My invention relates to spindles for strip material, and particularly to spindles that are adapted for use for mounting carbon strip material in the attachment for writing machines disclosed and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 594,733, filed May 19, 1945.
In providing a supply of carbon strip material or other similar strip material for feeding into a mechanism, such material is wound on a spindle, which is usually of a tubular character and made of fibrous material, such as cardboard or any other suitable substance. Also in devices such as the above referred to attachment for writing machines the strip material after having been used may be wound onto a similar spindle, upon which the same accumulates until a sufficient amount has been collected thereon for disposal in any desired manner.
As such spindles as carry the strip material, such as that above referred to, may be positively driven from a stem to which suitable driving means may be connected in any desired manner, it is necessary that the spindle and stem be so connected that the spindle will be rotated in unison with the stem. At the same time, in machines in which strip material is supplied in rolls wound on a spindle, such as the carbon strip material above referred to, the rolls of material must be detachably mounted so that when all of the material has been taken ofi a spindle a new spindle with an additional supply of material can be substituted therefor.
As the stems are ordinarily made of a rigid material of considerable strength, such as metal, wood, plastic or the like, and the spindles are made of material that does not have any great strength, such as cardboard or plies of paper or other fibrous material formed into a tube, it is difficult to provide a good connection between the spindle and the stem member that will remain fixed relative to the fibrous material of the spindle and will be readily connectible and disconnectible from the stem in such a manner as to be keyed thereto to rotate the spindle in unison with the stem.
- It is a particular purpose of my invention to provide a spindle construction for strip material, and particularly connecting means carried by a spindle for engagement with a stem of a particular construction, whereby said spindle and stem can be detachably connected so that while in connected position said stem and spindle will rotate as'a unit. This is accomplished by providing a clip, which has means thereon that cooperates with interfitting means on the stem to key the stem and the spindle together, and which is provided with means engaging the spindle so as to be held in fixed position thereon.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the description of the drawings proceeds. I desire to have it understood, however, that I do not intend to limit myself to the particular details shown or described, except as defined in the claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, is shown one form of my invention. The spindle I3 is made in th form of a tubular member of fibrous material, or cardboard, or plies of paper, as is customary with spindles of this character. Cooperating with the spindle I3 is a stem I4, which has a head 15 having a reduced portion i6 adapted to enter the tubular spindle l3, said reduced portion having a fiat face ill provided with a narrow longitudinal rib l8 and having a curved face 19 fitting within the spindle I 3, as will be obvious from Fig. 2.
The spindle I3 is provided with a notch or recess 20 therein, and a clip having an outer leg 2l' and an inner le 22 is mounted on said tubular spindle l3 with the legs 2! in engagement with the outer surface of said tubular spindle and the leg 22 in engagement with the inner surface thereof. The inner and outer legs 2i and 22 of said clip are connected by means of a connecting portion, constituting an inwardly extending finger on said clip, which includes a portion 23 extendin at right angles to the outer leg 2i and seated in the recess 20 and a doubled portion comprising the portion 24, which is a continuation of the right angular portion 23 seated in the recess 20, and a portion 25 spaced from the portion 24 and extending parallel thereto, said portions 24 and 25 being connected by means of a U-shaped portion, which is provided with a slot 26 to define a pair of curved legs 27 and 28, which are adapted to fit on opposite sides of the rib I8, the rib l8 fitting in the slot 23 in the U-shaped portion of said clip, as will be obvious from Figs. 1 and 2.
The clip is, preferably, made of metal that has a certain amount of resiliency and is provided With a slightly outwardly curved lip 29 at the extremity of the inner leg 22 so as to facilitate assembly of the clip with the tubular spindle l3. Preferably, the spacing of the legs 2i and 22 is such that the material of the tubular spindle l3 will be under compression when the clip is assembled with the spindle, the material being slightly indented, as indicated at 30. A recess is thus provided in which the leg 2! is seated, which will tend to prevent rotation of the clip around the spindle. However, by providing the recess 2%3 such rotation is entirely prevented, as the side edges of the projection 23 Will be seated against the shoulders formed by provision of the notch or recess 28 in the tubular spindle l3. A pair of prongs 3i may be punched out of the material of the leg 2! if desired, in order to provide means for anchoring the strip material to the spindle.
