This invention relates to a hem binding gage for guiding a tape at a xed distance from a hem, or the like, while the said tape is being sewed adjacent to the hem, and provides an improvement over the hem binding gage disclosed in my co-pending application. for United States Letters Patent filed March 26, 1946, Serial No. 657,118 and now Patent No. 2,487,926, dated November 15, 1949.
An object oi the present invention is to provide such a hem binding gage which is easy to use and which will, within its capacity, permit selective positioning of a binding tape at any desired distance from a predetermined line.
A further object of this invention is to provide certain improvements which will facilitate the use of the gage.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved gage showing the manner in which it is used.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of said gage with the guide plate in a different position.
Fig. 3 is a rear edge view of said gage.
Fig. 4 is a sectional end View on line ll--il of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the position of the gage While in use for applying a binding tape to a piece of material.
As illustrated in the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a piece of material, such as the bottom' portion of a garment or the like, on which has been i'orincd crease ii defining a hem portion 'l running the bottom of the skirt, or other garment, and E denotes a binding tape or ribbon which is being sewed by means of stitches indi-- cated at 9 to said hem.
In forming the hem, the garment is first marke-l .tor length and the crease is then formed along the line dening the bottom edge of the A hem l is then formed by sewing the along the edge thereof and it is important that this tape be guided, during the sewing thereof onto the hem, so that it will be parallel to the line t for the ful-.l distance around the garment.
In order to facilitate and render accurate the position ci said tape, t ie present invention provides a gage, preferably in the form of an elongated gage plate lil having a slot i l therethrough running longitudinally of said plate and a guide notch l in the front edge portion i3.
The said gage includes a guide plate Ul which is slidahly secured to the underside of the gage plate lll by means oiA a front end portion l5 thereof being turned back over the iront edge portion i3 and a rear end portion l which is turned over the rear edge portion Il' of the gage plate and has a projecting upright portion I8.
The said guide plate if?, is provided with a guide slot t9 in the portion I9 and a guide slot 20 which is in alignment with the longitudinal slot I l.
My improved gage is preferably graduated along the front edge I3 thereof to denote inches, so that the desired distance of the tape 8 from the preformed line may be determined thereby.
In the use of my improved gage, the tape 8 is rst inserted through the slot i9 and then passed downwardly through the slots ll and 20. The front end of said tape is then extended forwardly of the gage as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
The guide plate l5 is then moved to the desired distance from the notch l2, which distance may be selected by means of the graduations along the front edge I3. The gage is then held with the fingers in the position illustrated in Fig. 5 and with the notch I2 on the line 6. The leading portion of the tape B is then started under the needle of the sewing machine and sewed to the hem by means of the stitches 9.
As the tape and the portion l is moved forwardly by the sewing machine, during the sewing operation, the guide notch l2 is maintained on the line 6 and the tape il may be tensioned by placing a ringer upon said tape and pressing it against the top of the plate il! while the said plate is held with the hand.
In order to retain the guide plate on the gage plate lil, abutments 2 1 2! may be formed in said gage plate, adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, to engage the sides of the guide plate and prevent it from becoming detached therefrom.
I claim:
l. A tape gage comprising a plate having an elongated slot extending therethrough, and a guide plate slideable on said gage plate and having a slot in alignment with said elongated slot for guiding a tape through said gage.
2. A tape gage comprising an elongated gage plate having a slot extending longitudinally therethrough, and a guide plate slideable on said gage plate and having a slot in alignment with said elongated slot and a separate slot for guiding a tape through said gage.
3. A tape gage comprising a gage plate having an elongated slot along a front edge portion thereof, a guide notch in said edge portion, a guide plate located under said gage plate and slideable thereon, and means including a slot in 3 said guide plate aligned with said elongated slot for guiding a tape through said gage at a selected distance from said notch.
4. A tape gage comprising an elongated plate having a slot running longitudinally therethrough along a front edge portion thereof and a notch in said front edge portion, a guide plate mounted under said gage plate and slideably attached thereto by means of edge portions of said guide plate being bent over the marginal portions of said gage plate, and means including a slot in said guide plate aligned with the elongated slot in the gage plate for guiding a tape through said gage at a desired distance from said notch.

A tape gage comprising a gage plate having an elongated slot running along the front edge portion thereof and a guide notch in said edge portion, a guide plate located under said gage plate and having a front end portion bent over and upon the front edge portion of the gage plate between the elongated slot and the free edge thereof, a rear portion bent over the rear edge portion of the gage plate, an upright portion eX- tending vertically on the gage from the said rear portion of the guide plate, and means comprising a slot through said upright portion and a separate slot in said guide plate aligned with the elongated slot in the gage plate for guiding a tape through said gage at a desired distance from said notch.
6. A tape gage as set forth in claim 5, wherein the gage plate is provided with abutments adjacent the opposite sides thereof to prevent disengagement of the guide plate therefrom.
