Thepresent invention relates to new and :usefill improvements in stands for use with rug :hook- ;ing, embroidery hoops, or for other purposes and more particularly to an adjustable and collapsible stand by means of which the work may be supported in a convenient position for a person seated in front of the stand.

An important object of the invention is to provide a novel post construction with means for swivelly and vertically adjusting a rug hooking or embroidery hoop supporting frame and providing a foldable base at the lower end of the post.

Another object is to provide a foldable base including horizontally swingable base arms which are foldable upwardly against the sides of the post and tiltably supporting the post on the base in a desired inclined position.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view;

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 2--2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 44 of Figure 1;

Figures 5 and 6 are enlarged transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 of Figure 4;

Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of the hoop supporting frame; and

Figure 8 is a perspective view of one of the links for the foldable base.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purposes of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a post generally and which is constructed preferably of a pair of Wooden channel members 6 secured to each other with their channels I in opposing relation by means of bolts and wing nuts 8 at the upper ends of the channel members. Reinforcing or wear plates 9 are positioned behind the head 10 and wing nut ll of the bolts.

An adjustable post I2 is slidable in the chanwing nuts *8 to clamp the channel members at the opposite sides of the adjustable post l2.

A substantially U-shaped bracket i3 is secured in inverted position on top of the adjustable post I 2 and a split clamp 14 is welded or otherwise suitably secured on top of the bracket [3 and is formed in its opposite sides with openings [5 to provide a socket for receiving a ball 6 which is clamped in swivelly adjusted position in the clamp H by means of a bolt and wing nut H at the end portions of the split clamp.

A stem l8 rises from the ball l6 and to the upper end of which a work supporting frame designated generally at is is welded or otherwise suitably secured. The frame IB is composed of a plurality of horizontally extending strap metal arms 20 having upstanding tongues 2| at their outer ends formed with openings 22 by means of which a rug hooking hoop 23, embroidery hoop. table top (not shown) or other type of work supporting structure may be secured.

A foldable base structure designated generally at 24 is attached to the lower end of post 5 and comprises a pair of link plates 25 pivotally connected to the opposite sides of the post 5 by a. bolt and Wing nut 26. The link 25 is of substantially T-shaped construction to provide a horizontal stem or shank portion 21 positioned in the bifurcated end portion 28 of an arm 29 which is pivoted to the shank or stem portion 21 for horizontal swinging movement by a bolt and nut 36.

A brace block 3! is formed with a spacing tongue 32 which fits between the channel members 6 at their lower rear portions and is secured thereto by screws 33 to hold the block in overlying position with the bifurcated inner ends 26 of base arms 29 to support the post 5 in a rearwardly tilted position on the arms, as shown in Figure 1.

In the operation of the device, with the base arms 29 swung outwardly in diverging relation to each other on shank 21 of T-plate 25, the post 5 will be supported in an upright position, either vertically by tightening bolt and wing nut 26, or may be tilted rearwardly and supported by block 3| resting on the inner ends 28 of the base arms.

The upper post l2 may then be vertically adjusted in channel members 6 and tilted on ball [6 to adjust the work on frame l9 to a desired position with respect to a person seated behind the stand.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention asv herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A collapsible stand comprising a base and a post pivotally mounted thereon, said base comprising a pair of spaced plates, a pivot member interconnecting said plates, a horizontally disposed arm pivoted to each plate for horizontal swinging movement about said plate, the arms diverging from one another when the base is in supporting position and having their inner ends disposed between said plates when in such position, the lower end of said post being disposed between said plates and pivotally secured to said pivot member, a support block secured to said post above and adjacent said pivot member, said support block having a flat, horizontal lower surface resting upon said arms adjacent their inner ends when the base is in supporting position and limiting pivotal movement of said post in one direction.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said post is disposed between said arms and lies parallel to and in the same plane as said arms when the stand is in collapsed position.
