l. This invention relates to improvements in Water heater.
The principal objects of-Athis invention are: First, to provide a water heater of a pressed steel construction which will be lighter and morel cheaply manufactured than water heaters known heretofore.
Second to provide a water heater with a header which may be assembled separately from the remainder of the heater and installed thereon to form a top for the fire chamber.
Third, to provide a header for a water heater which may be formed from a single set of dies.
Fourth, to provide a Water heater with a header which Will be easily replaceable and which forms the end of the fire chamber.
The drawings, of which there are two sheets, illustrate a preferred form of the invention and one modified form of the invention.
Fig. 1 represents a vertical cross sectional view through a heater embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross-sectional view through a modified form of a heater embodying the invention.
In the drawings, the reference character I indicates a cylindrical body member formed of sheet steel which defines the re chamber 2 and ash pit 3 of the heater. to the inside of the body memberseparates the fire chamber from the ash pit and supports a lining 5 of suitable refractory material. Grates 6 are provided between the fire chamber and ash pit. A suitable charging door 'I and ash door 8 are also provided on the body member I.
On top of the fire chamber is a closed water header generally indicated at 9, which consists of an inner plate I and outer plate II. The plates I0 and I I are upwardly convex and of like curvature so as to be substantially parallel. The inner plate I0 is provided with a short cylindrical flange I2 which is of the same diameter as the diameter of the body cylinder I while the outer plate II is provided With a longer cylindrical flange I3 which is of sufficiently larger diameter to nt around the nange on the inner plate and the top of the body member. The flanges I 2 and I3 are secured together at I4 as by a continuous Welding process and the lower edge of the flange I3 is secured to the body member I as by welding at I5.
Both the inner and outer plates Ill and II are apertured to receive the smoke pipe I6 which is also formed of heavy sheet metal to withstand the pressure of water in the header 3. The smoke pipe is secured to the inner header IIJ at I'I by a 3 claims. (ol. 122-155) continuous Weld therearound and to the outer plate II at I8 by a second continuous weld. The header is thus completely sealed against leaks bythe welds I4, I'I, and I8. A short section of pipe I9 is inserted through a hole in the top of the outer plate II and secured thereto by a continuous weld 2U. The pipe I3 is provided with a threaded end and serves as an outlet connection from the heater. A similar pipe 2| entersthe header through the cylindrical nange I3 of the outer plate as indicated by the dotted lines. The pipe 2I serves as an inlet connection to the heater.
In the modified form of a heater illustrated in Fig. 2, the body member, re chamber, and ash An annular plate 4 secured pit remain the same, but the inner plate 22 and outer plate 23 of the header are'provided with cylindrical flanges 24 and 25 respectively which are of equal diameter and slightly larger than the diameter of the body of the heater.
The inner plate is slightly extruded or pressed upwardly as at 26 around the opening for the smoke pipe and the smoke pipe 27 is secured thereto by a butt welding operation at 28. After the smoke pipe has been attached to the inner plate, the outer plate 23 may be slipped over the smoke pipe and the lower edges of the flange 25 welded to the top of the inner plate by a continuous weld 29. A second continuous weld 30 seals the upper plate around the smoke pipe 21. The header may then be slipped over the end of the body of the heater and secured in place by Welding.
The outlet connection 3| and an inlet connection 32 are formed by welding annular Washers around the apertures in the outer plate and internally threading the surface formed thereby.
It will be noted that the header shown in the modified form of the invention may be made from two plates formed from the same dies, since the domed portion of each plate is of equal size and shape and the holes for the smoke pipe are in corresponding positions.
In each modication the weld between' the header and the body member may be of a spaced tack weld nature just to hold the header in placeso that the welds may be chipped off to remove and replace the header if necessary.
The invention has been illustrated and described in practical commercial embodiments thereof. No attempt has been made to show further adaptations, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody the invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A header for a water heater having a cylindrical body member having a plane circular upper end comprising, a continuous inner dome .shaped plate having an integral cylindrical flange therearound of equal diameter to the diameter of the body member and adapted to abut the end of said body member, a continuous outer `domeshaped plate having an integral cylindrical ange therearound arranged telescopically around said rst flange and projecting therebelow to embrace the top of said body member, said flanges being welded together with the dome-shaped portions of said plates in spaced relationship, and a smoke pipe extending through both of said plates and secured thereto by continuous welds extending around same smoke pipe, said pipe being positioned eccentrically of said plates and near the edges thereof.
2. ,A lheader lfor a water heater having a cylindrical sheet metal body with a ilat open upper end comprising, a pair of dome-shaped plates having integral cylindrical flanges around the edges thereof, the flange on one of said plates being :Welded tothe edge of the dome-shaped section Aof the other of said plates, a smoke pipe extending between said plates, and secured there- `to '.by .continuous welds around said smoke pipe, said pipe being positioned eccentrically of lsaid plates Aand near the edges thereof, said flanges having an inner diameter approximately equal to the outer diameter of said body member whereby the lower flange will fit telescopically over saidbody.
I3. A water heater comprising, an outer ycylindrical sheet metal body member having a plane circular open upper end and enclosing a lire chamber and ash pit, an annular ring of sheet metal welded in said body between said chamber and pit and adapted to support refractory material in said chamber, a header closing said upper end and having spaced dome shaped plates formed of continuous sheet metal and having integral cylindrical flanges extending completely therearound, the flange on one of said plates being welded to the other of said plates completely therearound, and a smoke pipe extending through said plates and welded thereto, said pipe being positioned eccentrically of said plates and near the edges thereof, one of said anges .being telescopically tted over the end of said body member.
