Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Display-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to display-boxes, the object in View being to provide a box or receptacle employing a lid or cover which may be thrown open and held at such an angle as to enable it to be utilized as a handle for holding the box in a horizontal position, thus en abling the contents or goods in the box to be displayed to advantage, at the same time enabling the label on the inner or under side of the lid or cover to be, displayed.

The invention resides in the particular manner of hingingor connecting the lid or cover to the box and partly in the formation or construction of the lid itselfywhereby the advantages hereinabove noted are attained.

The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the ensuing description.

The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and relative arrangement of parts, as hereinafter f ully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the box, showing the lid closed. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the lid open. Fig. 4 isa fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of the 'lid with the hinge or connecting-strip applied thereto. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section showing the relation of and connection between the box and lid.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The box in connection with which the present improvements are used may be of any ordinary or preferred form or size and constructed of any materialvdesired. The box illustrated in the drawings is of the type known as an ordinary cigar-box, compris-- ing a bottom l, front and rear sides 2 and 3, respectively, and ends 4, which project above the top edges of the front and rear sides a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the lid or cover, (indicated at 5.)

In carrying out the present invention the rear edge of the lid or cover 5 is chamfered, asindicated at 6. The chamfering (indicated at 6) extends throughout the entire length of the hinged edge of the lid, and the pitch of the bevel is so regulated as to give the desired inclination to the lid when open, as shown in Fig. 3.

The hinge or .connection itself consists of a strip of flexible material 7, such as leather or textile material, preferably the latter for the sake of cheapness. The strip 7 may be continuous or made in several sections and'extends approximately throughout the entire length of the side of the box to which the lid is hinged. The strip 7 is cemented or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the rear side of the box near the top edge thereof, and along its opposite longitudinal edge it is correspondingly secured to the adjacent edge of the lid or cover 5. In order toenable the lid 5 to rest upon the top edges of the front and rear sides of the box, a little looseness or slack is left in the strip 7, which enables the hinged edge of the lid 'to be slid backward over the top edge of the rear side, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, when the lid is closed. In other words, the strip 7 is not cemented fast to the box and lid at the extreme edges of said parts, but is left loose a sufficient distance from such edges to enable the edge of the cover to be slid outward, so as to come flush or practically so with the outer surface of the rear side of the box.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the cover or lid of the box is thrown open it is carried backward until the chamfered edge 6 of the lid bears throughout its entire length upon and against the top Vedge of the rear side of the box, said edge being square or horizontal and not chamfered. This, in connection with the strip 7, serves as a stop for limiting the further opening of the lid, and the connection 7 is strong enough, in connection with the chamfered edge 6 of the lid, to enable the lid or coverto be grasped IOO by the hand of the-salesman and utilized as a handle for holding the box and displaying the contents thereof to a customer, at the saine time enabling the label on the inner side of the cover to be displayed to advantage.

While the improvementhereinabove described is especially designed for use in conmoving and lifting the box the .latter can be Y taken out of a show-case or other receptacle without disturbing other boxes orarticles adjacent thereto.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a box, one side of which has a square or horizontal top edge, of a lid connected at or near one edge thereto and having that edge where the connection occurs chamfered or beveled on the outer side, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination with a box, one side of which has a square or horizontal upper edge, of a lid having an exteriorly-chamfered edge, and a flexible strip connect-ing the ChamferedV edge ot the lid with said side of' the box, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a box,of a lid having an edge chamfered on the outer side, and

a flexible strip secured to the inner surfaces of the box and lid and unattaclled to the chamfered edge of the lid, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a box, one side of which has a square or horizontal upper edge, of a lid hinged thereto and having its hinged edge ehamfered on the outside and arranged to cooperate with the square edge of said side, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.

5. The combination with a box, of'a lid having one edge chamfered, and a flexible strip secured to and connecting the chamtered edge of the lid and the box, sufficient slack or looseness being left in said strip to allow the lid to rest at its chamfered edge upon the edge of the adjacent side of the box, substantially as described.

6, The combination with a box, of a lid having a chamfered edge, and a flexiblejstrip secured to the lid and box near their meeting edges, the strip being left unattached to said parts immediately adjacent to their meeting edges, whereby aY relative sliding movement is permitted in the operation of closing the lidand saidmeeting edges adapted to coperate for sustaining the lid at an angle to the side of the box, substantially as described.
