To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'FLORENZ KEISER, of Pottstown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axle-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Themain object of my invention is to prevent the displacement of the locking-plate of an axle-box when the said box is accidentally.
raised, further objects being to prevent waste of oil and to insure a firm bearing for the cover of the box at both the top and the bottom, thereby removing the strain from the pivot pin, and protect the lid. These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an axlebox with myimprovements; Fig. 2, a front view of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 12, Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5, detached views of parts of the box; and Fig. 6, a transverse section on the line 3 4, Fig. 1.
The casing A of the box is of the usual form, and has at the back the opening a for the axle, and at the front an opening closed by a lid or cover, B, which is hinged to the box by means of a pivot pin, b, passing through lugs d d on the cover and a lug, cl, on the box.
D is the usual plate which locksin position the. bearing-block E, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) said plate D bearing against the top of the box, and being retained in position longitudinally, when the boxis in its proper position, partly by the rear end of said box and partly by a shoulder, 6, near the front end of the same. This is the usual construction ,which is adopted for the purpose of allowing the bearing-block to be removed, the mode of procedure in such case being to lift the box A until the front end of the plate D is free from the controhof the shoulder c, said plate being then withdrawn through the opening in the front of the box, so as to permit the block E to be raised until it is clear of the flange on the endot' the journal and is free to be removed in the same manner as the plate. Occasionally, however, the box is accidentally lifted or tilted to such an extent as to free the plate D from the control of the shoulder e, and said plate is in such cases liable to slip forward out of position, thereby exerting an uneven pressure on the block E, and causing undue wear and heating of the block and journal.
In order to prevent such accidental displacement of the plate D, I use a bolt, f, which extends vertically through the top of the box and is in line with the shoulder 0, so that the downwardly-projecting portion of the bolt forms in effect a continuation of said shoulder and prevents longitudinal displacement of the plate D when the box is elevated so as to free the plate from the control of the shoulder. (See Fig. 4.) The plate can readily be removed when desired, however, upon withdrawing the bolt f. The upper end of the bolt has a head, g, and the portion t of the bolt adjacent to the head is threaded, so that the bolt may be more securely attached to the box than it it were plain throughout. To avoid the trouble and expense of forming a threaded opening in the box for the reception of this threaded portion t of the bolt, however, I simply form a socket, m, on the top of the box, this socket being con structed for the reception of a nut, a, which is adapted to protect the lid B and the threaded portion of the bolt.
The lid or cover B of the box has at its lower end a spring-bolt, s, which engages with a shoulder on the box, the bolt being selfoperating on the closing of the door, and being retracted by means of a projecting pin, t, when it is desired to open the door.
In order to ren1ove all strain from the pivotpin 1), the upper and lower. edges to of the door, when the latter is closed, fit snugly to seats 00 on the box, so that the door is firmly retained in position vertically and is inclosed by the casing.
The packing material is kept within proper limits by an internal shelf, h, on the cover B, and by a flange, j, forming part of a plate, G, and having at its upper edge a toothed or serrated rib, as in my patent of June 26, 1877.
The toothed or serrated rib may, if desired, be formed directly on the edge of the flangey of the box, as shown by dotted lines in Fig.1, in which case the plate G may be dispensed with; or the toothed rib may be formed on the fixed partition, which, in ordinary axle-boxes, occupies the position of the flange j.
The flange j of the plate G is of such awidth, compared with the interior of the box, that between each edge of said flange and the adjacent side of the box intervenes a space, as shown in Fig. 6, through which any oil that may be splashed over the top of the flange can find its way back to the front end of the box.
Where a permanent partition is used in place of the flanged plate openings may be made at the bottom of the same, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6.
I am aware that a vertical bolt has been used in place of the shoulder a in an axle-box; but this is different from my invention, in which the bolt is merely supplementary to the shoulder, the latter affording the usual extended bearing for resisting the end-thrust of the plate D when the car is running. Without there fore claiming, broadly, a bolt forming a bearin g for the end of the locking-plate,
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the box A, having an internal shoulder, c, with the locking-plate D and a detachable pin or bolt, f, adapted to an opening in the top of the box, and forming a vertical continuation of the shoulder c, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the box A, having a socket, 122, formed thereon, the bolt f, having a threaded portion, 6, and the nut n, fitted to the socket and adapted to said threaded portion of the bolt, as specified.
