WATERPROOF DETACHABLE COVER FOR HAND CARRIED CASES Filed Nov. 9, 1944 INVENTOR.
waterproof Patented Dec. 9, 1947 WATERPROOF DE ACHABLE COVER FOR HAND CARRIED CASES Mannie Allen, Brooklyn,.N. Y.
Application November 9, 1944, Serial No. 562,597
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a detachable waterproof cover for brief, suit, week-end, and other types of hand carried cases for holding personal objects, records or tools, and its leading object is the provision of a detachable cover which can be quickly attached to a brief case or any other type of case, by means of special openings formed in the cover and slide fasteners arranged to close these openings.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a detachable waterproof cover for lug gage cases, having special slots to allow the handles of the luggage case to extend outwardly, and one slide fastener controlled opening, through which access is obtained to the contents of the case, and another slide fastener controlled opening, through which the cover is slipped over th luggage case.
With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the accompanyign drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a view of the improved cover in perspective, mounted on a luggage case having two side handles.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the case.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View, partly broken away.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, taken on line l-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view, on a reduced scale, of a modified form of the invention; applied to a suit case having a single handle.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical application of the invention, 5 designates a detachable cover constructed of material, and provided with side walls ,6 and 7, end walls 8 and 9, a bottom wall it), and a top wall H, which is divided into the sections Ma and Nb, to provide an entrance through which access is obtained to the interior of the luggage case l2, enclosed by the cover 5. This luggage case is provided with the usual closure 53, which is shown to be located at the top thereof.
The bottom wall it) is preferably formed of heavy leather adapted to resist impact with the ground and other surfaces, and to resist wear, and this wall is connected to the side wall 6 and the end walls 8 and 9 by the stitching l4, and is connected to the side wall 1 by means of the slide fastener l5, which includes the usual mating or interlocking elements and the slide I6 for moving these elements into and out of interlocking relation with each other. The slide fastener l5 is located at the lower side portion of the side wall 1 and is spaced above the lower face of the bottom wall, so that the interlocking elements of the slide fastener will not be brought into direct engagement with the floor or other surface against which the covered luggage case is placed.
The side wall 6 is formed with a slot Ba to receive the side handle I2a of the luggage case and the side wall I is formed with a slot la to receive the side handle 12b of the luggage case. The marginal edges of these slots are suitably reinforced by the hemming 1".
The side sections Ha and llb of the top wall H are coupled to each othenby means of the slide fastener l1, and a flap l8 serves to protect the interlocking elements of this slide fastener from the rain. The opening formed by the side sections Ha and Nb extends across the top of the cover to the upper ends of the end walls thereof, and the slide fastener also extends to the upper ends of the end walls of the cover, so that an entrance of adequate capacity will be provided, for the insertion and the removal of the luggage case l2, the side handles of this luggage case being easily pushed through the slots 5a and la of the side walls 6 and I of the cover.
In order substantially to protect the openings formed by these handle slots from the rain or dust, a closure strap I9 is attached to the side wall 6 and extends across the top wall and downward across the slot 1a and is coupled in place by means of the snap fastener 29, one element of which is secured to the end of the strap [9 and the other element of which is secured to the side wall I. The opening formed by the gap between the side wall 1 and the bottom wall, and controlled by the slide fastener l5 may serve to receive the luggage case, and the opening at the top of the cover may be used only for withdrawing articles from the luggage case, or placing articles in the luggage case, and one opening will cooperate with the other opening in placing the cover completely over the luggage case, as one hand can be inserted through one of the openings to pull the luggage case into the cover, while the other hand pulls the luggage case cover on the luggage case.
In Fig. 6 the use of the detachable cover 2| on a suit case is shown, and the cover in this case is provided with a top wall 2| which is split to provide a top opening, and this opening is closed by two slide fasteners 22 and 23, which are spaced apart to provide a handle slot 24 between the same, through which the central handle 25 of the enclosed luggage or suit case may project. The slide fastener 22 is provided with a slide 22a and the slide fastener 23 is provided with a slide 23a, and these slides move to releasing positions outwardly from the handle slot and down along the end walls 26 of the cover.
The cover 2| is further provided with an entrance 21, which is closed by the slide fastener 28, and a protecting flap 29 is provided over this slide fastener. This entrance and the slide fastener closure therefor are located a considerable distance, relatively, from the lower or bottom wall of the cover, and below the longitudinal side center of the cover.
The detachable waterproof cover will protect expensive luggage cases from rain and dust, so that such cases may be presentable after their covers have been taken off the same. The covers also take up superficial wear, and can be made to sell at relatively low prices.
'It is understood that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to, and that I have a choice of all materials available for the purpose, and all seams and jointing required to fabricate these materials, to produce a neat fitting and waterproof closure or cover for luggage cases, and that each cover will be designed to fit one particular type of luggage case, so that it will have a tailored fit and will not be readily detectable when the cover case is carried through trafiic.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
The combination with a hand carried case having a top opening and handles located on either side of the top opening, of a cover for the case having side walls and end walls connected to each other, and a bottom wall and a divided top Wall connected to the end walls and to the side walls, the divided top wall being provided with a slide fastener located over the top opening of the case and the side walls being provided with openings to allow the handles of the case to project outwardly of the cover, a flap for substantially closing these openings secured at one end to one of the side walls of the cover and.
having detachable connection with the other side wall of the cover, one side Wall being connected to one side edge of the bottom wall of the cover, and a slide fastener connecting the other side wall to the opposite side edge of the bottom wall,
, the cover being constructed to be slipped over the case by releasing the slide fastener lastnamed from closing position to allow the adjacent connectable edges of the engaged side wall and bottom wall to be separated from each other to provide an opening at the base of the cover large enough to receive the case.
