UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES COLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SMOKING-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,114, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed August 4, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAMES COLE, ofSt. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe having the improvement; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the pipe; Fig. 3, an elevation of the bowl of the pipe, the view being taken at right angles to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a hori- /.ontal section taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a detail, being a bottom view of the bowl-screw; and Fig. (i, a sectional view, showing the lower end of the bowl and bowl-screw, (these parts being turned horizontally,) and the mouth-piece of the pipe beinginserted "in the outer end of the screw.
The present invention is an improvement in pipes having movable bottoms; and it consists in the combinations specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a smoking-pipe, which, saving the present improvement, may be of the usual construction, B being the bowl, 0 the cap, D the stem,ia nd E the mouth-piece. z
F represents the bottom of the bowl. 'It is vertically adjustable in the bowl, and'soithat it can be moved from the lower or inner end, I), of the bowl upward or outward to the end I). The bottom F is held upon and moved in the bowl by means preferably of the screw G, the upper end, g, of which engages preferably loosely in the bottom F. The screw works in a bearing, preferably in the form of a plug, H, that is attached to the bowl B. By turning the screw the bottom Fis worked upward and downward in the bowl, as indicated by the full and broken lines in Fig. 2, the operation being as follows: The bottom being lowered or moved toward the end I) of the bowl, the latter is filled with the tobacco. Then from time to time, as the tobacco is consumed, the bottom F is elevated in the bowl, keeping thereby the stratum of thetobacco which (No model.)
is burning always at the top or outer end of the bowl, and so on until the last remnant of the tobacco is consumed.
Provision is made for drawing the smoke past the bottom, and into the stem when the bottom is above the stem, by perforating the bottom, or, as shown, by making the bottom in diameter smaller than the bowl, and thus providing an annular channel, through which the smoke passes.
A further feature of the improvement is the means for drawing the smoke through the screw G and making that part thestem for .the time being. To this end the screw is perforated longitudinally at g, and the mouthpiece E is withdrawn from the stem D and inserted in the screw, as shown in Fig. 6. When ,this is done the stem D may be detached from the bowl B, and a gate or valve in the form of a slide, I, and working in suitable guides, i,' is moved to close the opening in the side of the bowl where the stem D is inserted. This prevents the air from entering the bowl at that point. When tliesmoke, on the other hand, is being drawn through the stem 1) the perforation g in the screw G is closed by a slide, 9 It is not essential, however, to close the screw G, as by means of the perforation therein the outer air can be supplied to the burning tobacco, and the latter thereby more easily kept alive. The outer end of the screw Gr, when the latter is perforated longitudinally, may be finished in the form of a mouth-piece.
I claim- 1. The combination of the bowl B, bottom F, screw Gr, perforated at g and working in the plug H, carrying mouth-piece E, and gate 1, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bowl B, bottom F, plug H, perforated screw Gr, gate I, gate 9', and stem D, and mouth-piece E, substantially as described.
. JAMES COLE.
