SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,776, dated June 14, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LYLE B. HOLMES, of Woodland, county of Yolo, State of California, have invented a Billiard-Chalk Holder;

and I hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a novel device for holding the chalk which is used for billiardcues, and in so adjusting the holder that the chalk may be easily brought to the point where it is to be used, and then returned to'aposition which will be out of the way; and it consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter specifically described and claimed, as

will be more fullyexplained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my holder suspended with a counter-weight or spring. Fig. 2 shows it attached to the table, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the holder itself.

A is my chalk-holder, which may be made either cylindrical, square, or in other suitable form, and open at both ends. The upper end I is made large enough to receive a piece of 2 5 chalk of the desired size, and the lower end is slightly contracted by the opening being tapered, so as to bind or hold it in place and prevent it from falling out, while at the same time it will allow the chalk to be forced forward 0 when it has been worn close up to the socket,

and it is necessary to cause it to project beyond it. I prefer to form this lower end with two or three projecting ends, B, which may be elastic or slightly contracted or turned in, and

3 5 these will hold the chalk against ordinary pressure from the rear.

, A handle, 0, fits into the upper or rear end of the holder, and is locked by short pins D turning into slots D, or a bayonet-joint, as

shown. The center of that portion of the bandle which fits into the holder is bored out to receive a spiral spring, E. This spring has a Hat disk, F, secured to its lower end, and when the handle is fitted into the holder this disk presses upon the rear end of the chalk by the 5 action of the spring, thus holding it firmly in place and forming a sufficient backing for it as it is pushed forward. The end. of the handle has a ring, screw-eye, or other device, G, to which a cord, H, is attached. This cord may be passed over a pulley, I, in the ceiling or above the table and have a counter-weight attached to it; or the cord itself may be elastic and be attached above the table. This allows the chalk and holder to be drawn down bythe player when he wishes to chalk his cue, and when released it will be drawn up just high enough to be out of the way. A single one may be suspended centrally, or two or more may be suspended at the sides of the table.

I am aware that devices or sockets for bolding billiard-chalk have heretofore been made. and supported by retracting or elastic cords, and hence I make 'no broad claim to such devices; but, 6 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure lby Letters Patent, is-

The chalk-holder A, provided with a tapering opening, projections B, and diagonal slots D, in combination with the inclosed plate and spring E F, and the removable handle 0, provided with studs D, all constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
