To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, CHARLES T. RIDGELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My present invention relates to certain improvements in the class of razors known aS safety razors.
In the typical or conventional type of safety razor it is hard to shave with the cutting edge of. the razor in a fixed relation and at right angles to the handle, as in the common safety razor of hoe form.
It is an object of the invention to obviate this inconvenience by providing a blade holder which is rotatably and adjustably clamped to the handle, whereby the cutting edge may be disposed at an angle to the handle, thus permitting the razor to be used as an ordinary safety razor, as a razor of common type or as an intermediate type thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a blade holder or head which can be easily manipulated to allow the rapid insertion and removal of the blade and which is also arranged to afiord the highest degree of safety when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a head and handle which are detachable when the razor is not to be used in order that it may be easily packed; and to provide means by which the head and handle can be clamped to each other when connected and with the cutting edge of the blade in angular relation to the handle.
It is a further object of the invention to provide other improved details of structure whereby the handle and head may be connected and disconnected quickly and efliciently and adjusted with reference to each other, the said details of structure being illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the razor in condition for use; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the razor with the top clamping plate in open position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the line 4 4t of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail In the embodiment of the invention shown in the present drawings the head of my razor is indicated generally at 1. This head comprises a base or clamping plate 2 having along its longitudinal front edge a series of protecting teeth 3 and projecting lugs 4 upon its upper surface. The upper clamping plate 5 is pivoted to the rear edge of the lower clamping plate, as indicated at 6. The last-mentioned clamping plate has recesses 7 adapted to register with the lugs 4 on the lower clamping plate. It is to be understood that these Inns 4: can be of any suitable form, that is, they can beintegral with the lower plate or struck up therefrom and also the apertures and lugs can be reversed as to their location. The blade 8 is shown in Fig. 2 as lying upon its base, the blade having recesses 9 at each end registering with the lugs 4. It should be noticed that the protecting teeth 3 extend laterally beyond the ends of the cutting edge of the blade, thus providing a razor which prevents the corners of the cutting edge from cutting the user. The razor blade is securely clamped between the said clamping plates through the instrumentality of a latch 10 pivoted at 11 to the upper surface of the upper clamping plate. The latch has a lower portion 12 extending at right angles to the upper portion thereof and adapted to engage the under side of the lower clamping plate. It will be seen that when the said latch is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 the blade will be securely clamped between its clamping plates. As shown in Fig. 5 the base or lower clamping plate comprises a bevel aperture 13 with a slot 14 leading therefrom to the rear edge of the said base plate. By this arrangement the handle can be connected to and disconnected from the head as described hereinafter.
The handle 15 has a neck 16 extending at an angle thereto and curving upwardly, the said neck 16 having an enlarged cylindrical screw-threaded portion, as shown at 17. An elongated, cylindrical, knurled nut 18 is mounted upon the screw-threaded portion 17 and is adapted to move longitudinally thereof. '1 to 5 is to be used the reduced portion 19 is passed through the slot 14; and the head 20 is placed in the aperture 13. The clamping plates with the blade between them is then securely clamped together and it will be seen that the head 20 is thereby securely held in its seat in the aperture 13. The nut 18 is then tightened against the lower face of the lower clamping plate. When it is desired to change the angle of the cutting edge with reference to the handle all that is necessary is to loosen the nut 18, rotate the head to the desired position and then tighten the nut again. The operation is quickly performed and the adjustment is positive. There is no danger of the blade slipping out during the operation as the latch 10 securely holds the blade clamped. It will be seen that the attaching device, comprising the parts 17, 18, 19 and 20, when attached to the head is substantially at right angles thereto, while the handle 15 is at an angle other than a right angle to the said head. This arrangement insures an efiicient locking of the nut 18 against the base and allows the rotation of the head in its own plane so that the cutting edge of the blade can be adjusted to a position either atright angles, parallel to or diagonal of the axis of the handle 15.
It will be noticed that the blade can be removed without adjustment of the nut 18 as the blade is held in position by a separate clamping device 10. On the other hand the handle can be rotated without disturbing the position of the blade'or its clamping device 10.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention and a modification thereof it will be understood that these have been chosen for the purposes. of illustration only, and that I do not desire to be limited'to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a razor, a pair of clamping plates pivoted together, the lower of said clamping plates being provided with a slot extending inwardly from one edge thereof, a handle provided with a lug having an enlarged head adapted to removably and rotatably engage said slot, the enlarged head lying entirely below the upper surface of said lower plate, means to adjustably clamp said handle and lower plate together, and a latch to clamp said plates together with a blade therebetween.
In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates, a handle, the lower of said plates and said handle having cooperating means whereby they may be rotatably fastened together, said means comprisin a device movable longitudinally ofsaid andle to clamp the parts together against rotation, the portion of the cooperating means on said handle lying entirely below the upper surface of the lower plate, and a latch to clamp said plates together. 3. In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates, a handle, the lower of said clamping plates and said handle being provided with a cooperating slot and lug and means to clamp the parts together, said lug lying entirely below the upper surface of the lower plate, and separate means to clamp the plates together with a blade therebetween.

5. In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates, the lower plate being provided with a slot extending from one edge inwardly and enlarged and beveled at its inner end, a handle provided with a screwthreaded portion and with a lug having an enlarged head, said handle being adapted to be attached to said lower plate by inserting the lug in the slot, a nut on said threaded portion to clamp said handle to the lower plate with the enlarged head seated within the enlarged and beveled portion of said slot, and separate means to clamp the plates together with a blade therebetween and entirely above the handle and its clamping devices.
6. In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates, the lower plate being provided with a slot extending from one edge inwardly and enlarged and beveled at its in ner end, a handle provided with a lug having an enlarged head, said lug with its enlarged head being rotatably and removably seated within the enlarged portion of said slot, means on said handle for adjustably clamping said handle against rotation and displacement, the top of said lug lying entirely below the upper surface of said lower plate, and means to clamp the plates together with a blade 'therebetween.
7. In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates with a blade therebetween, a handle, the lower of said plates and said handle having cooperating means whereby they may be rotatably clamped together, said means comprising a device movable longitudinally of said handle to adj ustably clamp the same to the lower plate only, whereby the plate may be removed without adjusting the handle, and a latch to clamp the plates together with a blade therebetween, whereby the handle may be adjustably rotated without affecting the blade.
8. In a razor, a head comprising a pair of clamping plates with a blade therebetween, the lower of said clamping plates being provided with a slot, a handle provided with a lug adapted to engage said slot, means to clamp said handle to said lower plate only, whereby the blade mag be removed without adjustment of said andle, and separate means for clamping the blade between said plates, whereby the handle may be adjusted Without aifecting the blade.
