Pocket perfume sprayers of the containerpiston type. actually known comprise a cylindrical pump barrel within which can be moved, against the action of a spring, a hollovv piston forming a container for the liquid to be sprayed. This container, Which is closed by a removable plug allowing its filling up, is perforated, at its bottom, with an air inlet channel normally closed by a spring valve and contains two tubes: one mnnected to the chamber of the said valve and feeding the air compressed during the displacement of the container-piston above the liquid contained in the said container, and the other dipping in the liquid and connected to a spraying nozzle opening to the exterior of the container-piston at the upper part of the latter, through an orifice of small cross section.
in these perfume sprayers, the liquid contained in the container-piston is delivered under pressure by the air admitted in the container-piston and projected in a pulverized condition by the nozzle which is secured on the body of the said piston, Whilst in other perfume sprayers, the said nozzle is secured in the removable plug closing the container-piston.
Whatever may be the location' of this nozzle, the tube feeding the liquid to the said nozzle and dipping in the container-piston is compulsorilybent at its upper part in order to be connected to the said nozzle, so that the cleaning of this tube, in case of obstruction, is practically impossible.
ln case the spraying nozzle is carried by the removable plug the said feeding tube is, Jfrom this fact, rigid with the said plug and is thus exposed, during the opening and closing operations of the container-piston, to shocks capable of bending it, of obturating it and of rendering the perfume sprayer useless.
Finally, in the lrnown perfume sprayers,
it .has been proposed for preventing the liquid from flowing away, in the closed position of these perfume sprayers, to obturate 'the outlet orifice of the spraying nozzle, but the means used up to now have not permitted to obtain the result sought since the majority of actual perfume sprayers have the great disadvantage, as is Well known, of leaking.
The resent invention has for object a pocket per ume sprayer which is so devised as to remedy all the above mentioned inconveniences, and which is essentially characterized by the following points:
1. The liquid feeding tube is removably secured, by one of its ends, in the bottom of the container-piston, so as to be easily Withdrawn in case of need, and it is fitted with some play, at its other end, in an orifice which is provided in the center of the removable plug of the container-piston, this latter orifice opening in the conical bottom of a chamber formed in the said plug and connected to the spraying nozzle by a channel opening in the said chamber at a` certain point of the conical bottom of the latter.
2. A needle obturator is mounted in the chamber of the removable plug and is arranged in such a mannerthat it can be actuated from the exterior of the latter and brought:
(a) Either in contact with the seat formed by the conical bottom of the chamber for simultaneously interrupting the communij cation of the latter with the interior ofy the container-piston and with the atmosphere and thus ensuring the closing of the perfume sprayer in a perfectly fluid-tight manner;
(b) Or out of contact with the seat for reestablishing the simultaneous communication of the said chamber with the interior of the container-piston and with the atmosphere for allowin at this moment, upon operation of the per urne sprayer, the admission into this chamber of a mixture of liquid and air under pressure and the projection of this mixture in a finely divided condition through the spraying nozzle.
By means ofthe above mentioned arrangement, the tube feeding the liquid into the chamber of the removable plug is therefore entirely independent of this latter; moreover, it does not present any bend and fits, by screwing, in a central boss of the bottom of the container-piston, so that after removal of the plug, it can, in its turn, be conveniently withdrawn and cleaned if necessary.
Furthermore, owing to the fact that the free end of this tube is fitted with some play in the orifice of the chamber formed in the plug, the said chamber, in the opening position of the obturator, receives, during the normal operation of the perfume sprayer, at the same time as the liquid fed by the above starting tube, a certain quantity of the air compressed by the displacement of the piston and which ensures the drawing along of the liquid when issuing` from the starting tube,
through the chamber and the nozzle of the perfume sprayer, thus appreciably promoting the atomization of this liquid.
In the preferred form of construction of the perfume sprayer in accordance with the invention, the needle obturator comprises a screw-threaded rod in engagement with an inner screw-thread formed in the plug and is rigid with the cap covering the said plug and constituting an operating member allowing to impart to the said needle obturator angular displacements inthe suitable directions for closing and opening the perfume sprayer.
F or limiting this displacement, in the direction for opening the needle obturator and preventing the accidental removal of the latter, its rod is provided with a reduced portion of a certain length in which is fitted a stop member which can be constituted by a screw secured in the plug, or by a slotted washer fitted on the reduced portion of the obturator rod and acting as a spring so as to hook over a boss, of suitable shape, of the said plug.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood a form of construction of the pocket perfume sprayer made in accordance with the said invention will be described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section made according to the axis of the open perfume sprayer.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the perfume sprayer closed.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the device controlling the opening of the needle obturator.
Fig. 4 is a detail of this modification.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the perfume sprayer in accordance with the invention comprises, in the known manner, a cylindrical pump barrel 1 perforated, in its bottom 3, with an air inlet hole 2, and within this pump barrel a hollow piston 5 action of a spring 4.
This piston 5 constitutes the container en` closing the liquid to be atomized and is closed, atone end, by a screw plug 7 allowing the filling up of the container-piston 5 which is closed, at its other end, by a bottom 8 provided with a cup leather 9.
In this bottom 8, is formed a channel 10 which, opening in the pump barrel 1 is connected, at its other end, to a tube 11, arranged in the container-piston and of suitable length for opening above the level of the liquid contained in the said container-piston.
This channel 10 is normally closed by `a spring valve (not shown) so arranged as to open during the strokes of the contalnerpiston within the pump barrel for allowingl the air compressed in the latter, to pass, in the known manner, through the tube 11, into thel container-piston 5 above the level of the liquid contained in the latter for expelling this liquid to the exterior through the spraying nozzle of the perfume sprayer fed by a tube 12 dipping in the said liquid.
