E. U SUOVILLE. STAYEOLLEB FOR SLIDING 11001151.
Patented May 2, 1882.

ELIJAli U. SGOVILLE, OF MANLHJS, NEW YORK.
Sim-Rotten Foe SLiDihiG' noose.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent'lli'o. 257,189, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed January 5], 168:3. (No model To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIJAH U. SCOVILLE, of Manlius, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stay-Roll for Sue pended Sliding Doors, of which the following, tairen :in connection with the accompanying drawings,.is a full, clear, and exact description- The nature of this invention consists essentially of an arm adapted to be secured to the side of the wall beneath the bottom edge of the sliding door and a stud secured to the free end of said arm adjustably in relation to its distance from the attaching end of the arm and provided with a suitable bearing for engaging and guiding the bottom of the door, all as hereinafter more fully explained, and set forth in the claims.
in the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a face view of the some. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side thereof, and Fig. at is a transverse section on line no a: in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
1) represents the lower portion of a suspended sliding door. A is a horizontal metal arm cast with a vertical plate, a, on one end, by means of which plate it is sccured'to the side of the wall beneath the bottom edge of the door 1), said plate a. being provided with holes for the screws 0 c, by which it is attached to the wall, and having projecting from its rear face a spur, c, which enters the side of the wall and serves to support the plate a with its arm A, and to a great extent relieve the attaching-screws c c of the strain. The free end of the arm A is provided with a longitudinal slot, .1, and upon the said arm is mounted a stud, I), through the center of which is a vertical hole through which passes a bolt, J, said bolt also passing through the slots of the arm A, and having on the under side of the latter a not, n, which, in conjunction with the head of the bolt engaging the upper end of the stud, serves to secure said stud in position. Upon the upper end or" the stud b is journaled ahorizontal roller, R, which engages the exterior of the base of the door and is re tnined on the stud by the head of the bolt (1 being extended over the hub of the roller, as best seen in Fig. '4. of the drawings.
it will be observed that the slot 8 allows the roller to no set at a greater or less distance 5 from theattaching end of the arm A, and is thus adjustable to any thickness of door.
1 am aware that various devices have been applied to the top of suspended sliding doors with the view of preventing the lateral vibration of the door; but it is obvious that such arrangements are incapable of producing the desired effect without entailing'undue strain on the parts which support the door. My invention is arranged at the bottom of the door, 6 and not attached to the door, butto the side of the building or wall, thus having a rigid -support and engaging the door at a point What I do claim as .my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The adjustable door-stay consisting of an arm adapted to be secured to the side of the Wall beneath the bottom edge of the sliding door, and a stud secured to the free end of said arm adjustably in relation to its distance from the attaching end oi the arm and provided with a suitable bearing for engaging and guiding the bottom of the door, substantially as set forth.
end with the vertical sustaining-plate a and at the opposite end with the longitudinal slot 8, the stud 1;, mounted on the arm-A, and having its attaching-bolt passing through the slot The horizontal arm A, provided atone s and provided on its end with the nut n, and 5 the roller R,journaled on the upper end of the stud b, all combined as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The improved stay roll for suspended sliding doors, consisting in the combination of mo plate a, provided with the spur c} and at the opposite end the longitudinal slot s, the stud of the arm A by the bolt d passingvertically through said stud and through the slot 8, and provided with the clamping-nut n, and the roller R, journaled on the stud b and sustained thereon by the head b, secured to the top of the bolt d, all constructed and combined substantially in the manner described and shown.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, i 5
this 22d day of December, 1881.