The clip serves as means for connecting the spindle and the stem. It is light and provides a rigid connection between itself and the spindle, and also a positive driving connection between the spindle and the driving stem l4. In assembling the stem and the spindle the parts are moved axially of each other, the U -shaped portions 2'? and 28 at the bottom of the bends therein engaging with the flat face I? of the reduced portion It of the head it and thus help to guide the rib 18 into the slot 25 between the legs Z'i-and 28 on the clip.
While a relatively large head portion i6 is provided in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, this is not absolutely necessary, as the size of the flat faced portion can beconsiderably reduced and the invention will function in the same manner as above described. In Figs. and 6 a modification of the invention is shown, in which the spindle l3 cooperates with a stem I4, which has a head l5 thereon that has the reduced portion l6 thereof entering the opening in the tubular spindle !3, the portion 13' being of the same general shape as the portion l6 having the fiat face ll, previously described, and the tongue or rib i8, but is considerably smaller than the reduced extension l6 shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive. The clip has the leg 2! engaging the outer face of the tubular member in the same manner as previously described, and may be provided with the prongs 3 l and has the right angu' larly extending portion 23 seated in the recess 29. The doubled portions 24' and25' are considerably longer than the corresponding portions of the inwardly directed finger portion of the clip shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, so as to provide the U-shaped portion having the slot 26' to define the legs 21 and 28' in proper position to cooperate with the rib is that enters said slot 25, the bottommost portion of the bend in the clip again engaging the flat face I? in the manner previously described. Obviously the length of the legs can be varied between the extremes shown for the legs 24 and 25 in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, and for the legs 24' and 25 in Figs. 5 and 6 and the reduced portion of the head on the stem can be made proportionately to provide the proper interfitting relation between the clip and the reduced end portion of the head on the stem. The slotted U-shaped portion providing the pair of legs 27 and 28 or 27' and 28' and the rib I8 or l8 in both forms of the invention provide keying portions for connecting the stem and the spindle so that the same will rotate as a unit. Thus if the stem is positively driven the spindle will be driven to rotate as a unit with said stem.
Instead of providing a flat faced portion such as thereduced portions l6 and [6 have, the projection can be made as shown in Fig. '7, in which the clip is the same as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, butthe reduced portion 13" on the stem that enters the opening in the tubular spindle !3 is' reduced in width as compared with the extentions l6 and I5, but has a curved face 32 that will fit the curvature of the inner face of the tubular wall of the spindle l3. Said extension 53 is also provided with a pair of marginal longitudinally extending ribs 33 that define a pair of grooves 34 in which the legs 2'! and 23 of the clip are seated when the longitudinal keying rib l8" thereon is seated in the slot 26 bet-ween the legs 21 and 28', the grooves 34 aiding in guiding the legs of the clip into proper position so that the slot will receive the rib I8".
In all three forms of the invention above described the top edge'of the rib i8 is curved transversely and the slot '26 is correspondingly curved at its ends.
In Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, a further modification of the invention is shown, in which the tubular spindle 35 is secured to a stem 36, which is pro-' vided with a head portion thereon that has a projection 31 that enters the tubular member 35 and has a curved wall portion 38 conforming to the curvature of the inner face of the tubular wall of the spindle 35. Said projection 31 is provided with a longitudinal slot 53. Said stem 36 is further provided with a 'flange 39, said flange being of the samediameter as the external diameter of the spindle 35, so as to fit over the end of said spindle, said slot extending through said flange and to the outer edge thereof. A connecting clipis provided, which is similar to the clipshownin Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, having the legs 4| and 42' similarly arranged to the legs 21 and 22, previously described, and having the inwardly extending finger having the right angularly extending portion 43 that extends from the leg 4| and the doubled portions 44 and 45 corresponding to the portions 24 and 25of the clip that was previously described. However, in this form of the-invention the 'U-shaped portion 46 is not slotted, but the portions 44,45 and 46 together form a keying projection that fits closely in the slot 53. The leg 42 has a lip portion-'41 that serves the same 'purpose as the lip 29 previously'described, and prongs 48 may be provided for the "same purpose as the prongs 3|. The right angularly extending portion 43, however, has inwardly extending flanges 49 thereon that have sharpened edges 50. thus providing prongs that enter the material of the end edge of the tubular member to thus firmly interlock the clip with the tubular member to prevent any movement of said clip around the circumference of the tube. When the parts are in the assembled position shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the flange 39 on the stem 36 will limit the movement of the stem 38 relative to the spindle 35, so as to prevent slipping of the inwardly directed portion of the clip comprising the leg 44 and from passing entirely through the slot 53. The legs 44 and the portion 43 of the clip will be seated in said slot 53 when the parts are interlocked to rotate together as a unit.
