Definitions

  • Our invention consists in solid drop or sporting shot made from molten iron as a new article of manufacture, and by the machine and process specifically set forth and described in an application for a patent filed by us in the 20 United StatesPatent Office, April 7, 1879.
  • This new article of solid drop or sporting shot made from molten iron has many advantages over the common shot made of lead, or lead and its alloys, by being much harder, sus- 2 ceptible of a much better and smoother finish on their surfaces, and of less specific gravity; hence it follows that the shot will not be indented by rough handling, making their surfaces rough and uneven, will pass through the 0 air with less friction and resistance, will require less charge of powder to give them equal velocity, and when they strike the object aimed atuthe penetration will be much greater, as there will be no flattening of the shot to impede their progress, and shot so made from iron will not injure the flesh of the game killed by them or endanger thelives ofthe persons who eat the game killed by shot made from iron, as is often the case when shot are made from lead mixed with arsenic to harden them; and, further, shot made from molten iron are produced at much less expense than shot made from lead, or lead and other metals or alloys mixed therewith; hence the iron shot will be cheaper to thesport

Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ILLINOIS.
DROP-SHOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,134, dated December 28, 1880.
Application filed October 7, 1880. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HANS J. WIN'IHER- LIoH, a citizen of the United States, and WAL- DEMAR 'l. WINTHERLIOH, a subject of the 5 King of Denmark, both residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop or Sporting Shot from Molten Iron, as an article of manufacture; and 1o we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
Our invention consists in solid drop or sporting shot made from molten iron as a new article of manufacture, and by the machine and process specifically set forth and described in an application for a patent filed by us in the 20 United StatesPatent Office, April 7, 1879.
This new article of solid drop or sporting shot made from molten iron has many advantages over the common shot made of lead, or lead and its alloys, by being much harder, sus- 2 ceptible of a much better and smoother finish on their surfaces, and of less specific gravity; hence it follows that the shot will not be indented by rough handling, making their surfaces rough and uneven, will pass through the 0 air with less friction and resistance, will require less charge of powder to give them equal velocity, and when they strike the object aimed atuthe penetration will be much greater, as there will be no flattening of the shot to impede their progress, and shot so made from iron will not injure the flesh of the game killed by them or endanger thelives ofthe persons who eat the game killed by shot made from iron, as is often the case when shot are made from lead mixed with arsenic to harden them; and, further, shot made from molten iron are produced at much less expense than shot made from lead, or lead and other metals or alloys mixed therewith; hence the iron shot will be cheaper to thesportsman.
\Ve are aware that iron bullets, canister and grape shot have been made by casting them'from molten iron in molds, and we do not claim such cast shot, as shot so made are a different article from ours; but,
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
As a new article of manufacture, solid iron drop or sporting shot, as described.
