HAND-BUFFER.
' Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented' March 10, 1908.
Application filed Octohenl, 1907. SeriabNlmAOBB.
To all whom' 'Lt may concern:
Be it' known that I, FRANK B. DEMING, a citizen. of the United States, residing' at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of- Ohio, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Hand-Buffers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable Otliers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention in its broadest sense, relates to the art of grinding and polishing articles of manufacture; but more (particularly stated it comprises a new an improved construction of hand-buffer for shop uses, designed and employed cliieilylfor finishing and polishing meta articles in t e usual course of production, while held in a vise, a lathe, or the hand of a mechanic. suited for various analogous uses and for similarl finishing articles of wood or other materia s lsuch as patterns, or, when provided with suitable abrading surfaces, for.
scouring polishing and sharpening articles of cutlery andedge tools.
The invention consists in the construction novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this ap lication, and whereon like numerals of re erence indicate correspondthe several views: Figure 1 rep'- resents in Y ig. 2 is an'edge view of thesame. Figs, 3 and 4 are longitudinal central sections throughthe 'clamping ends of the tool.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged central section taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 3, and, Figs. 6 and 7 are detached perspective views of the clamps. l
Reference being had tothe drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates the buffer body preferabl of vhard wood or other suitable material 'ght in weight, of rectangular cross' section as shown in the'present drawings,
tersunk or depressed and iinished at one end with an' integral handle 2. On both sides of the handle end of body 1 'are fixed clamps 3, 3 formed of sheet metal folded upon itself as at 4, 4 to produce open ended ockets 5, 5, and counush with the surface of said body portion.
At its, opposite or outer end the body 1 is provided with an end wear-'plate 6 threaded clamps -3 and 10 `It is alsc well erspective my invention in its 'l the spirit .formed of sheet metal fo as at 7 latter shouldered at 9 as shown.` Mounted uponthe: shoulder 9 of said screw 8 isa relatively adjustable clam 10 having a central perforation 1I throu which projects the head of screw 8. T is double adjustable clam 10 embraces the extremity of' body 1 and its' wearhplate 6 aforesaid, and is preferablyformed of sheet metal folded upon itself. at 12, 12 to produce open ended pockets 13, 13 on both sides of the body portion 1; similar to the aforesaid pockets 5, 5 of the relatively fixed clamps 3, 3'. The ed es of all are slightly roug. ened by projecting clutch-points 14, which assist in retainin in operative position strips of emery c oth or other abrading lmaterial 15, 15as clearly shown by the drawings.
This being a description of my present invention, its use and operation are too selfevide'nt to require more than passing notice; it'will be noted, however, that the abrading materialfolded. at its ends is irstintroduced into the relatively fixed and adjustable pockets 5 and 13 upon both sides of the body portion 1. VBy Vagency of screw 8 and its vshoulder 9 the adjustable clamp 10 may thereu i on be backed off from wear plate 6 thus p acing the abrading material under tension, and the tool in condition for use.
This being a description of my invention in its referred lform `of construction, `it shouldbe understood that various changes ma be made and substituted for the form an arrangement of parts herein shown and described without in the least departing from set forth inthe claims following. 1. In a hand buffer'the combination with a body portion, of anad'ustable end-clamp lded upon itself to produce an open ended pocket, an adjusting screw interposed and end-clamp,- material secured and a strip of abrading at one end in said pocket orsicn to receive an adjusting screw 8` the of the invention which will now be between said body portion 'and at its opposite end to the body portion aforesaid, substantially as described.
. -2. In a hand buffer the combination with a body portion, of anadjustable outer endclanip formed of sheet metal folded upon itself to produce open ended pockets on both4 'sides of said body portion, projecting clutchpoints on the edges of said folded clamp memer, and a strip of abrading material 'extending from each of said pockets over said clutchpoints and secured at the opposite end to the Iii body portion aforesaid,v substantially' as described;
3. In a hand buiier the combination with a body portion, of an adjustable outer endn-iainp embracing said body portion formed sheet metal folded upon itself to produce open ended pockets, an adjusting screw shouldered upon and projecting through said clamp, and strips of abrading material each secured at one end in the aforesaid pockets and at the opposite end in similar pockets 4fixed with relation to the body portion aforesaid, substantially as described.
et. In a hand buier the combination with a body portion, ot relatively xed and adjustable clamps formed of sheet metal folded upon itself to produce open ended pockets, and strip of abradng material secured at subopposite ends in the pockets aforesaid, stantially as described, r v i A,
5. In a hand bnil'er, the combination with a body portion having upon each side of its longitudinal center relatlvely fixed and ad-
