Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ROBJOHN, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
INKS'IAND.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,217, dated August 23, 1859.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RoBJoHN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the ink stand'showing the cover when raised by the action of the finger upon the button of the metallic ring. Fig. 2, is a vertical section showing the cover closed and the several parts in the relative position therewith.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The reservoir for the ink can be made of any suitable material; and is indicated in the drawings by letter A. This reservoir is shown of the form, of the frustum of a. cone, as the most convenient form for the application of my improvement. Upon the top of this reservoir is cemented a metallic ring B, having two small pins projecting` from its sides which pass into slots formed in the cap C, in order to secure said cap to the metal ring B. This cap secures the elastic diaphragm to the top of the ink stand. Two stands c, c, are riveted to the cap C, and to these are pivoted the cover D, and ring D. The ring is formed with a projecting lip d, upon which is placed the fingei to effect the raising of both t-he cover and the ink into the fountain at the same time. This is accomplished by a piece E, which forms a part of the ring D, and proceeds therefrom, and is pivoted to the eX- treme end of the stands c, c, and has aslot cut through it, into which plays a bentarm c, said arm being riveted to the cover D, or it may form a part of said cover. The cover D', is pivoted just above this slot and is made to open by a gentle pressure of the vfinger upon the lip CZ, the closing being effected by the elastic diaphragm Gr, through which passes the fountain cup I-I.
The operation of this inkstand may be described as follows: By gently pressing upon the lip el, with the little linger, the pen being held between the thumb and fingers of the same hand, the rear part of the slot in the projecting portion E, of the ring will press upon the bent arm e, of the cover D, and raise said cover sufficiently to admit the pen into the ink fountain which has already been forced down in the act of raising the cover and is supplied with ink. When the finger is now removed from the lip d, the reaction of the diaphragm forces the ring D, up, and relieves the cover D', when it falls and closes the fountain cup by its own gravity, and in this manner the ink is always kept closed, when not in actual use and all liability of the ink becoming thick by evaporation or otherwise eifectually prevented.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The arrangement and combination of the ring D, cover D arm (e) slotted projection E and diaphragm G, so that by pressing` down ring D the cover will open and the ink rise, and by releasing the ring the ink will fall and the cover D will close, as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
THOS. ROBJOHN.
