This invention relates to coal, refuse, and other fuel burning grates of the shaker type and also of the type wherein the bed of the grate is formed of a flat substantially hollow casing with comparatively small air tubes extended therethrough, and in particular this invention relates to a substantially hollow perforated grate having a water filled beam providing a divider extended across the grate and spaced from one end thereof. I
The purpose of this invention is to provide a Water cooled shaker grate wherein means is provided for confining the fire to a comparatively small section thereof whereby only a portion of the grate is available for summer use.
This invention is an improvement over the grateof the prior patents of Cyrenius Losch numbers 1,840,117 and 1,939,177, in that a substantially hollow water cooled beam is provided on the surface of the grate for dividing the grate into sections.
It is diificultto regulate the fire in domestic and commercial coal burning furnaces whereby suflicient heat is obtained for the residence or building during the winter and only suflicient heat for hot water is provided during the summer. For this reason auxiliary hot water heaters are used whereas it would be less expensive to maintain a small fire in the main heating plant. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates means for dividing the grate of a furnace whereby a plurality of different sizes of fires may be maintained on the grate so that the device provides means for maintaining a large fire over the entire area of the grate, a small fire at one end of the grate, or an intermediate fire over the opposite end of the grate.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for dividing water cooled shaker grates to provide a small and a large fire wherein the dividing element may be applied to grates now in out the intermediate portion thereof by tubular elements which provide air passage through the grate, and a box-like channel shaped or tubular beam extended from the front to the rear of the grate, spaced from one end thereof and having openings in the lower side communicating with the area between the plates of the grate.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

I Referring now to the drawings whereinlike reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved water cooled shaker grate of this invention includes a hollow beam II], a grate having an upper plate I I, a lower plate I2, hollow end beams I 3 and I4 and tubular sections extended-through and connecting the plates I I I2 as indicated by the numeral I5.
The dividing beam I0 is channel shaped in cross section having a back I6 with side flanges I! and I8, and a plate I9 is positioned across the outer end providing a closure, therefor. The inner end 20 of the divider is welded to a hollow beam 2I extended across the front of the grate, as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The edges of the back I6 and side flanges I1 and I8 are welded to the face 22 of the hollow beam 2 I. The upper plate I I of the grate is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 23 that provide communicating means between the interior of the dividing beam in and the grate.
The beam It opens into the back header or beam 2| of the grate and the water or other liquid circulates from the interior of the grate through the holes 23 into the divider and through the divider to the back header or hollow beam 2| from where it is circulated to the boiler.
The openings 24 of the tubular elements I5 between the plates I I and I2 of the grate provide air circulation through the body or bed of the grate and, is illustrated in Figure 3 air under pressure or a forced draft may be supplied to the entire grate or to sections thereof through a duct 25 that communicates by means of openings 9 with an air chamber 26 which is positioned against the lower surface of the grate.
In the design shown coal or other fuel is supplied to the grate through a feeder channel 21 which is provided with spaced openings 28, 29, and 30 whereby coal is supplied to the section or sections of the grate desired. The openings are provided with vertically disposed chutes 3I, as shown in Figure 3 and when it is desired to use only the small section of the grate between the divider ID and end beam I4 the openings '28 and 29 are covered by a plate 32 that may be secured in position by a screw 33. At the same time a and cover plate 34 is placed over the body of the grate to cover the air passages 24 therethrough. With the parts arranged in this manner the grate, which is suspended on rockers 35 and 36 is actuated by a motor?! through shaker instrumentalitiesin'a housing 38, anrarm 39 and a bracket 40. The grate is resiliently held by springs 4| and 42 on bolts 43 and 44, respectively; A fan 45 is provided on the, motor shaft for supplying air under pressure'to the 'd'uct'Z-E.
With the parts arranged in, this manner the divided shaker grate may be installed in a'furnace of any suitable type andforordinary'use the entire surface of the grate is used asa. burn.- ing area whereas'during the summer when only a comparatively small. fire is. desired fuel, is. supplied only. to the; section of the. grate. between the divid emu. and end beam of the, grate. By this means the. remainder oi the grate. is water cooled. and therefore, .is.notrdamaged.
With the-fire confined to a comparatively small areaof the; grate only. a. small. amount. of 'fuel is used as compared with the: amount of fuel required to maintaina small, fire over the, entire gratearea.
