Description
Patented Dec. 15, `1925.
GEORGE JONES, OF PHILADELPHIA, YPENN'SYLVANIA.
` KNIFE SHARPENER.
Application iled April 4, 1925. Serial No. 20,785.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to a Sharpener particularly designed for use in ysharpening carving knives, paring knives, scissors, or the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener of the rotary disc type which is simple in construction, and may be manufacti'ired at a relatively low cost in proportion to the cost of approved types of rotary disc knife sharpeners now on the market.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener as specified, in vwhich a holder or support is provided being constructed from a single piece of sheet metal and having trunnions struck therefrom on which the rotary discs are rotatably supported, the said discs also being supported for limited lateral movement relative to the supports to permit proper engagement of a knife or scissor blade with the disc to insure proper sharpening of the blade.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l-is a perspective view of the improved Sharpener.
Figure 2-is a vertical section through thc improved Sharpener.
Figure S-is a top plan of the Sharpener.
Figure 4-is a plan view of the blank fromV which the supporting structure is made. o
Figure -is a detail section through the blank showing it partially formed.
Figure G-is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 7-is a section through the modified form.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved Sharpener comprises a carrying plate l which is constructed of sheet metal, and has a perforated attaching base 2 which is adapted to be attached byV screws or the like to any suitable support. The blank from which the carrying plate 1 is formed is provided with a centrally `disposed slot 3 extending upwardly from the base 2, and it has a pair ofl tongues 4 one formed on each of the sections 5 and 6 which are formed by the slot 3. As clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the section 6 is offset laterally with respect to the section 5 so as to permit overlapping of the inner edges of the discs 7. The discs T are constructed of tool steel or any other suitable hardened steel, and have central or axial openings 8 into which the trunnions or bearings 9 are forced to rotatably support the discs. The tongues 4 are bent down against the outer sides of the discs 7 so as to hold the discs on their bearings 9 and prevent lateral displacement of the discs. However, the tongues 4 are spaced suiiiciently from the discs and the openings 8 are of suiiicient size as to permit limited lateral pivoted movement of the discs so as to allow the perimeters ofthe discs to be positioned at an acute angle to the direction of travel of a knife blade thereover, so as to provide the proper sharpening action of the blade. As clearly shown in the drawings, the bearings or trunnions 9 are struck from the plate l, and are retained integrally therewith being connected to the sections 5 and G by straps 1l which are left in their original integral connection with the bearings 9.
In Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings, a modiiied form comprises a carrying plate 2() which is provided with a horizontal attaching portion 2l and an upright portion 22. The upright portion 22 has a central slot 23 therein, which when a portion of the upright is bent downwardly over the disc 24, forms an upwardly opening slot which is adapted to receive a scissors blade to permit contact or engagement of the scissors blade with the disc 24 for the purpose of sharpening the scissors blade. The disc 24 is rotatably supported by the bearing or trunnion 25 struck from the upright portion of the carrying plate 20 in the same manner in, which the bearings 9 are formed. The edges of the blade receiving opening 26 may be angled as desired, for the purpose of regulating the proper angle of the scissors blade with respect to the rotary sharpening disc 24. It is to be understood that in use, the horizontal portions are to be used for attaching the Sharpener to any suitable sup dort.
1 It is, of course, to be understood, that the invention may be constructed lin various other manners and the parts associated in dill'erent relations, and therefore, 'I do not desire to be limited in any manner, except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
llfhat I elaiin is l. In a Sharpener, a carrying plate, rotary sharpening dises, said dises provided with central openings, dise bearings struck from the earrjing plate and engaging in eaid openings for rotatably supporting said dises and tongues eonneeting vthe disc bearings and carrying plate.
In a Sharpener, a carrying plate, rotary Sharpening dises.y said dises provided with central openings, `disc bearings struck from the CarrVl ng plate and engaging in Said ooeninjre rotatably Supporting Said ier tongues formed integrally with and connecting;- the dise hearings and carrying plate and tongues ornied on said carrying platee `andhent downwardly over ysaid dises,
3. ln a eharpener, a carrying plate, rotary sharpening dises, said dises vprovided with central openings, dise bearings struck from the carrying plate and engaging in said openings for rotatably supporting said discs, tongues 'termed integrally with and connecting the dise hearings and carrying plate, said Carrying plate having laterally oll'set portions to permit overlapping oj the adjacent portions of said discs.
ln a Sharpener, a Carrying plate, rotary sharpening dises, said dises provided with central openings and hearings Struck from the oarrying plate and engaging in said openiiige4 for rotatably supporting said dises, Said carrying plate provided` with a slot and having the portion on one eide ot' said alot ollset laterally with respect to lthe porlion on the other side of the Slot whereby said dises ma) overlap at the portions t ring with said ISlot, tongues 'formed upon Said bearing plate and bent downwardly over said dises Vto prevent displacement oi 1the dises, iaid `tongues adapted to permit limited lateral displacement ot the dises.
In testimony whereolI l alli); my ignature GEORGE JONES.
