This invention relates to garments of the girdle of ioimdation type, and particularly to a garment designed to provide a narrow and well defined waist-line.

An object of the present invention is to provide a high waist-line girdle which will give firm but laterally elastic support to the abdomen.

Another object is to provide an improved girdle having separate longitudinal and lateral abdominal supports.

In accordance with the invention, the front of the garment, on the inside, is provided with a" pair of inelastic panels on opposite sides of the center line extending the length of the garment; and superimposed on these panels in the region of the abdomen only are a pair of relatively short elastic straps which are yieldable laterally only of the garment. Each elastic strap has a length which is approximately one-quarter of an inch shorter than the width of the panel on which it iss'uperimposed, measured along a line at right angles to the center line or seam. These short elastic straps draw the abdomen in and give upward support thereto. It is preferred that a plurality of longitudinally extending stays also be provided at the front of the garment, and which terminate at the region of the abdomen. The construction and location or the stays are such that they serve to flatten the abdomen by exerting an inward pressure. It will thus be seen that although the short elastic lateral straps and the longitudinal stays act independently of each other, they both combine to furnish different kinds of support for the abdominal region, as aresult of which the waist-line is moulded gently, producing a Well defined, trim figure.

A more'detailed description of the invention follows in conjunction with a drawing, wherein:

Fig. I is a front view of the girdle turned inside out, embodying the principles of the invention; and

Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 along the lines 2-2.

Referring to the drawing, there is shown a high waist-line girdle, seen from the inside, comprising an inelastic front panel portion having a pair of inelastic longitudinally extending front panel sections In, I on opposite sides of the center line H, joined by seams l2 to inelastic longitudinally extending panels l4, l4. Panels l4, M are" joined by seams I6, I6 to side sections or panels I8, I 8 which are formed of material ar ranged to provide for lateral stretch; viz for elasticity circumferentially of the girdle. The

directions of stretch of the several panels or sections of material are indicated by the arrows. The back panels are preferably made of inelastic material.

2 The front is preferably provided with a slide fastener which may extend from the top o'fthe garmentdownwardly and is accessible from the exterior of the garment. This fastener is covered: on the interior by a relatively narrow strip of" soft material. Other forms of f astener'may beemployed if desired, and where the slideirastener' is employed it may be supplemented b hooks and eyes or other fasteners arr-"anged'to initially engage the edges of the openings to assist in the. application of the garment to the wearer.

Suitable garter attachments 32 may be provided; at the lower edge of the garment.

That edge of each strap 20 which is connected to stitching I2 is positioned half-way betweenthe top and bottom of the garment, while the other end is lower down on the garment.-

The" front of the garment is provided with atriangular' gore at its lower edge to receive a one cumferent'ially elastic crotch section 28 which is connected thereto by double rows of stitching 28' on tapes 30. It should be noted that tapes 30 are stitched to the laterally elastic straps 20 only at an intermediate triangle on these straps repre-' sentedby lines 32'. 20- which are located along the center line H above and below lines 32 are not stitched to the gore 28 or to the front panels l0.

Each laterally elastic strap 20 has a length measu-redat right angles to the center line H, between stitches I2 and 2-2, which is one-quarter of an inch shorter than the width of the panel:

The improved girdle of the invention provides two difierent kinds of support for the abdominal region which cooperate to mould the waist-line firmly, yet comfortably to the wearer, and to furnish a strong degree of support lacking in prior garments of this general type.

What is claimed is:

1. A foundation garment comprising abody encircling member having at its front an inelastic panel portion, a vertical stay extending along the center line from the top to approximately the center of said garment, a stay on either side of said central stay and substantially coextensive with the central stay and terminating above the bottom of the garment and approximately in the region of the lower end of said central stay, a narrow strip of inelastic material separating said central stay from each of said other stays, a V- shaped laterally elastic crotch section also at the front of said garment and having an apex positioned adjacent the lower terminations of said stays and along said center line, and a pair of oppositely disposed and substantially horizontally positioned interiorly located laterally elastic straps in the approximate region of the abdomen of the wearer joined at adjacent edges to the center line of the garment and at opposite edges to the respective side edges of said inelastic panel portion.

2. A foundation garment in accordance with claim 1, characterized in this, that said pair of oppositely disposed laterally elastic straps slant zupwards from the center line to the side edges.

3. A foundation garment comprising a body encircling member having at its front an inelastic 1panel portion, a vertical stay extending along the reenter line from the top to approximately the center of said garment, a stay on either side of said central stay and substantially coextensive with the central stay, said stays on opposite sides (of said central stay slanting inward toward the center line of said garment and terminating above the bottom of the garment and approximately fin the region of the lower end of said central stay, whereby the lower ends of said stays are closer together than the upper ends, a narrow strip of :inelastic material separating said central stay .from each of said other stays, a V-shaped laterally elastic crotch section having an apex positioned adjacent the lower terminations of said stays and along said center line, a substantially horizontally positioned interiorly located laterally elastic portion in the approximate region of the abdomen of the wearer and effective at said center line and covering the lower ends of said stays and joined at its opposite edges to the respective side edges of said inelastic panel portion.

A foundation garment comprising a body encircling member having at its front an inelastic panel portion, a vertical stay extending along the center line from the top to approximately the center of said garment, a stay on either side of said central stay and substantially coextensive with the central stay, said stays on opposite sides of said central stay slanting inward toward the center line of said garment and terminating above the bottom of the garment and approximately in the region of the lower end of said central stay, whereby the lower ends of said stays are closer together than the upper ends, a narrow strip of inelastic material separating said central stay from each of said other stays, a V- shaped laterally elastic crotch section having an apex positioned adjacent the lower terminations of said stays and along said center line, and a pair of substantially horizontally positioned interiorly located elastic straps oppositely disposed relative to said center line and located in the approximate region of the abdomen of the wearer, said pair of straps being joined at adjacent edges to the center line of the garment and at opposite edges to the respective side edges of said inelastic panel.

A foundation garment comprising a body encircling member having at its front an inelastic panel portion, a vertical stay extending along the center line from the top to approximately the center of said garment, a stay on either side of said central stay and substantially coextensive with the central stay, said stays on opposite sides of said central stay terminating above the bottom of the garment and approximately in the region of the lower end of said central stay, a narrow strip of inelastic material separating said central stay from each of said other stays, a V-shaped laterally elastic crotch section having an apex positioned adjacent the lower terminations of said stays and along said center line, a substantially horizontally positioned interiorly located laterally elastic portion in the approximate region of the abdomen of the wearer and eifective at said center line and covering the lower ends of said stays and joined at its opposite edges to the respective side edges of said inelastic panel portion.

A foundation garment comprising a body encircling member having at its front an inelastic panel portion, a vertical stay extending along the center line from the top to approximately the center of said garment, a stay on either side of said central stay and substantially coextensive with the central stay and terminating above the bottom of the garment and approximately in the region of the lower end of said central stay, a narrow strip of inelastic material separating said central stay from each of said other stays, a V-shaped laterally elastic crotch section also at the front of said garment and having an apex positioned adjacent the lower terminations of said stays and along said center line, and a pair of oppositely disposed and substantially horizontally positioned interiorly located laterally elastic straps in the approximate region of the abdomen of the wearer joined at adjacent edges to the center line of the garment and at opposite edges to the respective side edges of said inelastic panel portion, each of said laterally elastic straps having a length in the unstretched condition which is slightly less than the width of that portion of the inelastic front panel upon which it is superimposed.
