N. J. WEBB.
SAW SET. No. 253,794. Patented Peb.14,1882.
v Attorneys n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON J. WEBB, OF DENVER, MICHIGAN.
SAWfSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,794, dated February 14, 1882.
Application filed July 22, 1881. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NELsoN J. WEBB, of Denver, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Setting Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved sawset. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of the under side.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to devices for setting saws; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of a tool or implement which is adapted not only to sctlhe teeth, but also to gage them after they have been set, and to gage the intermediate plow or rake teeth, which are simply sharpened by filing, but do not require setting, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the handle, at the outer end of which is a head, B, made with beveled or inclined sides a a, between which is a slot, b. Parallel to the inner bevel ai. 6., the bevel nearest the handle-is a groove or recess, 0, cut slantingly across the side of the handle, which forms a way for the adjustable gage-plate G, the lowerend of which tapers to a point, C, while its upper end has a slot, 0?, through which is inserted the shank of a thumb-screw, D, which works in a screwthreaded bore made transversely through the handle.
E is a small washer, which bears against the gage-plate O, the washer being wider than slot (1, through which the thumb-screw is inserted.
The top of the handle has a plate, F, which projects to one side thereof, so as to form a flange, f, at right angles to and projecting laterally from the body of the handle, butis broken away at 9 about midway on top of the handle, so as to leave an open space in the flange f.
The teeth are set with the slotted head B, after which they are gaged in the following manner: The sliding plate 0 is adjusted by means of its thumb-screw to project with its point 0 a distance below the handle or body A of the tool equal to the length which the saw-teeth are to have, and is then fastened by tightening the screw. By placing the point C in the throat of the tooth its point should extend up to the top of the slot formed between the head B and plate 0. If it is either too long or too short, this is remedied by filing the point or throat of the tooth, as the case may be. Thelength of the plow or rake teeth is gaged by means of the opening 9 in the flanged gage-plate F f on top of the handle, which also serves to brace and re-enforce the latter.
Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statese The described saw-settin g tool orimplement, consisting of a handle, A, having head B, beveled at a. a and slotted at b, laterally-projectin g top plate, Ff, discontinued to form the opening g, slotted gage-plate O C, sliding in the grooved way or recess 0, parallel to the contiguous bevel a of the head, and thumb-screw D, provided with the washer E, all constructed and combined to operate as shown and specified, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of twowitnesse-s.
NELSON J. WEBB.

JOHN H. STRAIGHT, FREEMAN O. CRANDALL.
