwardly and being substantially of inverted J-shape, said cutting element being adapted to be suspended from said rod with the tops of said hooks extending over and in front of said rod and with said hook shanks positioned behind said rod, said cutting element then hanging freely from said rod and extending slidably between said side walls and extending in front of and below said base and being pivotable about the axis of said rod, and stop tabs extending inwardly from the respective side walls and forwardly spaced from the front edge of'said base and located in front of said cutting element and serving as the'forward limits to pivotable movement of said cutting element about the axis of said rod, said cutting element having sufficient freedom of longitudinal movement between the front edge of said base and said stop tabs to permit the upper end of said cutting element to be swung rearwardly and upwardly for withdrawal of said hooks from said rod and for clearance of said cutting element above said base.
