Description

(M-odel.)
J. W; GALEP. Shears. 'No. 240,884. Patent ed May 3,1881.
yimi mnll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH \V. OALEF, OF NORTH EASTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE B. PARKINSON, OF BOSTON MASSAGHUSETTS.
SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,884, dated May 3, 1881.
Application filed March 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. CALEF, of North Easton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Shears; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the'invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
1 0 reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an end or edge view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sliding cutter jaw or blade with its link, showing also the upper part of the lever or handle with which it is connected.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to hand-shears for cutting sheet metal or other tough material; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described, whereby the shears are adapted to cut through the sheet metal or other material operated upon with comparativelylittle expenditure of power.
In the annexed drawings,Aand B represent the jaws or cutters of my improved shears, the
base A of one of which has a chamber, a, open at both ends and at the top and bottom, and reeessedor grooved longitudinally, as shown at b, to form ways for the shank or base B of the slidingjawB, which is inserted into and works 3 5 in the chamber a.
At the inner end of the base Bthat is, the end opposite to its j aw B-is pivoted, in a downward-projectin g stud, d, a link or arm, 0, which extends back under the base, and is pivoted at its other endin the upper corner of the lever or handle D, which is cut out or recessed, as
(ModeL) shown at], to receive it. That part of lever D D which extends into the chambered base A is flattened and made with a shoulder or projecti0n,g,opposite to its recessed partf, through which the fulcrum pin or boltE is inserted. The jaw A and its cham bered base A are in one piece with the handle F.
Bythe construction and combination of the jaw B with its shank or base B, rearwardly-ex- 5o tending link 0, and lever D D, all these parts, when properly connected, may be inserted and fulcrumed into the chambered base A of the oppositejaw, the handle D working on the same side as the jaw B, which it operates, so that all that remains to complete thetool is toinsert the fulcrum pin or bolt E.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my improved shears will readily be understood, and requires no further explanation.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in shears, the cuttergjaw B, having the base B, provided at itsiuner end with the link 0, in combination with the flattened lever D D having recess fand perforated shoulder g, and the jaw A, constructed with the chambered base A, having side grooves or recesses b, and handle F, said lever D D having its fulcrum upon the pin or bolt E, inserted through its perforated shoulder g, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. (JALEF.
