Patented Aug. 5, 1952 UNITED STATES. PTENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in ladder attachments and more particularly to a foldable platform which may be easily and quickly placed in position on a ladder to support the weight of a person and eliminate the necessity of standing on the rung of the ladder, or for other purposes.
An important object of the invention is to provide a foldable platform attachment of this character having legs supported at their lower ends on one of the rungs of a ladder and provided with adjustable blocks resting on a ladder rung and hingedly connecting a platform to the upper ends of the legs with means for supporting the platform on another rung of the ladder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rung supported by the legs of the attachment which may be used in the same manner as the regular ladder rungs to facilitate climbing onto or off of the platform.
A still further object-is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 2;
and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the foldable platform attachment generally and which comprises a pair of legs 6 having a rung 1 connected to the legs intermediate their upper and lower ends.
The lower end of each leg is forked or bifur-- cated as shown at 8 and formed in its furcations with vertically spaced apart aligned openings 9 for selectively receiving a bolt and wing nut I0. The upper end of the slot ll between the furcations 8 is rounded as shown at l2 and a substantially cylindrical adjusting block 13 is conformly held in the upper end [2 of slot l I by the bolt and wing nut N] which passes through the adjusting block, when the bolt is placed in the uppermost opening 9 of the leg.
The rear edges of the leg 6, above the rung l, are bevelled or tapered as shown at M and to which a hinge structure designated generally at 15 is attached and includes a fixed hinge plate I6 secured to the upper end of the leg by bolts and nuts I! and with one or more bearing eyes H3 at the upper end of the hinge plate for rep. ceiving a hinge pin I is secured to the underside of a platform 2! and is also formed at its front end with one or more 9. A second hinge plate 29 eyes 22 aligned with the eyes l8 and through which the hinge pin I9 also passes to swingably connect platform 2| to the leg 6.
The hinge plate 2!] projects beyond the rear edge of the p1atfo1m'2l and is formed with a rearwardly projecting hook 23.
In the operation of the device the bifurcated lower ends 8 of legs 6 are placed over one of the rungs 24 of a ladder 25.. The platform 2| is then supported on another rung of the ladder by the hooks 23.
The lower edges of the adjusting blocks 13 are notched as shown at 26 to conformably rest on the rungs 24 of the ladder and provide means for adjusting the platform 2! to maintain the latter horizontally according to the inclination of the ladder 25.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A ladder attachment comprising a foldable platform, means at the rear edge of the platform adapted for supporting the same on a ladder rung, legs hingedly connected at their upper ends to the front edge of the platform, said legs having bifurcated lower ends providingslots for receiving a second ladder rung, elongated members positioned transversely and vertically adjustable in the slots, said elongated member including tightening means to hold the furcations of said bifurcated lower ends from spreading and blocks positioned in the slots and having bores through which said members pass, said blocks resting on said second rung.
