WILLIAM S. VAN SAINT, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
ICE SCRAPER.
Application filed June. as,
To all whom it may concern: 1-
.Be it known that I, l/VILL AM S. VAN SANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in, the'county' of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements inIce Scrapers, of
. which the following isa specification.
'This invention relates :toa scraper and especially toa scraping or shaving device whereby ice may bequickly and readily reduced to a snow-like consistency.
One of the objects of the present invention is'to generally improve andsimplify devices of the character described, and especially to provide a simple, substantial and easily, operated; device whereby ice may be readily reduced by scraping orshaving action to a snow-like consistency, and simultaneously transferred to a container provided for its reception. i Another object, of the invention is i to provide'means whereby a container or mould for the reception of theshaved ice may be readily attached or removed with relation to the scraper; further to provide means for freeing the scraper if clogged, and for insuringtransfer of the snow-to the. receptacle. Other objects will hereinafter appear. The. invention consists of'the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinaftermore fullydescribed and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which' -Fig. 1 is a. central, vertical, longitudinal section through the scraper. Fig. 2is a bottom view of the same. a Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the holder in which the receptacle is placed. v V 7 Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a cylindrical shaped container on opposite sides of which are formedbearing lugs such as'indicated at 2 and 3. Pivotally attached to the lug ,3, as at 4, is a handle 5, and forming a part of the handle-or an eX- tension thereof, is a movable bottom section or ejector 6, on which is formed a lug7. The ejector is semi-circular in shape as shown in Fig. 2 and forms a partialclosure or bottom section for the cylindrical container A; the opposite'side, of the container being closed by a permanent bottom section 8; the bottom sections 6 and 8 being, sepa- 1922. Serial No. 571,430.
rated to form a transverse slot 9, through which the reduced or shaved ice may be admitted.
For the purpose of permitting ice or like material to be readily reduced to a snowlike consistency, a scraping blade 10 has been provided. The forward edge of this blade is sharp and serrated as at 11, thus forming an ideal cutting edge for scraping or, shaving the ice. The forward edge of the blade extends over the transverse slot 9, and-it is disposed at such an angle that it will direct the ice shavings upwardly through the slot into a chamber 12 formed within the container. The blade may be secured to the permanent bottom section 8 by rivets or the like, or soldered as here shown.
i The present device is intended for the purpose of reducing ice by scraping or shaving action to a snow-like consistency, and simultaneously transferring the disintegrated material :intoa receptacle such as a cornucopia or the like, and it is then flavored by pouring syrup or other flavoring material over the contentsvVith'this object in view it should be obvious that direct transfer of the disintegrated material to the receptacle is preferable as it not only reduces time, but permits sanitary handling of the ice. To accomplish this, a holder 14: has been provided. This holder is cylindrical and coneshaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and it is pivotally attached to the container A by means-of a pair of bearing lugs 15. One sidfeof the holder is open as at 16 and the holder is otherwise provided with a handle 17 which aligns with the handle 5. The peferred form of receptacle for the disintegrated ice is a cone-shaped cornucopia, or a paper container such as indicated at 18. These are inserted when the holder and the container are separated and are retained. during the" scraping operation when the parts are swung together as the container A is slightlyless in diameter than the enlarged end of the holder 14, thus forming a shoulder 19 which secures the receptacle against endwis'e movement when in position. kin actualoperation with a cone shaped receiver or a cornucopia placed within the holder, it is only necessary to grasp the handle sections 5 and 17 and to pull the scraper over the smooth surface of an ice block. The disintegrated materal or shavings thus produced are directed through the slot 9' into the chamber 12 and are from time to time forced upwardly into the container 18 by depressing the movable bottom section 6; this being accomplished by presson the lug 7 either by means of a finger or by rocking the scraper so that the lug. en'- gages with the surface of the ice. Such engagement of the lug causes the bottom sec tion 6 to move inwardly, thus forcing the disintegrated material upwardly into the cone, and at the same time freeing the scraper edge if it should be clogged. The operation is continued until the cone or container 18 has been filled, and it is then only necessary to separate the sections A and 141 and then to remove the container 18, this being accomplished by grasping the container at its lower reduced end and lifting it upwardly through the holder 14: until the reduced end can be passed out or through the opening or slot 16 formed in one side thereof. A flavoring extract, syrup or the like may then be poured over the snow and the contents is ready for consumption. A new cone may now be inserted and the operation repeated.
For the purpose of limiting the outward movement of the movable bottom section or ejector 6, a pair of lugs 20 has been provided. These lugs are formed on the rim or sides of the container'A and are only projected sufiiciently far to engage the bottom section 6, thus securing it1in= proper position during the scraping operation and otherwise limiting its outward movement.
T he combined scraper and holder here shown is exceedingly simple and substantial, and may be handled by practically any one as comparatively little knowledge or practice is required-in the operation of the same.- A large scraping edge is formed by the serrated blade 11 and the operation of filling the cone or receptacle is therefore comparatively quick. A fresh product-is always insured by the buyer as snow cones of this kind melt readily and cannot be kept except in cold storage. The operation of producing the: snow cone, is however soeasily and quickly accomplished, that the operator does not have to make a supply of the same for sale, but fills each cone when required. The device as a whole is otherwise exceedingly sanitary as no part of the contents of the cone is at any time handled by the operator.
"While certain features of the present invention are more or less specifically illustrated, I wish it understood that various changes in form and proportion may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, similarly that the materials and finish of the several parts employed maybe such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate or varying uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combination scraper and holder comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections, a scraper on one section, a handle pivotally attached to said section, an ejector carried by the handle and movable with relation to the scraper, and means for securing a receptacle in the other section.
2. A combination scraper'and holder com prising a container, a stationary half bottom sect-ion formed therein, a scraper securedto said bottom section, an ejector hingedly secured to the container forming a movable bottom section for the other half of the container, said bottom sections being separated to form a slot in front of the scraper, and means for securing a removable receptacle with relation to the container.
3. A combination scraper and holder comprising a container, a stationary half bottom section formed therein, a scraper secured to said bottom section, an ejector hingedly secured to the container forming a movable bottom section for the other half of the con tain'er, said bottom sections being separated to form a slot in front of the scra er, a holder for the reception of a remova 1e re ceptacle, and a hinge connection between the holder and the container.
4. A combination scraper and holder comprising acontainer, a stationary half bottom section formed therein, a scraper se cured to said bottom section, an ejector hingedly secured to'th'e container forming a movable bottom section for the other half of the. container, said bottom sections being separated to form" a'slot in front of the scraper, a holder for the reception of a removable receptacle, a hinge connection between the holder and the container, and a pair of aligned handles formed one on the container and oneon the ejector, said handles adapted to secure or separate the container and holder with relation to each other, and also adapted to permit independent movement of the ejector.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination withthe container and a scraper carried thereby, of a holderhingedly secured to the container, said holder being ring shaped and having a slot formedin one side to permit removal of an insertable receptacle, and means for securing the holder with relation to the container.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a container and a scraper carried thereby, of a holder hingedly secured tothe container, said holder being ring shaped and having a slot formed in one side to" permit removal of an insertable r'eceptacle, a bottom section hingedly secured 10 to the container, a handle thereon, an aligning handle formed on the holder, stop lugs on the container limiting the movement of the bottom section, and a lug formed on the movable bottom section to permit depression 15 thereof.
