Description
Feb-2K, 1950 F. Y. KURIYAMA FOUNTAIN PEN Filed Sept. 21, 1946 Inventor mir /lama alllllllllllllllllll' m 2 m Y F Patented Feb. 21, 1950 Fred Yoshiharu; Kuriyama; Honolulu,
Territory of Hawaii Applicationseptem'ber 21, 1946, *Serial No; 698,455"- s claimst- (Cl. 120-42m3) My inventionrel'ates to improvements in fountain pens.
The primary object of the invention is toi-provide a fountain pen with simply constructed, inexpensive means operative by: a finger of a hand grasping the pento eitherhouse the -pen point for'protection purposes, or, exposesaidpen point for writingpurpo'ses.
Another object isto -providea fountain pen with means of the character and for the purpose above set forth which is operative byLeasy, light pressure on the pen clip."
To the accomplishment of the above-and-subordinate objects appearing, a preferred embodiment of myinvention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawingse't forth in-detail in the succeeding'des'cription, and defined in the claims appended i thereto.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is aview in perspective illustratingzthe manner in whichthe clip-forming bar, out'er.rand inner caps, and-spreader member-may b'wdetached as a unit from thepen barreli Figure 2 is a fragmentary'viewpartlyin longi tudinal section and partly'in'side*elevati'on drawn to an enlarged scale-and illustrating the parts in normal position with the inner cap housing the pen point.-
Figure-3 is a similar view with the parts in the rearward limit of movement thereof and the sections of the inner cap opened toexpose the. pen point.
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the parts disassembled.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in plan drawn to a smaller scale;
Figure 6' is arfragmentary" view in-transverse section drawn to a larger scale and illustrating the manner in whichithe sections of the inner cap are hinged.
Referring to the drawing by numerals accord ing to-my invention a fountain pen is provided comprising a barrel l having a slightlyreduced, externally threaded, front end section- 2 fixed therein, in-any suitable-manner, with a cylini drical, reduced neck 2 extending-forwardly.therefrom along the axis of thebarrel l and in which the usual pen point 4 is suitably fixed, together with the usual ink feeder bar 5.
An outer cap 6 having the form of a fiat nosed bullet is threaded onto the front section 2, and which is open at the front end 1 thereof, and extends forwardly of the neck 3, but with the pen point 4 and feed bar 5 extending out of said front end thereof in the axis of the same. The
2 outer'cap': 6' is provided in one side'thereof'with a longitudinal slot 8 extending from the rear end of said-cap-toa central cross slot=9 in said cap into which the "front end of theslot 8 opens in the center thereof. An internal-,- annular shoulder ID is provided in the outer cap6 adjacent the rear-end thereof and spaced forwardlyof the section 2 for a-purpose presently clear.
An inner' cap 5 :i i of forwardly tapering -form; with a rounded front'endl2, is' providedin the outer-"cap 6 to be slid endwise forwardlyiand rearwardly into and out et the front end 1 of saidcap't,"respectively; The inner cap ll is split longitudinally into a "pair *of' half sections l3, l4 adapted'to mate side'by side, in edge-toedge closed relation, and which are hinged at the rear ends-thereof, and at confrontingside edges on one sideofv-the cap, bypins 'l5; to the front end of a rearwardlyextendingspring bar-I 64 The spring bar I G'is provided with :an-out-turned, right-angled, rear. end I! formed Witha-reduced terminal 'l8" adapted to extend out of the outer cap s' through the slots 8,- 9 and to slidably' fit in the slot 9. The rearend ll inwardly'of the terminal l8'is wider than the slot 8 and designed to extend through the slot 9 and block sliding of the terminal 18 out of theslot 9 into the front end of said slot B," and is also designed to snap behind the shoulder Ill, all for a purpose presently seen.
A clip forming bar 'l9 is-fixed, in'any suitable manner, adjacent its front 'end, on the terminal l8 atarightangle'to said end H to extend alongside the'outer cap fi andflbarreli with its'front end portion normally spaced from the outer 'cap 6 by the spring bar I6.
A -tubular spreader m'emb'er 20 surrounds the neck-3,: within the outer cap 6, with a rear, annular flange -2! of right angled cross'section clamped between the" shoulder" Iii-and the-front end section 2 of the'barrel l and Whichfits-part Way into the inner cap II with an outer'end, external, circumferentialiflange 22 flush with-the front end I of the-out'ercap 6. The' spreader member 20 has a tapered 1 front end portion 2 3 and the inner cap I I slides forwardly and rear.- wardly on-said portion 23 and on the flangef22. Inthe rearward sl-iding move'ment of the inner cap II, the sections 13, I4 thereof are spread apart by said portion 23 and the flange 22. This spreading apart or opening of the sections l3, l4 occurs as the inner cap H is moved rearwardly from a normal forward position presently explained.
Referring now to the use and operation of the housing the pen point 4, all as shown in Figure i:
2. In this position of the parts, the rear end I! of the spring bar It extends across the front end of the slot 9 and prevents rearward movement of the inner cap H so that said cap is locked in the described normal position there-' of in which the pen point 4 is completely housed. Now, by pressing the clip-forming bar. IS, inwardly, in opposition to the spring bar 16, by means of a finger of a hand holding the pen, said end I! may be moved from in front of the slot 8 to unlock the inner cap H, after which the clip-forming bar 19 may be moved rearwardly by said finger with the terminal l8 of the spring bar l6 sliding in the slot 8 into a normal limit of movement established by engagement of said end ll of the spring bar It with the flange 21 of the spreader member 25:. Thus, the inner cap H may be slid rearwardly into a corresponding limit of rearward movement. In such rearward movement of the inner cap H, the sections l3, I4 are spread open by the spreader member 20 to expose the writing portion of the pen point 4. In the rearward limit of movement of the clip-forming bar 19, and the spring bar It,
the end ll of said bar 16 snaps behind the flange l and locks the parts in the rearward limit of movement thereof and with the sections 63, i l open and the pen point 4 exposed and extending forwardly of the front end 12 of said inner cap H. The clip-forming bar 19 may be used in the usual manner, as will be clear. As shown in Figure l, by unscrewing the outer cap from the section 2, the clip-forming bar 19, inner cap H, and spreader member 20 may be detached, as a unit therewith to 'permit the pen point 4 and front end of the barrel I to be dipped in ink for filling of the barrel in the usual manner.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation,
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departin from the inventive concept, and right is herein rereserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
