SAFETY RAZOR Filed June 21. 1944 EF1-H9999 Mr am n 6 ,D ,P 5 MT M s D ff W am@ -WL.M2'ZZ5 Patented Dec. 28, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE y '2,457,590` *l 1 SAFETY RAZOR William L. Mills, Waco, Tex.
Application June 21, 1944, Serial No. 541,386
2 Claims. (Cl. 30--69) This invention relates to a safety razor.
It is particularly aimed to provide a novel construction which is provided with means enabling it to be accurately adjusted to the correct position for shaving, a construction wherein an adjustable guard roller and mounting means is employed, and further, a construction in which a novel handle is used to promote the adjustment of the parts to correct shaving position.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the improved safety razor;
Figure 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring specically to the drawings, a guard plate is employed at IIJ, having .the usual gu-ard teeth II along the lower edge thereof.
Coacting with the guard plate is a clamping plate I2 provided with a pair of lugs I3 integral therewith and adapted to occupy openings I4, for registering therewith, and located in the guard plate I0.
In addition, a screw-threaded stud extends rearwardly from the clamping plate through an opening I6 in the guard plate and in the rear of the latter, extends removably through a terminal I1 of a handle I8. A nut of any suitable shape is employed at I9, being threaded on the stud I5 and movable against the terminal I1 in order to rigidly fasten the parts in operative position.
A blade is employed at 20, having a cutting edge 2I at the proper position for coaction with the clamping plate and guard plate. Such blade may be of any desired shape but is preferably of a form enabling insertion or removal upon slight loosening of the nut I9. To this end, the upper edges of lthe blade 20 are provided with notches 22 which engage the lugs I3 and stud I5.
It will be noted that the handle I8' is of a unique form in order to provide a relatively large gripping portion as shown having a convex surface adjacent one end as at 23 and a downwardly extending surface 24 adjacent the free end. This construction enables the blade to be better gr-ipped and the razor held and operated at any desired angle and in the best position for cornfortable and satisfactory shaving.
The invention also providesv a roller 25 which serves as a guard by contacting the skin in advance of the cutting edge 2I, such roller extending the full length of the blade and being adjustable toward and away from such blade and transversely with respect to the cutting edge 2|. To this end, the guard roller 25 has trunnions 26 which are loosely journaled in plates 21.
The guard plate I0 has rearwardly extending wings 28 at each end thereof to which the side plates 21 are adjustably and removably disposed. Such side plates have open slots 29 in their upper ends through which fastening screws 30 are passed which are threaded in openings 3l in the wings 28. Such screws 30 also preferably pass through washers at 32.
It will be realized that through the adjustment of the screws 30, the side plates 21 may be moved to various positions to accurately adjust the position of the guard roll 25. Also, they enable the guide plates 21 and guard rolls 25 to be completely removed if the user desires.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a razor having a guard plate, a clamping plate, and a stud and lugs on the clamping plate occupying openings in the guard plate, a handle having a terminal through which the stud passes, fastening means on the stud engageable against the terminal, a guard roller, means mounting said guard roller in operative position to the cutting edge of the blade, comprising side plates in which the roller is journaled, and means rotatably and slidably securing the side plates to the guard plate.
2. A razor of the class described having a guard plate, a clamping plate to secure a razor blade against the guard plate, lugs on the clamping plate occupying openings in the guard plate, a screw stud passing from the clamping plate through an opening in the guard plate, a handle having a terminal through which the stud passes, fastening means on the stud engageable against the terminal, a guard roller, means mounting said guard roller in operative position to the cutting edge of the blade, comprising side plates A'in which the roller is journaled, means securing the side plates to the guard plate, comagainst which the side plates are disposed, said side plates each having a. slot, and one of said Number Name a Date v screws passing through each of the slots and 1,444,764 Rohde Feb. 6, 1923 l being threaded to one of said wings. n 1,712,086 Little May 7, 1929 WILLIAM L.
