It; is, another object, o f my present invention te. make the casingL shape retaining, despite the of.. flexible. Slide` fastener members.
jects and advantages thereof, will be best underst oodj from the 'folrowingdescription of specific 'embodiments when read in connection with the n accompanying drawings; inw which:
Fig; ris a vertical-section through the side Walls ofacarrying-case-acccrdingto my present invention, along line l-I of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a top view-of a part of the body of a carrying case, seen in direction of arrows, 2.--2
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a modified arrangement similar to the one shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but provided with a lining, along line 3--3 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 4 is a top view of the body of the carrying case shown in Fig. 3, seen in direction of arrows 4--4 of Fig. 3.
My present invention is described in the following as used for hat boxes. However, I wish to stress that it might be used for other carrying cases having a body and a cover and being closed by slide fasteners arranged along the edges of the same.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a hat box of the type proposed by me has a curved body wall I and a curved cover wall II. The slide fastener strips I2 and I3 are secured by stitched seams I4 and I5 to the inner walls I6 and of the side walls I0 and I I, respectively. These slide fastener strips I2 and I3 are arranged so as to project with the engaging fastener members I8 and I9 well beyond the free top edge of the body Wall IIJ and the free bottom edge 2| of the cover wall II, respectively.
' side' walls ofV thecase.
In order to prevent bendingl ofthe exible slide fastener. stripsk I2` and I3 when theycase is closed, I provide in accordance. wtnfmy presentinvention two stiff reinforcing; strips Z2 and v233. se;- cnred tothe side walls Ill: andi Ilz., respectively, by means of the stitched. seams M.- and. l5 so as to cover the. inner faces of theslide fastener strips I2 and I3 respectively.
These. reinforcing strips: 22i-a-nd` 23I are; shaped so that the top,A edge 24v of the body reinforcing strip 22 is locatedy slightly under the. free top edge 25;l of the fastener membersA |8 andthe free edge 25 of the cover reinforcing strip. 23 is locatedslightly above the free bottom edge 2I of thefastener members` I9. In .this` way,itA is pos-- sible to enable proper abutment of these edges 24'r and 26 ofthe reinforcing. stripsf22 and 23 when the fastener members. I8 and I9.- are in engagement, reaching into each other.
It is evident that thesereinforcing` strips which are, as explained above,` made of Vstili rigid material are adapted to take up and withstand' compression` forces exerted in 'direction of arrows 28, thereby preventing compression of the flexible fastener strips I2 and |'3 and'y holding the case in its proper shape.
In Fig. 3, I'have shown the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 provided with additional means for properlyy securing linings to the edges of the In View ofthe fact that many parts of the construction shown in Figs. 3 and'- 4 are-identical with thecorresponding parts of Figs. 1 and 2, I have indicated corresponding parts with the same reference numerals and will not describe them below in detail.
In order to secure the linings 29 and 3|.) to the side Walls IIJ and II, respectively, along their edges 2D and 2|. I provide additional reinforcing strips 3| and 32, respectively. These additional reinforcing strips 3| and 32 are secured together with the slide fastener strips |2 and I3 and the main reinforcing strips 22 and 23 by means of stitched rows 33 and 34 to the side walls IIJ and II, respectively.
It should be stressed that these additional reinforcing strips are preferably shaped so that the free top edge 35 of the additional reinforcing strip 3| is located slightly under the free top edge 24 of the main body reinforcing strip 22, and that the free bottom edge 36 of the additional reinforcing strip 32 is located slightly above the free bottom edge 26 of the main cover reinforcing strip 23.
The linings 29 and 30 are introduced between the reinforcing strips 22, 3|, and 23, 32, respecallgaeu;
tively, and bent over the free edges 35 and 36 of the corresponding additional reinforcing strips 3| and 32, respectively, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. It is clear from this figure that by this arrangement it is possible to properly space the exposed edges 31 and 38 of the linings 29 and 30, respectively, from the slide fastener members I8 and i9 and thus to prevent any injury to the linings during closing and opening of these fastener members.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also nd a useful application in other types of carrying cases, diiering from the types described above.
While I have illustrated and described the invention as embodied in hat boxes, I do not intend to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the scope of my invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of my invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specic aspects of this invention, and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a carrying case including a body member and a cover member, in combination, a first stripshaped slide fastener member secured to a top edge of said body member on an inner surface thereof so that its top edge is spaced upwardly beyond said top edge of said body member; a second strip-shaped slide fastener member secured to a bottom edge of said cover member on an inner surface thereof so that its bottom edge is spaced downwardly beyond said bottom edge of said cover member and adapted to engage said first strip-shaped slide fastener member; a rst body reinforcing strip secured to said body member and covering at least an inner surface of said first strip-shaped slide fastener member along the top edge of said body member so that its free top edge is spaced upwardly beyond said top edge of said body member and is located slightly 4 under the top edge of said first strip-shaped slide fastener member; a second body reinforcing strip secured to said body member and positioned inwardly of said first body reinforcing strip and extending upwardly substantially to the free top edge of said first body reinforcing strip; a rst lining sheet secured to said body member and positioned between said rst and second body reinforcing strips and extending over the upper edge of said second body reinforcing strip and thence extending downwardly; a first cover reinforcing strip secured to said cover member and covering at least an inner surface of said stripshaped slide fastener member along the bottom edge of said cover member and extending downwardly beyond said bottom edge of said cover member with its free bottom edge located slightly above the bottom edge of said second strip-shaped slide fastener member, said free bottom edge of said first cover reinforcing strip abutting the free top edge of said rst body reinforcing strip when said first and second strip-shaped slide fastener members are in engaged position; a second cover reinforcing strip secured to said cover member and positioned inwardly of said first cover reinforcing strip and extending downwardly substantially to the free bottom edge of said first cover reinforcing strip; and a second lining sheet secured to said cover member and positioned between said first and second cover reinforcing strips and extending over the bottom edge of said second cover reinforcing strip and thence extending upwardly.
