Patented Dec. 8, 1953 COPIES AND THE LIKE ON DUPLICATING MACHINES Mustafa J. Ajam, Amherst, N. H., and Joseph R.
Paradis, Malden, and Carl A. Bergman, Melrose, Mass., assignors to Standard Duplicating Machines Corporation ration of Massachusetts Application October 4, 1950, Serial No. 188,392 4 Claims. (01. 101-248) The present invention relates to mechanism for adjusting the position of the master copy used on fluid duplicating machines with respect to the position of the printing on the clear sheet on which the copy is reproduced.
As fluid duplicating machines are used fo more and more purposes, perfect registration of the printing on the clear sheet has become more and more important; also the ability to adjust the position quickly and with great accuracy;
The importance of this can be illustrated by con- For instance, if a price-list has already been printed with blank spaces for prices opposite particular items, the blank spaces may be filled in by a duplicating machine. Often some price figures are added after others have been put in. Unless each price figure is placed precisely in line with the item to which it applies, a person receiving the price-list may mistake the price of the item, and confusion or even loss may result. Also, it is important that the operator of the duplicating machine shall be able to correct any misalinement instantly and accurately upon examining the first or second copy which is made by the machine. Since such copies are frequently made in a hurry, it is essential that the necessary adjustment should be capable of being made instantly, certainly and without efiort. v
The mechanism embodying the present invention provides simple easily operated mechanism for moving the printing up or down on the clear sheet so that it will fall in precisely the desired position, particularly with relation to other printing which may be on the clear sheet already. This result is achieved by shifting the driven gear on the platen or drum shaft angularly of the drum by means of a thumb wheel located at the end of the drum in position to be under the thumb of the operator when the drum is in the normal stopping position.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a drum or platen of a fluid duplicating machin embodying our in vention, the drum being shown as broken away to show the mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a view of the left-hand end of the parts showninFig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail of the adjusting mechanism separated from the other parts.
Referring now to the drawings, the drum is indicated at II, the shaft at I2, and the driven gear at I3. It will be understood that the gear Everett, Mass, 2. corpo- I3 is movable angularly of the drum II and that such movement changes the angular position of the drum with respect to th position of the feed rolls '(not shown) and consequently varies the position of the clear sheet'with respect to the master copy by advancing or retarding the time when the front edge of the clear sheet arrives at the bite of the pressure roll and the drum, all as has been explained in the patent to Storck Reissue N0. 19,951.
The drum II is provided with an indicating mark 40 adjacent scale II on the frame 42 of the machine. This scale is conveniently calibrated to indicate lines of type as printed by a standard typewriter. The present invention provides mechanism for making this angular adjustment more easily, quickly and accurately.
At I4 is shown a stud having a body I5 and a screw-threaded bore therein. The stud I4 is received in a hole in the spoke I! of gear I3 and can rotate slightly as the adjustment takes place. A screw shaft I9 is received within the screwthreaded bore of the body I5 of the stud I4, and has a bevel gear 20 thereon. The screw shaft l9 passes through the arms 22 and 23 of a yoke 24 which is pivoted on the end of a shaft 21 which extends lengthwise of the drum II and is rotatable in the spokes 26, 26 forming part of the ends of the drum. This shaft 21 has at one end a bevel gear 28 which meshes with the bevel gear 20 and on the other end a thumb wheel 30 whose knurled periphery extends through a hole 3| cut in the end edge of the drum sufficiently to allow the operator to turn the wheel 30 by his thumb. Th end of the screw-shaft I9 extends beyond the gear 20 into a bearing in the arm 23 of the yoke 24.
After the operator has run a sheet or two through the machine and inspected to see whether the printing is properly positioned up or down on the sheet, the thumb wheel 30 may be turned in the proper direction to adjust the printing up or down to the correct position. Moving the thumb wheel 30 turns the shaft 2'! and the bevel gear 28 which in turn rotates the bevel gear 20 and the screw shaft I9. This pulls or pushes the body I5 of the stud I 4 toward or away from the yoke 24. Since the yoke 24 is carried by the drum II and the stud I4 by the driven gear I3, this changes the angular relation of the drum and gear and consequently moves the position of the master copy up or down with relation to the copy sheet. The position of the thumb-wheel on the top of the drum enables the operator to make the adjust- 3 ment easily and quickly, and in the machine shown herein, movement of the indicator mark 40 one space on scale 4| shifts the master copy up or down, asthe case may be one line. Of course, it will be" understood that, the drum may be moved more or less than the amount of one line to improve the alinement of the work on the 5 copy sheet as may be required.
