UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. WHEELER AND THOMAS I WHEELER, OF CAPE GIRARDEAU, AND JOHN B. WHEELER AND CHARLES M. SLACK, OF JACKSON, MO.
SAM PLE-DISPLAYING LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 255,063, dated March 14, 1882. Application filed November 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WlLLIAM II. \VIIEEL- ER and THOMAS TE. WHEELER, of Cape Girardeau, in the county of Cape Gi'rardeau and State of Missourt, and JOH B. \VHEELER and CHARLES M. SLACK, of Jackson, in the county of Cape Girardeau and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Sample-Displaying Lid, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved sample-displaying lid for attachment to packages or cases containing merchandise.
The invention consists of a frame provided with a front glass and a wooden sliding back, between which the samples to be displayed are placed, which frame is hinged to the front end of the case or package by means of ahook and a nut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a packing-case provided with ourimproved sample-displaying lid. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal sectional elevationof the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The frame A is provided with a glass slide, B, near its upper or outer surface, and with a wooden or metal slide, 0, near its lower or in- Her surface, these slides sliding in suitable grooves in the end pieces of the frame. This frame A is hinged to a strip, D, by means of a hinge, E, provided with a spring, F, for pressing theframe A against the end or front of the case or package. A short rod, G, pro vided with a hook, II, at one end, and having the other end, J, threaded, is passed diagonally through the strip D. This strip D is placed on that end of the packing-case K pro vided with an opening, L, and a lid, M, and the rod G is passed into the opening in such a manner that the hook H catches on the edge of the opening, this edge, or the edge of the cover or lid M, being provided with a suitable notch or recess for the rod G.
The strip D is preferably provided with pointed pins or detents d, for entering the wood of the case or package to hold the said strip D in place, and by means of a winged or other nut, N,-on the screw-threaded end J of the rod G,the strip D ispressed and held firmly on the end of the packing-case K.
The samples-for instance, cakes O-are placed on the lower slide, 0, and the glass slide B is then passed into the frame A. The samples will thus be held between the slides B and O, and are visible through the glass slide 13.
The strip D can be secured on the case K by means of one or more hooks, if desired.
If any of the contents of the case K is to be removed, the frame A is raised or swung outward and the lid M is opened. As soon as the frame A is released it will be closed auto- 6 matically by the spring F. This frame Acan be used to display cakes, grain, spices, or any other kind of articles. The frame A is preferably provided with a ring or loop, D", for raising it. When the case K is empty the frame A is removed and placed on another case, and the samples in the lid are changed accordingly.
If desired, the glass slide B may be replaced by a fixed glass top for the frame A; or the glass may be madeto slide, and the bottom O maybe made rigid without materially changing our improved sample-displaying lid.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp In combination with a packing-case, K, a sample-displaying lid consisting of the frame A, having the upper glass slide, B, and the lower slide, 0, the said frame being hinged to a detachable strip, D, as shown and described.
