UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
WILLIAM H. BRUNT, ()F' PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO VOIGT,
WARD & (10., OF SAME PLACE.
SCREW-THREAD FOR UNITING ARTICLES F GLASS AND CROCKERY WARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,001, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed October 24, 1882. (Model.) t
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WM. H. BRUNI, ofPittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Threads for Uniting Articles of Glass and Crockery WVare; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the I0 accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of articles of glass- 1 ware, crockery, or other material which are form edin separateparts, to be afterward united; and it has t'orits objects to provide certain improved. means for securing the parts together and forming a secure and perfect joint, as moret'ullyhereinafterspecified. Theseobjects Iaccomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a vertical sectional view of a fruit-jar and cap, showing my invention; 9 and Fig. 2, a sectional view of the cap detached, showing the connecting device.
The letter A indicates ajar of glass or crockery, having the exterior ofits mouth constructed with a spiral or screw groove, B; and D indio catesthecap or cover, which may he constructed of glass, crockery, or other suitable material, with an internal spiral or screw groove, E, corresponding tothe groove in the neck of the jar on the exterior of the mouth, as before 5 mentioned.
The letter F indicates a coiled or con volute wire bent so as to set loosely between the respective grooves or recesses in the jar or cap.
It will be observed that the wire forms a sore w-thread which will hold. theparts together, 40 makingastrong metallic connection, which will hold the parts much more securely than where the intergearing threads are formed directly in the material of thejar or other article.
For the purposes of illustrating my invention, I have shown it as applied to afruit-jar; but it is evident that it may be applied to all articles of glassware-such as bottles, lamps, and their supports-and to other purposes where glass or earthenware articles are made in separate parts, to be subsequently connected together, without departing from the spirit of my invention; also, it will be seen that the screw or spiral groove, instead of being formed 'on the outside of the neck of ajar or other article, may be formed on the inside of the same, and the corresponding groove may be formed on the outside of the stopper or cap. It will be further evident that the grooves, instead of .being semicircular in cross-section, may be angular or polygonal, and the wire of corresponding shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in an article of glassware constructed in two parts and provided with corresponding screw-grooves, of the loosewiie interposed between the parts to interlock the same, substantially as specified. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of 0ctober, 1882.
IVM. H. BRUNT.
