To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER SMITH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timer- Supportin Brackets, of which the following is a spec' cation.
The present invention relates to improvements in internalcombustion' engines, and has particular reference to a supporting element, for carrying a timer and distributor,
for use in connection with the engine.
An important object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character,.which is adapted to be applied to a Ford automobile, upon the removal of the ordinary Ford commutator, without necessitating the use of additional bolts on the like, or even unscrewing a single bolt of the engine.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in constructiori, strong, formed of few and simple parts, and durable.
A further object of the invention isto provide a device of the above mentioned character, having a casing engagin the flange of the crank case, which hols the ordinary Ford timer, and an ear or extension having an opening to fit over and receive the head of the bolt which supports the fan bracket.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
The present application is a continuation in part of myv copending application for combined timer and distributor, filed November 5, 1921, Serial No. 513,124.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

My improved support for the combined timer and distributor embodies a lower casing 19, which is approximately cup-shaped, and is tager'ed, decreasing in diameter outwardly. hisv casing is of the general shape of the Ford commutator casing, and .has
a circular flange 20, .at its inner end, adapted for insertion within the flange 21, formed upon the crank case. While the drawings show the flange 20 as fitting within the flange 21, I also contemplate having the flange 20 arranged outwardly of the flange 21, the idea being that the flanges interfit or interlock. The casing 19 is held in posi-' tion by the usual leaf spring 22 of the Ford engine, which spring is employed upon the Ford engine for holding the Ford commutator casing in place. Extending upwardly from the casing 19 and preferably integral therewith is a sleeve 23, provided with a lateral extension or plate 24, having an opening 25 therein. It'is preferred that the opening 25 be sufliciently large to receive the head of the fan bracket supporting bolt 17 so that the head of the bolt is arranged bodily within the opening 25. The advantage of this construction is that the device may be placed upon the Ford automobile, by the removal of the ordinary commutatorcasing, and securely held in place by means of the spring 22 and bolt 17 without the use of additional bolts, or disturbing a single. bolt upon the-engine. The spring 22 holds the casing 19 in locked engagement with the flange 21 of the crank case, and the head of the bolt 17 engaging sleeve 23, and carryinga depending sleeve 26, pivoted within the collar 27, at the top of the sleeve 23. The sleeve 26 has an annular groove 28, receiving the reduced end of a screw 29.. The sleeve 26 is therefore free to turn but is held against longitudinal dis lacement'.

The numeral 34 designates a beveled gear, operating within the casing 19, and rigidly seccllired to the larger iani of thg5shaft 510, an en a a eve e gear r1g1 y mounte the 'camshaft 36. of the enne. a A grease cup 37 is carried by the collar 27 and is adapted to feed ease between the sleeve 26 and the collar 2 and also to feed the ease through the ports 38, between the sha 30 and the bore of the sleeve 26.

80 and the casing 25 is turned in either direction to advance or retard the spark, as may be desired.
The casing 25' is provided with a cap or cover 37 formed of insulating material, and suitably secured thereto.-
mechanism is mounted in thecasing 25 an its cap 37'. The construction .of this mechanism is not claimed per se in this application, and neednot be given in detail. The mechanism includes a timing device 38', operated by the upper end of the shaft 30, and a distributing device 39'.. The timing device of course controls the operation of the/primary circuit, including the primary coil, while the distributor controls the operation of the secondary circuit, including the secondary coil. The secondary circuit is connected with the spark plugs of the engine, as is well known. The complete construction of the timing and distributing mechanism is shown in my copending'application for combined timer and distributor, filed November 5, 1921, Serial. No. 513,124.
The invention is not restricted however to the use of this particular type of combined timer and distr1 utor, as any other form of casing and forcing the casing The combined timing and distributin suitable timer and distributor may be em-- to be taken as a preferred example. of the same, and that. various changes in the shape,

Having thus described my invention, I claim; j 1. In a device'of the character described, the combination with the' crank case of a Ford automobile havin a flange at the end thereof near the fan racket, of a casing havin with t e flange, an upstanding sleeve carried by the casin 'and provided upon one side with a latera extension having anopening, sald extension being so located and the openng therein of such a size that such opening is adapted to bodily receive the head of the fan bracket supporting bolt, a leaf spring one end thereof adaptedto interfit connected with the crank case upon the other side of the sleeve and en agmg said award the crank case, a second casing secured to the upper end of the sleeve and adapted to receive circuit closing means, and driving means for the circuit closing means includin gears in the first named casing and a sha extending longitudinally through said sleeve.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with the crank case of a Ford automobile havin a flange at the end I thereof near the fan racket, of a casing having one end thereof adapted to interfit with the flange, an upstanding member carried by the casing. and provided upon one side with the lateral extension, said lateral extension being so located that it is adapted to engage with the fan bracket su'pportin bolt, a leaf 'sprin connected with the era case upon the ot er side of the upstanding member and engagin the casingand forcing the same toward t e crank case, a second casing secured to the u per portion of the upstanding member, an adapted to receive circuit closing means, and driving means for the circuit closing means including gears in-the first named casing and a'shaft extending longitudinally of the upstanding member.
