PATENT OFFICE FERDINAND L. JENSEN, F KILDARE, NEW YORK FASTENER Application filed November 22, 1929. Serial No. 409,023.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in fasteners and is particularly adapted for fastening chain ends together, although the same may be employed for diverse other purposes;
The principal object of this invention is to provide a fastener which will not be liable to become unfastened accidentally, which because of its durable construction cannot be susceptible to the development of ready defects.
These and other important objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent to the reader as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the fastener in its entirety.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view through the fastener.
Figure 3 represents a transverse sectional view of the fastener.
Figure 4; represents a perspective view of the bail.
Figure 5 represents a top plan view of the bolt plate.
Figure 5 represents perspective views of the plate sections.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it will be seen that this novel fastener comprises a pair of plate sections 5 and 6. These plate sections are provided with suitable openings for receiving securing members whereby chain ends may be secured thereto.
The plate section 6 has an elongated barrel 7 disposed thereon and closed at its end 8. The opposite end of the barrel 7 is open and a slot 9 extends inwardly from this open end of the barrel. A loop 10 is secured to the plate 6 and in a position registering with the open end of the barrel 7, but spaced therefrom, as in the manner clearly shown in Figure 5, this loop being complementary to the loop 10 on the plate 5.
A bolt 11 is slidable within the barrel 7 and has a head 12 at one end for relatively snug disposition within the barrel, the opposite end of the bolt being undercut in the manner shown in Figure 2. A compressible spring 13 is interposed between the closed end of the barrel and the inner end of the bolt for maintaining the bolt in the projected position shown in Figure 2.
A finger-grip 14E protrudes upwardly from the bolt and through the slot 9. A pair of cars 1515 are secured to the plate section 5 for receiving the trunnions 16 of the U- shaped bail 17 which is connectible with the plate section 6 by disposing its bight portion within the space between the loop 10 and the open end of the barrel 7 as in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2. By permitting the bolt 11 to project over the bight portion of the hail, the bail will be prevented from becoming displaced.
While the foregoing description sets forth the invention in definite terms, it is to be understood that changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A fastener of the character described comprising a pair of plate sections, a loop on each of the said sections for registry with each other, a barrel on one of the sections having an open end in spaced relation to the corresponding loop, a bolt slidable in the barrel and through the loop on one plate section and into the loop on the other plate section, and a bail swingably mounted on the other section and adapted to have its bight port-ion engage under the bolt in the space between the loop and open end of the barrel on said one sect-ion when the bolt is in projected position.
2. A fastener of the character described comprising a pair of plate sections, a loop on each of the said sections for registry with each other, a barrel on one of the sections having an open end in spaced relation to the corresponding loop, a bolt slida-ble in the barrel and through the loop on one plate section and into the loop on the other plate section, a bail swingably mounted on the other section and adapted to have its bight portion engage under the bolt in the space between the loop and open end 01 the barrel on said one section when the bolt is in projected position, said bolt being provided with an undercut pocket to receive the night portion of the bail when the bolt is in projected position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FERDINAND L. JENSEN.
