Description

2 Claims.
This invention relates to a fire warning or alarm, the general object of the invention being to provide a whistle having a cartridge or hollow body connected therewith containing fluid held in place by a fusible partition so that if a fire occurs the high temperature will melt the partition thus permitting the fluid to escape through the whistle and thus produce a whistling noise.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar-view through another form of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 the numeral l indicates a tubular body having a notch 2 adjacent one end with a partition 3 extending across said end portion between the end and the notch and forming a small opening 4 between itself and a wall of the body at the notch so that when the body is blown into a whistling noise is produced in the well known manner.
In carrying out my invention I provide a cartridge or second tubular member 5 which has one end reduced and externally threaded as shown at 6 to be threaded in the open end of the body I which is internally threaded as shown. This body 5 contains a fluid under pressure but may contain carbon dioxide and the cartridge or member 5 is closed by a partition I of fusible material. Thus when the device is subjected to intense heat, such as that produced by a fire, the partition I will melt so that the contents of the member 5 will pass through the hole 4 and notch 2 and thus produce a whistling noise to notify those within hearing that a fire has broken out adjacent the device. The outer ends of both the member I and the member 5 are rounded and the outer end of the member i is formed with a perforated lug 8 for receiving a ring 9 which enables the device to be hung up.
In that form of the invention shown in Figure 2 the parts I and 5' are formed integrally or in one body with the fusible partition E placed in the part B and t from the partition t which forms the hole 4' adjacent the notch 2. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that shown in Figure 1.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, claimed as new is:
1. A fire signal of the class described comprising a tubular body having a notch in a part thereof, a partition in the body adjacent the notch and forming a hole at the notch, a fusible partition in the body adjacent the first-mentioned partition and that part of the body between an end thereof and the fusible partition containing fluid which will produce a whistling noise as it passes through the hole and the notch upon the melting of the fusible partition, said body being formed of two parts with one part having the notch therein and the hole forming partition and with the other part carrying the fusible partition, that end of said other part carrying the fusible partition being threaded in the end of the body adjacent the hole forming partition therein.
2. A portable signal of the class described comprising a tubular body closed at both ends and having a notch in a side part thereof spaced from one end, said notch including a sloping wall and a straight wall, said straight wall being farthest from said end, a partition member extending across the body adjacent the notch with one face of the partition member in substantial alignment with the straight wall of the notch and said partition member having an opening therein forming a passageway between the notch and the space between the partition member and the other end of the body and. a fusible partition extending across the body adjacent the first partition member and between said first partition member and said other end of the body, said other end of the body containing fluid which will produce a whistling noise as it passes through the opening and the notch upon the melting of the fusible partition and suspension means at one end of the body.
