PACKAGE-COVERING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,660, dated May 30, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. MARSH, of Oxford, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Travelers Package-Covers; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide an eficient and serviceable packagecovering, especially adapted for the use of travelers in protecting such wraps and bundles as are usually carried in the hand secured by a shawl-strap or similar appliance, and to afford facilities for the convenient and compact disposal of said covering when not required for use.

To this end my invention consists in a covering formed of thin water-proof fabric, combined with a case or receptacle into which said cover can be folded or inclosed, and means for the attachment thereof to an ordinary shawlstrap, the same being an improved article of manufacture, organized and adapted for use substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 represents a view of my improved package-covering as inclosed in its receptacle or case. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at line a: 00, showing the manner of connecting the case and covering with the shawl-strap. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view at line y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4. shows on a smaller scale a plan view of the package-cover extended, and Fig. 5 shows the cover as applied to use.

In describing the construction of my invention the reference-letter A denotes the coverin g fabric, which consists of a sheet of gossamer rubber cloth or other suitable water-proof material, of convenient size and form, or about one square yard (more or less) in dimension.

B indicates a case or receptacle adapted for receiving and containing the sheet A when not in use, said sheet being folded or rolled together in to a small compact shape. The case B may be formed of leather or any other suitable material desired, and its shape and size can be modified to suit the different requirements in style, taste, and purpose of the users. In the present instance the case is made with flexible flaps b b at the sides and ends, which flaps b bfold inward over the fabric A after the latter has been folded into the central space, in the manner illustrated. The flaps b are secured, when closed, by means of the straps G, fastened to the back of the case and extending around the exterior thereof with suitable buckles or fasteners, c.

d indicates buckles, straps, or fastening devices adapted for securing and detaching the case B to and from the shawl-strap bar or handle D, in connection with which the packagecovering is employed.

The case B, with the fabric A folded therein, when detached from the shawl-strap handle D, is of a size convenient to be carried in the pocket or stowed away in any desired manner, or, say, nine inches lon gby threeinchesin width by three-fourths of an inch in thickness, more or less, as preferred. The case B may be connected to the sheet A at its center, or at other convenient location, permanent-1y by means of rivets or by stitching the parts together at a, or temporarily by studs, buttons, eyelet-lacing, or other suitable fastenings, the arrangement thereof being such as will not interfere with the use of the article.

A re-enforce piece, f, is secured to the inner face of the sheet A, where the fasteners or stitches occur, to prevent tearing out the thin fabric.

When used, the sheet A is wrapped about the traveling-package, the case B resting on the exterior surface thereof, and the straps D of the shawl-strap handle are passed around the whole and secured in the usual manner, as illustrated in Fig. 5.

When not required for use, the sheet of fabric Ais folded or rolled up and secured within the case B, which can be left with the shawlstrap handle D, or be detached therefrom and carried in the pocket or stowed away in compact and convenient form.

The covering A and its inclosing-case B can be made and sold independently for use with any ordinary shawl-straps; or the shawl-straps and covering devices may be made andadapt ed to each other and sold together, as preferred.

What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the sheet of waterproof fabric A and inclosing-case 13, provided 5 with straps d, or means for its temporary attachment to a shawl-strap bar or handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the shawl-strap handle D, of the sheet of fabric A and the case [0 B for containing said fabric when folded, sub

stantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the handle-bar D, l

having straps D D, of a case or receptacle, B, and a sheet of fabric, A, adapted for covering hand-packages and capable ofbein g folded and 15 inclosed within said case when not required for use, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
