'- P 1949. H A. M. CONROY ETAL 2,482,656
HOLDI NG AND MOUNTINGDEVICE FOR ELECTRIC LIGHT SOCKETS Filed Feb. 2) 1948 George Edward Conroy INVENTORS I BY Patented Sept. 20, 1949 HOLDING AND MOUNTING DEVICE FOR ELECTRIC LIGHT SOCKETS Hilma A. M. Conroy and George Edward Conroy, Ossining, N. Y.
Application February 2, 1948, Serial No. 5,862
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a holding and mounting device for the electric light sockets of Christmas tree lighting outfits, and has more particular reference to an improved device of this kind which simulates the body of a candle and produces the efiect of a burning candle when the lamp in the socket held by the device is lighted.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of the above kind which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be readily applied to the lighting outfit and mounted on or removed from the branch of the Christmas tree. 7
The exact nature of the present invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a central vertical section through the device of Figure 1, with the device mounted on the branch of a Christmas tree and holding a socket carrying an electric light bulb;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section through the device alone, taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view showing a portion of a lighting outfit with one of the present devices operatively associated with each of a plurality of the bulb-carrying sockets of the outfit.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present device consists of an elongated cylindrical tube 5 which is made of pasteboard or other suitable material and is slotted longitudinally from end to end at one side, as at 6. The split tube is resilient and is adapted to snugly receive an electric light socket in the upper end thereof, with the external flange 8 on the upper end of the socket seated on the upper end edge of the tube. The wires Sconnected to the socket are entered within the tube 5 through the slot 6 so as to extend through the lower end of the tube.
Near its lower end, the tube 5 has a circumferential elongated slot In that extends substantially one-half the circumference of the tube and is adapted to have the branch ll of a Christmas tree wedged therein so that the device is effectively held in an upright position on the branch with the latter disposed substantially diametrically of the tube. The slot 10 is preferably centrally intersected by the slot 6, as shown, and the longitudinal walls of slot II) are serrated as at I2 at B, the wires 9 will remain within the tube and Will present a most sightly appearance by not protruding from the tube between its ends.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction, manner of use and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. Minor changes in details of construction may be resorted to, such as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What we claim as new is:
1. A holding and mounting device for an electric light socket, comprising an elongated cylindrical tube slotted longitudinally from end to end at one side, said tube being resilient and adapted to snugly receive an electric light socket in the upper end thereof with the external flange on the upper end of the socket seated on the upper end edge of the tube, the longitudinal slot permitting entry of the wires connected to the socket therethrough within the tube so as to extend through the lower end of the latter, said tube further having a circumferential elongated slot near its lower end that extends substantially onehalf the circumference of the tube and is adapted to have the branch of a Christmas tree wedged therein so that the device is held in an upright position on the branch with the latter disposed substantially diametrically of the tube.
2. The constructiondefined in claim 1, wherein the circumferential slot is cent ally intersected by the longitudinal slot.
