Among the objects of this invention is toprovide a knife-sharpener of the type employing hardened metal discs whichhas a minimum number of parts andmaaimuinsnn ucit and which she lz o vcnient manu c b ma duction methods such as those including metal stamping and sheet metal bendin steps or oper ations.
Thisyinvention has as further objects the provisioniofwa knife-sharpener of this type which can; be made available at.,a..low cost to the consumer because itcanbe manufactured economically, and whichv is convenientandeificient in use.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there are shown in the-accompanying drawings f6ri1s-theredfwhich are at .present preferred, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and organizations of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

That embodiment of my novel knife-sharpener, selected from among others for illustration in the drawing and description in the specification, comprises a support generally indicated at III. The support I!) may conveniently be made of a single sheet or blank of metal. The support It! is provided with a base or stand II having perforaations I2 passing therethrough for the reception of screws I I2 or other fastening means which serve to secure the knife-sharpener in position on a table-top or like convenient location. At one edge, base II has a fold or bend indicated at I3 from which rises a body I4. In fold I3 are one or more indentations I5 which form stifiening ribs IS in the opposite or inner face of the fold l3. At its upper portion, body I4 is divided by a notch I? so that the upper partof the body is formed into two'parts I 8- conveniently termed heads. Eachflhead I8- has a boss or projection 59 formed thereon as by being stamped or pressed therefrom. 'Iheinterengagingpart of'heads I3 and of bosses 19 may. have one or more stiffening ribs-2d thereon. As is best seen in Figure 4, each head; It has an ear 2-I projecting from the side thereof. Discs 22 of metal, suchas hardened steel having precision-ground edges -or rims, are mounted on bosses I9 by means of perforations 23 passing. throughthe discs; 22. The discs 22 are secured in position on the bosses I9 by means of the ears 2I which are conveniently bent over against the 'faces of the discs 22 after the discs 22 have been placed upon the bosses 19. This operation is disclosed. while it is in process in Figure 4.- E achdisc'22 fits-snugly'on a boss i9 and is not vertically -tiltable orcantable about the axisof the boss. Each of the ears 2I is bent around the rim or edge of one ofthe-discs-22 and abuts against a part of the rim or edge of the disc on the opposite side of the pivot or center of the disc to that part 24 of the edge or rim of the disc which forms the sharpening location or point of contact with the knife blade being sharpened. Therefore any stress or pressure which the knife or blade being sharpened puts upon the discs is taken or resisted by the ears 2 I'as well as by the bosses I9. The discs 22 are located with their rims or edges substantially in contact as is indicated at 24 and are aligned so that the major dimension of each of the discs 22 is located in the same plane or surface. In other words, the discs 22 are in edge-to-edge contact and do not overlap.
The method of manufacturing this improved knife-sharpener is as follows. The support ID as a whole, is cut out of sheet stock as by blanking or stamping. The bosses I9 and the reinforcing ribs 29 therefor may be formed by this same operation. The base II can then be made by bending the blank about the fold l3, the stifiening ribs I6 being formed simultaneously. The support I0 may then be placed with the body I4 horizontal and the bosses I9 uppermost, the discs 22 placed upon the bosses I9, and the ears 2| bent over against the upper faces of the discs 22. Since the discs 22 make a straight-line contact as at 24 and are stressed toward each other and also fit snugly upon the bosses I9, they tend to resist displacement during the sharpening operation so that there is no excessive unfolding stress upon the ears 2| such as would otherwise reother specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiments be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of. the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A knife-sharpener including a one-piece support of sheet-metal comprisinga flat elongated base, a disc-supporting portion formed at an acute angle with said base and separated therefrom'by a fold-line extending substantially more than half the length of said base, said portion being centrally-notched to provide a pair of .side-by-side co-planar disc-supporting members, a disc-supporting boss formed integrally on each of said members, and a disc-retaining ear formed integrally on the outer edge of each of said mem- '.bers; and including a pair of centrally-apertured sharpening discs rotatably mounted on said 'bosses in co-planar relationship, said discs having cylindrical sharpening edges disposed in abutting relationship at the notch of said disc-supporting :portion, said ears being folded around said discs :generally in diametrically-opposedrelationship to the point of abutment and serving to retain said discs upon said bosses in vertically immovable and uncantable position.
