Be it known that I, CHAnLns AUGUSTUS KENwon'rHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to spindles or rollers, particularly such as are adapted to bear, rolled or stored thereon, material which it is desired to store in rolled form until needed for use and then to be unrolled from the spindle and if desired rerolled thereupon.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide such a roller which may be easily and conveniently employed in connection with apparatus in which the material stored upon the roller is .used, and which may be easily and quickly removed and replaced in a reversed position for rewinding the material thereon, as hereinafter more particularly explained.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as set forth in the claims hereof, certain embodiments of the same being shown in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.

A pair of approximately semicircular per-' forations 22 are provided in the end of the cap 21, separated by a cross-bar 23, in which 15 a perforation 241. In Figs. 1 and 2, a
' chuck 25 is shown at the left of the drawing,
in engagement with one of the caps 21. It will be observed that this chuck 25, being of forked construction, is adapted to engage with the semi-circular perforations 22 in the end of the cap 21'. It will of course be understood that this chuck is adapted to be journaled in the frame of an apparatus 'in connection with which the spindle is be ing used, and that the outer end is adapted to engage with a crank or other suitable means (not shown in the drawings) for ro- I also provide a removable bearing-mem' ber adaptedto' engage with the end of the spindle not engaged by the chuck. The form of bearing-member shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is shown in perspective inFig. (3. The same comprises a bearing-pin 2G and a disk 27, one end of the pin 26 being adapted to be inserted in the perforation 24C in one of the caps 21 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the other end to be inserted in a perforation or other suitablebearing in the apparatus with which the spindle is being used. The disk 27 is adapted to prevent the pin 26 from extending too far into either of the said perforations, and thereby becoming disengaged at its other end.
The operation of this embodiment of my invention will be readily seen from what has been said with regard to the construction of the same. It will be understood that devices embodying the invention are intended for use in pairs, each of which'will usually contain a portion. of the material stored thereon, which material is to be rotate. -My improved spindle therefore is placed in such a machine, the cap 21 on-one end being engaged by? the chuck,-and the pin ot' the removable bearing-member at the other end being inserted in the bearing. in the said machine. NV-hen it is desired to rewind the materialfrom the secondspindle-back on to the first spindle, both of the spindles maybe removed from the machine, the. removable-bearing members removed and'placeda- -on the opposite ends of the spi-ndles,: and. the. spindles reversed endtor end, thesecond spindle then occupying the position formerly occupied by thefirst spindle, the removable bearingmembers then engaging thecaps on the-ends ot' the spindles formerly engaged by the chuck, and the chuck engaging the caps.

The operation of this form: of my invention will be obvious from what has been'said with regard to lts construction andwith regard to the operation of the first-described form of the invention.
In Figs. 8 and 9, I'show a second modified form of removable bearing-member, used in connection with a shaft 40 having capsv 41 which may be engaged by. a chuck 45,, all of to the correspondingelements in the forms previously described. This form of bearmg member is shown in side view in Fig. 13 and in endviewiin l4. Thesame comprises a forked portion 46 and a bearingpin 47. The forked portion 46 is adapted to engageuwith a. capltl in the .same way as does the chuck, andtheFpinLeT is adapted to engage with a suitable bearing in the apparatus in connection with which the spindle is being used, in a manner similar to that already described in connection with other forms of the removable bearinganemher. It will be observed that a central perforation inqthe cap tl'. is unnecessary and .may be.-omitted, it this form of bearing member isused.
The operation of this IOI'HLELlSO will be obvious :t'rom what has been above said, and need not be particularly described.
In. Figs. llland. 11,1. show,- ,in connection with a shaft 50 and a chuck 55, a modified "fOl'lILO'f cap, shown in end view in Fig. 1:2.
This cap 51 is substantially similar to the cap shown inL-Iiigsi 1 to 5 and S to 9, but has the sides oflthe portion beyond'the end of the shaft cut away, so that the remaining portion.: of the, cap comprises a band portion .52 encircling'the endof the shaft 50, a
cross-bar 53, having widened end-portions adapted toprevent, lateral displacement of ,the chuck or of a forked hearing-member, ewhen thesa-me 18 in engagement with said crossbar 53. The manner of engagement will .beobvious from an inspection of the'drawings and-what hasbeen above said. A .removable 'bearing-member comprising thatshown in Figs. .8, .9, l3 and 14, is shown in FigsmIO and- 11, although it is obvious I that i the form of removable bearing-member Eshownin-Eig. 6 may be usedwith this form of cap, 'itthe cap is provided with acentr'al perforation in thecross-bar 58, similar to the perforation 2 1 shown in Fig. 5.

Ido not limit myself to the exact construction-which I have shown and described, as it is obvious that various further modifications might be made in the same without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
II-aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire tosecure by Letters. Patent is, as follows:
1. In a spin dle, .the combination with a shaft provided at each end with a member having. an openingadapted to be-engaged by a chuck; "of aremovable member adapted to engage with oneoit said first named members not so engaged by a-chuckand proa. forked portion-5.6, and a pin 57, similar to vided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used.
2. In a spindle, the combination with a shaft provided at each end with an eccentrically located socket adapted to be engaged by a chuck and with a centrally located socket; of a removable member adapted to engage with one of said centrally located sockets and provided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used.
3. In a spindle, the combination with a shaft provided at each end with a bar extending across the end of said shaft and adapted to be engaged by a forked chuck; of a member having a forked portion adapted to engage one ofsaid bars not so engaged by a chuck and provided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used.
4. In a spindle the combination with a shaft provided at each end with a member encircling the end of said shaft and having a bar, extending across the end of said shaft and adapted to be engaged by a forked chuck; of a member having a forked portion adapted to engage one of said bars not engaged by a chuck and provided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used. 7
5. In a spindle, the combination with a shaft provided at each end with a member adapted to be engaged by a chuck; of a member comprising a cap adapted to re ceive a portion of one of said first named members not so engaged by a chuck, and provided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used.
6. In a spindle, the combination with a shaft provided at eachend with a member adapted to be engaged by a chuck; of a member comprising a forked portion adapted to engage one of said first-named members not so engaged by a chuck and provided with a pin adapted to engage with a bearing in the apparatus with which said spindle is adapted to be used.
