Description
June 1943- M. J. GLOTFELTY I 2,443,135
CAM SHAFT POSITIONING DEVICE Filed NOV. 20, 1946 INVENTOR. M6507? c/t G/ 277C622? ATTD RN EYS Patented June 8, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CAMSHAFT POSITIONING DEVICE Mason 3. Glotfelty, Oakland, Md. Application November 20, 1946, Serial No. 711,118
1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to an improved cam shaft positioning device and more particularly to an indicator adapted to be used in conjunction with the cam shaft of an automobile engine so that when in position the lever of the indicator may be moved to a selected number on the dial to move the cam shaft to such position as to permit the grinding and adjustment of the valve corresponding to the number selected.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rear end of the shaft engageable with the engine cam shaft.
Referring now to the drawings, I have illustrated the device of my invention comprising a drum cover 2 having a rear wall 4 formed with a journal collar 6 for the ring 8 of shaft Ill. The flange l2 of the cover is secured by bolts M to the cover I6 of the conventional timing gear [8 on its shaft 20.
The shaft outwardly extends through the dial plate 22 anchored by bracket 24 and bolt 26 to the cover 2. A hand 28 extends radially of the center of the shaft and is movable over the dial plate to a selected number indicating a valve cam position on the shaft 20.
The shaft l has a key 30 engageable in a groove 32 of the shaft 20 so that movement of the hand to a selected group of valve numbers will, by rotating the shaft 20, position those cams for grinding or adjustment of the valves operated thereby. The spring 34 about the shaft 10 is secured by washer 36 urging the keyed end of the shaft into the groove 32.
In the use of the device of my invention it will be apparent that considerable time and labor will be saved resulting in more efficient operations and better repair work.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cam shaft position indicating device comprising a drum cover, and a rear wall on said cover adapted for mounting adjacent the shaft end, a journal collar formed in the rear wall centrally thereof a shaft in the cover a ring on the shaft positioned in said collar, said ring on the outer face thereof having a key co-acting with the said cam shaft end, a hand on the shaft, a dial plate on the cover carrying cam indicating indicia whereby movement of the hand by rotating the cam shaft to a selected position with relation to the dial will locate the shaft and cam shaft, a coil spring positioned between the dial and the ring on the shaft urging the shafts into engagement, a retaining washer between the spring and the shaft ring and a flange on said cover to receive means for securely mounting the cover adjacent the shaft end.
