Thisinvention relates to a fire extinguishing device or fire extinguishing pump of the stirrup type. Such devices or pumps are provided as a safety measure in places where there may be a fire and form a quick and convenientmeans for extinguishing said fire. Said devices have greater importance now in places that might be subject to air raids.
It is an object of this invention to provide a very simple and efficient structure of stirrup pump adapted to be placed in any open-topped receptacle containing water.
It is a further object of the invention to provide, a stirrup pump comprising a liquid-containing casing having a discharge means at its upper end, a pump cylinder secured tosaid casing and a bracket secured to said casing holding a stirrup support and also a guide means for the plunger rod of said pump.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which- Fig. lis a view partly in side elevation of said device, some parts being broken awayand others i shown in vertical section;

Referring to the drawings a device or pump is illustrated comprising a'casing [0. While this casing might be variously formed,
in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it fire extinguishing monly used as shown in Fig. 8. A tube H is disposed in casing I0, the same extending tosubstantially the bottom of said casing and having an open lower end. Said lower end is shown as extending in a diagonal plane. tends upward. and through the projection H10 and to a point some distance thereabove. Said tube is provided at its upper end with an enlarged semi-spherical head Ila adapted to be embraced and form a connection for an elastic hose I2 which will be of considerable smaller diameter than the ordinary garden hose. A pump cylinder I3 is provided and extends along one side of easing I0 substantially parallel thereto and will be secured to said casing in some suitable, manner as by soldering or welding. Pump cylinder I3 has an open lower end across which extends a screen M. A bottom. wall or diaphragm member l5 extends across pump cylinder l3 some distance above screen HI and is shown as having a cylindrical flange I50 which will be secured to cylinder l3 in any suitable manner as by soldering or welding.
l5 has a central opening IEbtherethrough about which projects downwardly an annular flange I50. The top portion of member l5 about opening I5b forms a valve seat and a valve I1 is provided comprising an annular washer-like portion Ha of rubber. leathervor similar material and a member Nb of circular form having a depressed central portion extending. into the central opening of portion I'la.f A plurality of strips or prongs I8 are secured to the bottom of the depressed portion of member Ill) and project downwardly through opening l5b. As shown, these members l8 are connected at their upper circumference whichis smaller in diameter than the diameter of opening [51). Casing lfl and pump cylinder l3 have a communicating opening in their adjacent walls in which is disposed a thimble IS. The side of said thimble l9 in casing It) forms a valve seat and a valve 29 is Tube H ex- Member already described. A plunger rod 22 is provided for pump cylinder l3, the same being in the form of a tube and said tube has secured in its lower end a plug 23. A cup-like member 24 has a cylindrical hub embracing and secured to rod 22, the same also having an outer cylindrical flange 24a. Another cup-like member 25 is provided having a central cylindrical hub also embracing the rod 22. Member 25 has an outer annular cylindrical flange 25a, and is also provided with an end portion 251). A headed screw 26 extends through end-portion 25b and'into the plug 23 thus holding member 25 in place. A cup washer 28 of leather or similar material extends around and across the end of cup member 24 and a similar washer 29 extends around cup member 25. Said washers 28 and 29 are oppositely disposed and their annular or cylindrical portions engage the wall of cylinder I3.
