Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER W. ROBINSON, OF SAEGERTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,978, dated May 16, 1882.
' Application filed February 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER W. Ros
'INSON, of Saegertown, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have inventexact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig.2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a side view, of saw-blade detached; Fig. 4, a detail view of the collar and adjusting device; and Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section.
' This inventionihas for its object to provide a simple, efficient, durable, and inexpensive means for readily attaching or removing sawblades from their handles, and also for adj usting the blade at different angles to the handle.
- Referringby letter to the drawings, A denotes the saw handle, havingthe usual recess, B, for the reception of the saw-blade (J.
D designates a U-shaped clamping-collar, the sides or arms E E whereof embrace the sides of the handle, and have their upper or top ends, F F, project somewhat over the latter. The arms of the clamping-collar may be embedded in suitable grooves in the sides of the handle; or, in lieu of this construction, they may be provided with longitudinal ribs or small nibs on their inner sides, which will enter corresponding grooves or recesses in the handle. i
. G is a clamping or adjusting lever pivoted between the ends F F of the clamping-collar.
-This lever is provided at its rear or power end with a suitable screw-threaded opening, H, in which works an adjusting thumb-screw,
I, for rigidly securing the lever in the desired position. The front end, J, of lever]? is hooked or serrated on its under side, and is recessed in its end, as shown at K, so that the end of the lever can engage any one of a series of serrations or notches, L, on the top edge of the saw-blade. The latter is cut away near the lower portion of its rear end or edge to form a curved or semicircular recess, M, which hooks, as it were, over the lower portion of the clamping-collar when in position, and on which the saw-blade may turn as on apivot when it is being adjusted or removed from the handle.
The adjustment of the blade at differcntan gles to the handle is effected by causing the end of the lever to engage different notches of the series on top of the saw-blade.
Having thus described my inventi0n,Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the handle and adjustable blade, of the clamping-collar, having an adjusting-lever adapted to engage the blade and provided with a set screw for bolding it in position, as set forth.
2. The combination, with thchandleprovided with the U-shaped clamping-collar having an adjusting-lever pivoted between the arms thereof, and provided with a hooked or notched end and a set or adjusting screw, of the adjustable saw-blade, having a series of serrations on its upper edge and a curved recess near its lower edge, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER W. ROBINSON.
