Description

June 26, 1951 s. BERT 2,558,335
ICE scRAPER Filed March 22. 1948 HUG/wey Patented June 26, 1951 UNITED l fSTATlljS-` PATENT 4OFFICE E SCRAPER Samuel Bert, Dallas, Tex.
Application March 22, 194s, serial No. 16,220
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in ice scrapersor shavers, and particularly to devices of this kind embodying means 4for holding a receptacle, such as a cone, in position to receive the shaved ice.`
One 4object of the inventionis to provide a device of this character having novel and improved A means for mounting thescraper bladeand supporting and guiding the device in contact with the ice to facilitate the shaving action and to device the strain on the blade in such action.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of blade and means for mounting the same whereby the blade is rmly supported and disposed in such manner as to protect it to a material degree against liability of injury by contact with extraneous objects.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means to prevent slipping of the device from the hands of the operator.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear in the course of the subjoined description, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the scraper;
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a Vertical longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through the device taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1 and showing a cone supported thereby in receiving position; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the scraper blade.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a scraper body I of generally cylindrical form and comprising a bottom section 2 and a top section 3. These sections are provided at the front with hinge lugs 4 and 5, connected by a pintle pin 6, whereby' the sections are adapted to be opened and closed. At the rear the sections are provided with operating handles 'l and 8. One of these handles, preferably the handle 1 connected with the bottom section, is provided with a stop lug or projection 9 to prevent the hand of the operator from slipping off the handles and casually dropping the device.
The section 2 is formed to provide a scraped ice receiving chamber I0 open at top and partly closed at its bottom by a wall having sloping portions II and I2 converging toward its center. In the wall portion I2, adjacent the point of convergence of wall portions II and I2. a transverse 2 slot I3 is formed through which the scraped or shaved ice is admitted `to the chamber I0.
Formed on the interior of the front `wall portion II of the bottom wall is a blade supporting a delinite distance from the seat face I5.
A cutter blade I1, having a front longitudinal cutting edge I8, is arranged to bear upon the seat face I5 and is removably held in place by the securing screws. As shown, the blade is provided with slots I9 opening through its rear or butt edge whereby it'may be engaged with and disengaged from the screws when the latter are loosened and firmly fastened in position by tight.. ening the screws. This construction provides a means whereby a dull or damaged blade may be removed for sharpening or replacement by a new blade, so that a sturdy blade adapted for long use may be employed and sharpened at intervals required.
It will be observed that the blade is so arranged in an inclined position that the major portion of the blade is enclosed within the chamber I0, and that only its cutting edge projects through and beyond the slot I3 for a cutting action, whereby when mounted in position for use the blade will be protected to a material degree from liability of injury if the scraper should be accidentally dropped or brought into contact with extraneous objects. The angle of inclination of the blade is also such that it is adapted to scrape the ice with facility and to be rmly backed byl its support against the cutting strain.
In the operation of the device inclined wall portion I2 and the ridge between the wall portions II and I2 adapt the device to be slidably moved at different cutting angles to regulate the depth of cut, while the surface Il permits of a `sliding movement of the device away from the operator, if desired. so that the device may be reciprocated back and forth over the ice being scraped to relieve the hand of the operator of the weight of the device in both directions of movement. The depth of cut may also be varied by adjustment of the blade I'l. The inclination of the surface I2 also prevents damming of the shaved ice and insures its free feed to and through the slot I3 to the chamber I0. Hence the device may be used for a large number of repeated operations with less fatigue or stoppage 3 due to the necessity of freeing the slot from clogged ice. The blade slots I9 are made of such length as to allow adjustment of the blade to compensate for wear and to permit of the secur` ing of the blade in fully retracted position to prevent injury thereto in storage or shipment.
The section 3 is provided with an opening 20, which may be of flaring form or other suitable form to hold in place a cone 2| or other receptacle to be lled `with the shaved ice passing thereto from the chamber l0.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the construction, mode of use and advantages of my improved ice shaver or scraper will be readily understood Vwithout a further and extended description. While Athis construction is preferred it is to .be understood that changes in the form, proportion andarrangement'of the parts may be made, within the scope fof the appended claim, without departing nomine spiritrror ,sacricing any of the 'advantages of :the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
.AnEice scraping and cone holding .devicecomprising upper and lower .hingedly connected .cone
balding and yice :receiving members .each .of substantially circular .cross section, the .upper `member l:cofxrlpriising a :complete .ring converging upe wardy .and inwardly and adapted `to support a v:come'shaped receptacle for scraped ice, and the lowerrnexnber 'being cup-shaped `and having an ,integral one-piece bottom portion provided with a pair of rigid converging flat lower surfaces gently inclined upwardly and outwardly from their line of juncture, an elongated rectangular slot formed in one only of the surfaces and extending thereinto from said line of juncture, a boss formed within the bottom portion and having a at blade supporting' surface inclined generally upwardly and rearwardly from the slot, a blade housed principally within the cup-shaped lmember .and adjustably mounted on said boss, vsaid blade having its cutting edge extending only slightly through the slot, and a pair of unitary handles rigidly connected to said upper and lower members respectively and serving as operating means to draw the blade across a cake of ice while the device is supported and guided in contact with the ice by said rigid flat converging lower surfaces of the ice receiving member.