In Figs. 11 and 12 a slight modification of the invention shown in Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, is shown, the legs 44' and 45' of the clip being provided with a slot 5| for receiving a rib 52 extending longitudinally of the slot 53' of the projection 37, said clip being otherwise made as shown in Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, having the prongs corresponding to the prongs 48 shown in the form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, and sharpened edges 50 corresponding to the sharpened edges 50 shown in the form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive. The construction shown in Figs. 11 and 12 would permit the use of either the type of clip shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, or the type shown in Figs. 11 and 12, either with the type of stem projection shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, or that shown in Figs. 11 and 12. Also the slot 53' does not have to be made to fit the clip as closely in the form shown in Figs. 11 and 12 as that shown in Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, a firm interlock being provided between the clip and the spindle, and between the clip and the stem, thus firmly securing the spindle and stem together detachably for rotation as a unit.
In Figs. 13 to 15, inclusive, a further modification of the invention is shown. The clip instead of having a pair of legs engaging the inner and outer faces of the tubular spindle has an elongated body portion 55 engaging the outer face of the spindle 54. said body portion having a right angularly extending portion 56 at one end thereof having a portion 51 forming a finger extending inwardly beyond the wall of the spindle 54 which is slotted at 58 to provide a pair of legs 59 and 60 thereon that lie on opposite sides of the rib 52 on the head 6| on the stem 62. The stem 62 also has a flange 63 thereon, and has a flattened face 64 like the flattened face I! on the stem l4, being shaped like the stem l4 except for the flange 63. Said flange is preferably provided with a groove 65 in which the portions 56 and 51 of the clip seat so that said flange can set against the end face of the tubular spindle 54.
A short prong 66 and a long prong 61 are punched out of the material of the clip, the prong 66 being pressed into the material of the spindle 54 and only partly penetrating the same, while the prong 61 is forced entirely through said material and bent or peened over at 68 to clinch the clip to said spindle. The body portion 55 is also provided with a pair of oppositely directed outwardly obliquely extending prongs or barbs 69 and m for securing the strip material thereto. Said prongs are oppositely directed so as to firmly secure the strip material to the spindle whether said clip is used on the right or left hand end of the spindle. Said prongs in addition to being oppositely directed are also spaced from the longitudinal center line of the clip. This permits the one prong to act as a stop or margin bar, one on each end of the spindle, so that the carbon paper may be lined up squarely by means of prongs l0 and then speared through and secured by means of the prongs 69. This provides a simple and secure method of lining up and anchoring the carbon strip to the spindle which is very important to insure the uniform winding up of the same without spiralling.
What I claim is:
1. A spindle-for strip material, comprising a tubular body portion, and means on said spindle for securing the same to a member for rotation therewith, comprising a finger extending inwardly from the periphery of said body portion transversely to the axis thereof and having a notch therein.
2. A spindle for strip material having a tubular wall and an opening in the end thereof to receive a stem therein, and a finger extending radially into said opening from said wall for securing said spindle to said stem to rotate therewith, said finger having a keyway in the inner end thereof.
3. A spindle for strip material having an opening in the end thereof to receive a stem therein, and means for securing said spindle to said stem comprising a member detachably engaging said spindle and extending into said opening transversely from one side thereof, said member having legs spaced transversely of said spindle defining a slot therebetween.
4. A spindle for strip material having an opening in the end thereof, and a holding clip on said spindle having a leg portion extending lengthwise of said spindle for mounting the same thereon, and a portion extending crosswise of said spindle into said opening from said lengthwise extending leg portion having a keying formation thereon.
