UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Rosana: coALE, 01 ansas; oI'I Y, ansas.
cAn-JoUImAL-Box LID;
To all wk-m twang "concern Be it known that I, ROBERT COALE,:. a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in. the county of-Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in CarrJournal Box Lids, of which the following is a speci j fication.
This invention relates to railway rolling stock and more particularly to an improved lid for the boxes for car journals, and the primary object of the inventionis the provlsion of a hinged lid for the journal boxes,
which lid is provided .with an auxiliary compartment formed upon the face of the same, and having a lid hingedly connected thereto, by means of which water may be poured into the journal box for the cooling of the axle, without raising or opening the lid proper of the box. This feature provides a means for cooling the axle, without wasting the lubricating oil which is contained Within the journal box, andprovides for the efficient cooling of the journal in that the water poured into the boxthrough the auxiliary door will cool the journal and upon evaporation of the same the. lubricating oil will. be left free within the box for lubricating the rotation of the axle.
With the foregoing andother objects in View, this invention consists in such novel features ofconstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and. claimed.
. In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters designate like or corresponding partsthroughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view showing the improved journal box lid applied to a journal box, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved journal box lid, Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 is a rear view, showing a part of the lid broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom portlon of the journal box, which has the lid 2 hingedly connected thereto. The lid2has its upper marginal edge rolled upon itself or curved to form a hinged connection with the journal box 1. The lid 2 has an opening formed therein, which opening communicates with the upper edge of the lid and extends downwardly substantially one third Specification of IJettersPate nti Application filedJune 8,1914. ..S eria1No.843 ,874, j
Patented Oct. 6,1914.
of the'length of thelid. Theopening 5 has a box57 encompassing the same,which box issecurely attached totheouter face of the cover .or lid.2,,and projects outwardly therefrom, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The upper end 8 of the box 7 extends outwardly and slightly up:
wardly from the curved marginal edge of the cover or lid, and extends downwardly and outwardly as is shown at 9, from the point 10 thereof. A door or :lid is hingedly connected to the lower marginal edge of the section 9 of the upper end of the box 7, which lid extends downwardly and abuts the outer marginal edge of the base 12. of
the box. The lid 11 is hingedly connected to the box. as at 14, so that access may be gained to the interior of the journal box 1, for pouring water or the like therein, for cooling the axle and thebrasses, which are positioned within the journal box when it is desired to do so, without causing :the waste of the lubricating oil which is in the journal box, while itprovides means whereby convenient access may be gained to the journal box without lifting the entire lid 2. A springclasp 15 is secured to the base 12 of the box 7 and engages the outersurface of the door 11,for preventing the accidental dislodgment or opening of the door.
A flat spring 16 is riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face of the lid 2, and it extends upwardly therefrom, having its upper terminal end in binding engagement with the hinge formed onthe journal box 1,.
connected to said journal box and provided with an openingformed near the upper marginal edge thereof, a box formed about said opening and rojecting transversely of said lid upon the orward or outward side thereof, a lid hingedly connected to the upper end of said box, and a spring clip seoure'dto the lower end of said box and engaging the outer surface of said lid for preventing the accidental opening thereof. b
2., The combination with a ournal box of the ordinary construction, of a lid hingedly connected to said journal box and provided with an opening formed near the upper marginal edge thereof, a box formed about said opening and projecting transversely of said lid upon the forward or outward side thereof, a lid hingedly connected to the upper end of said box, a spring clip secured to the lower, end of said box and engaging the outer surface of saidlid for preventing the 15 accidental opening thereof, a fiat spring secured to the inner surface of said first named and extending upwardly through the centralportion of said opening. I p
In testimony whereof I aflix my presence of two witnesses.