' Said washers with their adjacent parts thus form a plunger for rod 22. Rod 22 extends upwardly and through a guide member 3|] secured in a bracket 3! to be later described. A washer 32 having a cylindrical hub 32a is secured to rod 22 in any suitable'manner as by a screw 33 and formsastop for the downward movement of rod 22. A similar washer 32 is secured to rod 22 some distance below the first mentioned washer 32 and forms a stop for rod 22 in its up-' ward movement. It will be noted that washers 32 have their hub portions oppositely disposed. Rod '22 at its upper end extends through and is secured to a tube 21 forming a handle for said rod- 22. It will be noted that the upper end of tube 22' is open at the top of handle or tube 21. A stirrup member or support 34 is provided, the same having a horizontally extending lower portion 34d and an offset upwardly extending standard 34b. Bracket-3| is in the form of a pair of straps which extend and embrace cylinder III at one end, the samehaving interlocking connected portions 3|a' at one side of .said cylinder; The straps designated 3|b'thus project 3 at the opposite side of casing l0. Member is held between straps 3H) and said straps are bent to provide hook-like portions 3| 0 at their ends between which the standard 34b extends. It will be noted that standard 34b is somewhat curved in transverse cross section as shown in Fig. 3. A screw 35 extends through and between straps 3") having one end threaded in one of said straps and has oppositely extending wings at one end to form a thumb screw. A strap 36 is provided which extends between straps 31b, the same being formed of some flexible material such as closely woven fabric. Said strap has an eyelet or grommet 31 secured therein through which screw 35 extends. Strap 36 is in practice provided with a buckle and the usual perfov j w rated end cooperating therewith, said buckle not being shown. e
A nozzle member is provided comprising a body 38 having a cup-like portion at oneend internally threaded so as to be similar to the female connection on an ordinary garden hose and thus to be connected to the male connection 39 on such a hose '8. A tube 4| extends through and is secured in member 38, the same projecting somewhat beyond member 38 and being provided with an enlarged semi-spherical end 4 la to which 7 the "smaller hose l2 maybe connected as shown in Fig. 1. Tube 4| extends some distance from member 38 and has secured thereto and surrounding the same adjacent its end a cup-like member 4|b having its openend and annular.
rim projecting outwardly. A strip 42 is secured at one end to the side of tube 4| by a screw 43,
the same extendnig alongside of'said tube and V diverging therefrom for thegreater portion of its length. Strip 42 is bent toward said tube at its upper end and passes through a slot 4|c' formed in the end of cup member4lb- The upper end of strip 42 is somewhat tapered or pointed as shown in Fig." 6 andthe extreme end of said tapered portionis given a slight bend 42a. The tube 4| is shown as contracted somewhat at its discharge end and the end portion of strip l 42 normally is disposed at one side of the discharge opening in the end of said tube.
In operation, the device will be equipped with, V
the desired hose which, as stated, may be either a small rubber hose such as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be a regular garden hose such as shown as 8 in Figs. 2 and 6. The device so equipped with the hose, which hose will be connected to.
can be held in place by the operator's foot.
Plunger rod 22 will be reciprocated and the water in receptacle 40 will be drawn into the pump cylinder I3 as the plunger and rod 22 move upwardly. At this time valve I! will lift and-its upward motion will ,be stopped b the portions l8a engaging member l5. As the plunger and rod 22 move upwardly valve 20 will be heldin closed position. Pump cylinder I3 thus fills substantially with liquid and when rod 22 is moved downwardly this liquid is pressed downward by the plunger. The pressure of the water thus closes valve l1 andgvalve 20 is opened. The
movement of valve 20 into casing I0 is limitedv by the portions 2 la on the prong 2|. The water isthus forced into the chamber in casing 10 and when this chamber is filled or partly filled the water will be forced out through tube I and into the hose connected thereto or the hose connected to projection Ill. 'The operator can hold the nozzle ,comprising members 38 and 4| and if a solid stream of water is desired the nozzle will be operated with the strip 42 inthe position shown in Fig. 6; Should it. be desired to spray the water the operator will move his fingers around member and will move the same inwardly over the discharge opening in "tube 4|. A spray can thus be directed on the fire. the incendiary bombs used in air raids the metal magnesium is used.v Thiscan be-bet'ter. extine guished by the use of a spra thereon than by directing a solid stream of water on it. With the nozzle shown and described a solid stream or V spray can be had at will. The device can be' easily carried on the arm by means of the looped or closed strap 36. It will be understood that the screen M will act to keep solid particles from entering the pump. In case of emergency the device could be placed right in the bathtub *and stirrup portion 34a would then engage the bottom of the tub and be submerged in the water.
All parts of the device are so constructed that they can bemade of iron or steel and easily galvanized. The casing l0 and the pump cylinder l3 can be galvanized inside and out and this will be done before theends of casing I are closed. With the pump rod 22 having an open end this rod can also easily be galvanized inside and out. The same will be true of the tubes With and 4| as Well as the parts attached thereto. By means of screw 35 the strap and standard 34 can be readily assembled or very quickl detached if desired.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efficient fire extinguishing device or stirrup pump. As described, the same can be used with a smaller hose or it can be quickly attached to an ordinary garden hose. The latter is usually available in most residences. The structure is simple and compact and comprises few parts. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