In accordance with the present invention, this liquid starting tube 12 is arranged inthe axis of'the container-piston 5, within which` it is'removably secured by screwing of one of its ends in a boss 13 which is formed on the bottom 8 of the container-piston and has a sidetopening 14 for the admission of the liquiclinto the tube 12.
This liquid starting tube 12 is, asshown in the drawing, a straight tube which, is fitted withso'me play, at its free end, into an orifice 15 formed according to the axis of the plug 7 closing the container-piston and is centered, for entering the said orifice 15, by engagement in a guide constituted by a slotted ring 30 secured in the container-piston and having, at its center, a socket 31 in which loosely passes the tube 12 and which is made integral with thering 30 by means of arms.
lVith this arrangement, the tube 12 is entirely independent of the plug 7 and, from this fact, after removal of the said plug,it can be conveniently separated by unscrewing from the container-piston, and cleaned, when necessary, then put back intowplace with the same facility.
According to the invention, the plug 7 is' obturator adapted to ensure the fluid-tight closing of the perfume sprayer when' the -latter is not in use and when it occupies the can be mwed longitudinalkgagainst the fjcollapsed position shown in Fig. 2, in which the container-piston 5 is within the pump barrel 1 and is secured to the latter in the known manner by a bayonet fastening, the
through the plug 7 which carries the engaging elements 2O and 21 of which are respectively carried by the bottoms of the said piston 5 and of the pump barrel 1.
This obturator is mounted in the plug 7 and comprises a rod 22 terminated by a cone 23 and having a screw-threaded portion in enrendered rigid with the cap 25.
This cap 25 covers the top of the plug 7 and is provided with a knurled ring allowing to impart to the needle obturator 23 a movement of rotation in one direction or the other.
IVhen the cup 25 is turned on the direction for screwing in, the needle obturator 23 tits at the end of its displacement, as shown in Fig. 2, against the conical seat 17 formed in the bottom of the hole 16, and simultaneously closes the orifice 15 of the plug andthe channel 18 provided in the latter, thus preventing any entrance of air in the container-piston and any eventual issue from the latter, through the channel 18 and through the spraying nozzle 19, of the liquid which would tend to fiow away through the tube 12, even in the inverted or inclined position of the perfume sprayer, the. fluid-tight obturation of which is thus ensured in an absolutely perfect manner.
On the contrary, when the cap 25 is turned in the direction for unscrewing, the needle obturator 23 is moved away from the conical seat 17, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and thus uncovers the orifice 15 and the channel 18 formed in the plug 7, thus put-ting the interior of the container-piston 5 in communication with the atmosphere, as. clearly shown in Fig. 1.
If, in this position of the needle obturator 23, the container-piston 5 is no longer retained within the pump barrel 1 by releasing of the bayonet fastening 20-21, the spring 4 pushes the said piston 5 outside the pump barrel 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and the projection, through the nozzle 19, of the li uid enclosed in the container-piston 5, is obtamed at every movement causing the said container-piston to reenter the pump barrel.
By means of the arrangement of the perfume sprayer in accordance with the invention, the air, compressed at each re-entering stroke of the containerpiston 5 and fed into the latter, above the level of the liquid by the tube 11, is partly used for delivering the said liquid, through the tube 12, in the chamber 26 of the needle obturator 23, whilst another portion of this compressed air enters the said chamber 26 by passing through the annular channel formed by the interval comprised between the orifice 15 and the tube 12` and is used for drawing along the liquid issuing from the said tube 11, mixing with the latter in the chamber 26, and ensuring its circulation through the channel 18 and its projection, in a finely divided condition, through the nozzle 19.
For limiting the unscrewing stroke of the needle obturator 23 and preventing the accidental escape of the latter, the plug 7 can be provided, as shown in Fig. l, with a radial screw 27 the inner non-threaded end of which fits in the portion 24 of the rod of the obturator, and forms an abutment for stopping the latter in the direction for unscrewing.
For the same purpose use might be made of the slotted metal ring 28 shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the said ring being fitted, by its slot 29, on the reduced portion of the obturatior rod and being retained by its resiliency, on a boss 32 formed in the plug 7 (Fig. 3).
A spider serves to support the outer end of the tube 12 with limited movement in the piston 5 and consists of an outer ring 30 frictionally engaged within the piston and joined to a hub 3l through which latter the tube 12 is arranged.
The above constructional arrangements are of course given by way of example only; the forms, materials and dimensions of the constituent parts, as well as the constructional details, can be modified without departing thereby from the principle of the invention.
Claims:
l. In a pocket perfume sprayer of the container-piston type, a removable plug closing the outer end of the container piston and having a discharge passage communicating with the interior of said container and terminating in a spray orifice, a liquid discharge tube removably secured at its inlet end in the bottom of said container and having its outer end free, said outer end being disposed within said passage and spaced from the walls thereof.
2. A pocket perfume sprayer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plug is-provided with a chamber opening into the discharge passage and having a. seat at its point of juncture with the discharge passage, a needle valve mounted in the chamber and arranged-.s0 as to he. actuated from the exterior of the latter for controlling the opening or closing of the tube for spraying the liquid perfume thus ensuring the closing of the perfume.

A pocket perfume sprayer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plug is provided with'a chamber opening into the dlscharge passage I and terminating in a seat at its point of june# ture with the said passage, a needle valve ad justably threaded in the chamber for coacting With the seat and the outer end of the tuhe, a reduced stem projecting from the valve, a cap carried by the stem and covering the plug and constituting an operating member for the valve, and a stop member mounted in the plug for limiting the unscrewing stroke of the valve, substantiallyv as and for the purposes set forth.