5. A spindle for strip material having an opening in the end thereof, and a holding clip on said spindle having leg portions extending lengthwise of said spindle engaging the inner and outer faces thereof, and a portion connecting said leg portions extending inwardly from said -lengthwise extending portions transversely of said opening having a keying formation thereon.
6. A spindle for strip material having an opening in the end thereof, and a holding clip on said spindle having leg portions extending lengthwise of said spindle engaging the inner and outer faces thereof, and a portion connecting said leg portions extending inwardly from said lengthwise extending portions tranversely of said opening having transversely aligned portions thereon spaced to define a substantially radial slot therein.
7. The combination with a stem having an end projection provided with a face having a rib thereon extending longitudinally of said stem, of a spindle having an end provided with a tubular wall having inwardly extending means thereon engaging said face and opposite sides of said rib.
8. The combination with a stem having an end projection provided with a face having a rib thereon extending longitudinally of said stem, of a spindle having an end provided with a tubular wall having means mounted thereon having portions extending inwardly from said wall engaging said face and opposite sides of said rib.
9. A spindle for strip material having an end provided with a tubular wall and means extending inwardly from said tubular wall crosswise of the opening therein for securing said spindle to a stem, comprising spaced members held in fixed 7 relation to each other i and .adeflning a slot ,in the inner end of said means extending-substantially radially of said wall.
.10, .A'spindle for strip material havingwan opening in theend thereof, and :aholding clip on said spindle having leg portions extending lengthwise of said spindle engaging the inner and outer faces thereof, and a portion connecting said leg portions extending inwardly from; said lengthwise extending portions transversely of said :opening for keying said spindle to a stem, said clip; having means thereon entering the material of said spindle for fixing said clip to said spindle;
11. The combination with a spindle having a tubular end, of a stem having a portion extending into said tubular end, said tubular end having inner and outer surfaces, and a clip having a pair of longitudinally extending fingers thereon engaging the inner and outer surfaces of said tubular end and a stern engaging portion :extending angularly from said fingers into said tubular. end, onerof said portions having a keyway therein and the other of said portions being formed to seat in said keyway.
12. The combination with a stem having an end projection provided with a keyway extending longitudinally of said stern, of a spindle having a tubular end receiving said projection, said tubular end having inner and outer surfaces, and a clip having a pair of longitudinally extending fingers thereon engaging the inner and outer surfaces of said tubular end, and a stem engaging portion extending into said tubular end and seated in said keyway.
13. A spindle for strip'material having a tubular end, and means for securing said spindle to a stem comprising a clip having a lengthwise extending portions engaging the inner and outer faces of said end and a doubled portion connecting said lengthwise extending portions and extending substantially radially into said end, said clip having means thereon entering the material of said spindle to fix the same thereto.
14. The combination with a spindle for :strip material having a tubular end, of a. stern having a portion extending into said tubular end, and means for securing said spindle to a stem comprising a clip having a lengthwise extending elongated portion engaging the outer face of said end and an inwardly substantially radially extending portion having a slot therein providing a 8 pair of legs, and. said .stemhaving :a iportionenter ing said tubular endhaving a longitudinal rib thereon engaging'insaid slot.
15. The combination with a spindle :for strip material. having a tubular end, of a stem having a portion extending into said tubular end, and means for securing said spindle to a stem comprising a clip having a lengthwise extending elongated portion engaging the outer face of said end and an inwardly substantially radially extending portion having a longitudinal slot therein providing a, pair of legs, and said stem havinga portion entering said-tubular end having; a longitudinal rib thereon engaging in .said slot, said clip having means entering thematerial of said spindle to fix said clip thereto, including 2, prong extending through the material of said spindle and bent .into clinching relation thereto.
16. A spindle for strip material having a tubular end and means for securing said spindle to a stern comprising a clip having a lengthwise extending elongated portion engaging the outer face of said end and an inwardly substantially radially extending portion having a longitudinal slot therein providing a pair of legs and said stem having a portion entering said .tubular end having a longitudinal rib thereon engaging in said slot, said clip having oppositely inclined. outwardly projecting pointed strip holding prongs thereon.
17. A spindle structure for strip material comprising a tubular body portion, end portions for rotatably mounting said spindle structure, stop means for aligning the edge of said strip material, and means for securing said alined edgeiin .position on thespindle structure.
