Be it known-that I, MARTIN J. ERK, of Elmira, in the county of Ohemung, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in boilers for generating high or low' pressure steam for power or heating purposes and is also' adapted to be used as a generator for hot water circulating .systerns; g
The main object is to produce a simple and highly eflicientboilerof the character which water or otherliquid may be rapidly converted into steam or circulated through the hot water system with a minimum con'sumptionof fuel. In other words I have sought to distribute the water or other liquid through the combustion chamber in comparatively shallow channels in such manner as to expose relatively small quantities of water to relatively large heating areas without in any way complicating the work of assembling the water containing bet I Another object is to utilize the upper por-- chambers or pipes within the combustion chamber. 3

The-boiler shown in Fig. 1 comprises an outer wall or casing -1 of fire brick or other suitable material resting upon a suitable supporting base .2 andrismg some distance therefrom to form an interior combustion chamber -3. Within the base of the combustion chamber is an ash pit 4, the top wall thereof being provided with an opening and arranged at said opening and supported by the top wall of the pit is a grate 5. Mounted upon the top wall of the pit 4: is avertically disposed cylindrical member 6 which in connection-with a porgrate 5 constitutes a fire pot, a portion of the top wall of the pit 4 and the grate forming the bottom of the fire pot. Mounted within and inclosed by the member 6 is a plurality of, in this instance, two, hollow division walls 7- and 8 arranged one within the other some distance apart to form .an intervening fire passage 9.

The outer coil 7. is of substantially the same diameter as that of the interior of the fire pot and preferably consists of a single pipe coiled upon itself in the manner shown and having its lower end connected to a return pipe 10, while its outer end 1s connected toan upflow pipe -11-.- In i like manner the inner coil -8- consists of a single'pipe of somewhat smaller cross sectional diameter than that of the coi1'-7 and having its lower end connected to a return pipe 12 and its outer end connect-' v The lower convolution of the outer coil preferably rests upon suitable bearings 14 surrounding the grate 7- and is additionally supported by its return and upflow pipes -1 0-- and 11 which extend outwardly through openings in the inclosed wall or case- 1 In hk'e manner the coil --8- is supported by its laterally extending return and upflow pipes -12-- and -13 which extend through suitable openings ing 1- preferably at the same sides and in proximity to the corresponding return and upfiow pipes of the outer coil -7-.
outer coil '7- particularly when it is con-- sidered that the pipes of the inner coil -8-- are somewhat smaller than those of the outer coil and in some instances it may be possible to use this inner coil separately brom the outer coil, asfor example, when quired in which case the fuel would of course be placed only within the inner coil and not between the outer coils.-
A horizontal baflie pipe-coil -15- is-supported'within the combustion chamber some distance above the coils -7- and -8- with its convolutions in close juxtaposition and is provided.with a return flow pipe 16-' and an upfiow pipe -17- extending laterallythrough and supported in suitable e enings in the wall or casing 1-- for holding said coil in its operative position and permitting the convolutions to expand and contract freely without liability of overstraining the connections of its ends, the central portion of the coil being left open at 18 for permitting the entrance of fuel from thetop within the coils 7- and -8- and onto the underlying grate 5 x 2 a Directly above the horizontal coil --15 is a crown sheet or cover plate 19 forming the upperwall of the combustion chamber and in this instance provided with a central opening 20.having a movable lid '--21+- which may be opened at will to permit the entrance of fuel through the openings 20 and -.18- within the underlying coils -7- and 8-.
The casing 1 extends some distance above the plate 19 forming a fuel reservoir -22 for'the reception and retention of a limited amount of reserve fuel which may be forced into the opening -20- when the lid 21 is raised.
7 The return pipes for all of the coils are preferably arranged at one side of the eater in close proximity to each other,

The return pipes for the coils --7-, -8-.- and baflle --l5 may be connected to a single return conduit -27- which in turn may be connected by a pipe -28-'to the lower water containing chamber of the head -23 or may be connected by an extension -29- to a hot water radiating system and in order that the boiler may be used for either hot water or steam, the extension '29 is provided with a valve --30-, While the branch return pipe -28-' from the head -23 is provided with a valve -31-.
When it is desired to use the boiler for generating high or low pressure steam for power or heating purposes, the valve -30 maybe closed and the valve -31 opened which allows any water of condensation which may return through the distributing pipes -24 to the head --23- to return through the pipes -28- and -27 to the return pi es of the coils 7-, 8- and -15. n the other hand when it is desired to use the boiler for hot water. circulation, the valve -3lmay be closed and the valve 30 opened, thus permitting the water to return 'from the circulating system through the pipe 27- to the coils after passing upwardly through the upflow pipes, distributing head and distributing pipes through the heatingsystem.

These pipes -37 and -38 extend laterally through suitable stay tubes -39-- connecting the inner and outer shells of the fire box and forming water tight joints therewith, said lateral extensions and stay tubes serving as. supporting means for holding the hollow partitions in operative position within the fire box where they are entirely enveloped by the products of combustion.
