GARBAGE CAN COVER Filed Oct. 8, 1945 Patented` Aug. 24, 1948 UNITED GARBAGE CAN COVER Nolan L. Johnson and .l' ames DAndrea, Piqua, Ohio Application October 8, 1945, Serial No. 620,856
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a cover for a garbage can or similar receptacle.
An object of this invention is to provide a cylindrical cover which is adapted to enclose the body or side of a garbage can and which can be readily applied or removed.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cover of this kind which is formed of a pair of semi-cylindrical members which are hingedly connected together at one edge thereof and which can be latched in encompassing position so as to snugly engage about the exterior of a garbage can, the cover being releasably latched about the can so that it can be easily removed when the can is being emptied.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved latching means for a cover of this kind.
With the foregoing objects in view, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereing are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modlcations may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation of a can constructed according to an embodiment of this invention mounted on a garbage can;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates generally a cylindrical can or receptacle which has mounted in the lower end thereof a, bottom II formed with a -down-turned flange I2 secured to the inner side of the side wall by fastening means I3 or the like The receptacle or can I0 as herein shown is formed with the body thereof corrugated as indicated at I4 and at the upper portion of the body I4, the receptacle is of cylindrical configuration as shown at I5. The corrugations I4 terminate at a point upwardly from the bottom wall I I and a cylindrical lower portion I6 extends from the lower ends of the corrugations I4.
A cover generally designated as I1 encompasses the side wall of the receptacle I0 and includes a pair of semi-circular members I8 and I9. The two members I8 and I9 are of like construction and each includes a cylindrical body 20 which is formed at its upper end with a smaller diameter cylindrical upper portion 2I which is adapted to snugly engage about the upper portion of 6 the receptacle I0. The lower end of the body 2l! is also formed with a reduced diameter lower portion 22 which is adapted to engage about the cylindrical portion I E of the receptacle I0. The two semi-circular members I8 and I9 are hingedly secured together by hinged means 23 and in the present instance there are two hinged members 23 which are secured in any suitable manner to the adjacent edges of the two members i8 and I9.
The. opposite vertical edges of the two cover members I8 and I9 are releasably latched together by means of a spring press latching structure including a latching bolt I0 hingedly secured as at 2I with the inner side of the cover member i9. The latching bolt 30 is constantly urged to latching position by means of a spring 26. The cover member I8 has secured to the inner side thereof a keeper 2-I with which the bill of the bolt 3U is a-dapted to engage. A releasing pin 23 is independently carried by the cover member I8, being formed with an outer head 24 and with an inner head 25. The innerhead 25 is adapted to engage the end of the bill of the bolt when the latter is in latching position at which time the releasing pin 23 will be forced outwardly by the spring 25 pressing on the bolt 30.
When it is desired to open the cover, the pin 24 is pushed inwardly thereby rocking the bolt 30 inwardly to released position.
With a construction as hereinbefore described, the cover may be mounted on any standard size receptacle and when the receptacle becomes worn or leaky by reason of the rusting of the bottom, the cover may be removed and applied to a new receptacle. This receptacle cover may be coated with protecting paint, enamel or the like and may be of any desired color or combination of colors so as to provide a pleasing appearance.
What we claim is:
A receptacle, a cover therefor comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical members, means hingedly securing said members together, a spring-pressed latch member carried by the inner side of one member, a keeper carried by the inner side of the other member, and a latch releasing member loosely carried by said other member, each member having each end inwardly offset to provide peripheral portions adapted to snugly engage the :exterior of the receptacle adjacent the ends of the latter.
