SANDING BLOCK Filed Oct. 14, 1.947

Patented June 21, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SANDING BLOCK Joseph Paul, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application October 14, 1947, Serial No. 779,793
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to sanding blocks designed for supporting sandpaper or emery paper in such a way as to facilitate the sanding of surfaces.
An important object of the invention is to provide a block which is so constructed that the sandpaper or emery paper may be readily and easily removed therefrom and replaced.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a sanding block which may be operated close to the edge of molding or surfaces extended at right angles to the surface being sanded.
Still another object of the invention is to construct a sand block so that it may be readily gripped by the operator, protecting flaps being provided to protect the fingers of the operator against contact with the rough sand or emery paper used on the block.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a sanding block constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
' Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the sanding block comprises the body portion 5 which is formed with upstanding ribs 6 formed along the longitudinal side edges thereof, the ribs 6 being formed with beveled surfaces, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing.
Cooperating with the body portion 5, is the upper movable section 1 which is of a width equal to the width of the body portion, and is provided with depending ribs B, which ribs are spaced from the side edges of the upper movable section, and are so shaped that they present beveled surfaces that cooperate with the inner beveled surfaces of the ribs 6 in gripping the sanding paper which is indicated by the reference character 9, therebetween. The reference character 10 indicates an elongated block which is disposed between the ribs' 6 of the body portion, the elongated block being of a length to extend through- 2 out th length of the body portion. This block is of a width so that spaces H are provided between the side edges of the block and the inner surfaces of the ribs 6. The block it is secured to the body portion, by means of the screws l2.
An opening I3 is formed in the lower surface of the block II], at a point intermediate the ends of the block, the opening being designed to accommodate a nut It to which the threaded end of the screw [5 extends. This screw [5 also extends through the elongated opening IS, the screw also passing through the block ll that rests on the upper movable section l, directly over the opening it, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing.
By rotatin the screw I5 within the nut i l, it will be seen that the upper movable section I will be clamped between the block ii and elongated block I0.
Screws 2!] are also extended through the block, the pointed ends thereof contacting the sand paper while the sand paper is being drawn tightly around the block, the pointed ends of the screws 25! cutting into the sand paper holding the paper taut while the sections of the block ar being drawn together.
It will, of course, be understood that the sand paper which is stretched over the block, is of a length so that it will pass between the ribs 6 and 8 of the members 5 and i, so that the sand paper will be clamped in position and held securely while it is being moved over the surface being sanded.
As shown by Figure 3, the ends of the said paper extend to positions where they are overlapped on the upper surface of the block iii, the sand paper being formed with notches l8 providing a clearance for the screw l5.
Secured to the extended longitudinal lower edges of the upper movable section "5, are leather protecting strips 19 which overlie portions of the sand paper which would fall opposite to the fingers of the hand gripping the sanding block while in operation. These strips of leather l9 lie squarely against the sanding paper resting on the outer surfaces of the ribs 5.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a sanding block which may be readily gripped by the operator and held in such a way that the sanding block may be' moved close to edges being sanded, and that the operators fingers and hands will be protected against abrasion by sand paper, while the sanding block is in op eration.
What is claimed is:
1. A sanding block comprising removably con! nected upper and lower sections between which an abrasive sheet is held, means for securing the abrasive sheet to the sanding block embodying, upwardly extended ribs formed along the longitudinal side edges of the lower section, the side surfaces of the ribs being beveled, ribs formed on the lower surface of the upper section, the side surfaces of the latter ribsbeing-beveled, the beveled surfaces of said sections cooperating in gripping the abrasive sheet therebetween, a rectangular block secured between the upper and lower sections, the ends of the abrasive sheet being also clamped between the block and upper section; and means for forcing the upper section into clamping relation with the block securing the abrasive sheet therebetween.
2. A sanding block comprising removably-connected upper and lower sections between which an abrasive sheet is held,'means for securing the abrasive sheet to the sanding block embodying, upwardly extended ribs formed along the longitudinal side edges of the lower section, the side surfaces of the ribs being beveled, ribs formed on the lower surface of the upper section, the side surfaces of the'l'atter ribs being bevelecLthe REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
