PACKAGE ATTACHMENT Filed Aug. 23, 1939 INVENTOR.

Patented Sept. 8, 1942 PACKAGE ATTACHMENT Maurice Garbaty, Larchmont, N. Y.
Application August 23, 1939, Serial No. 291,466
1 Claim.
My invention relates to stilfening devices for merchandise packages and more particularly to supports for packages which when once emptied are discarded.
The stiffening devices according to my invention are adapted for repeated use in holding packages which when emptied may be thrown away such as those made of cardboard, paper and the like and containing various kinds of merchandise as cereals, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes and other materials.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved support preventing the collapse of the package while its contents are partially or wholly removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment which will prevent the crushing of the contents of the package such as cigarettes and which will assist in preserving the goods in good condition and in a fixed position when the package is partially emptied.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment with an ejector for the goods in the package, preferably for cigarettes, which will not damage or distort the goods to be ejected.
In order to carry out my invention I provide a supporter comprising a self-locking rack conforming generally to the shape and size of the package to be supported, a movable adapter for the goods in the package and preferably an ejector for the goods comprising for instance a slide sliding up and down in guide channels provided in one leg of the supporting rack or frame.
The support is designed to be applied to and locked in engagement with the package and to become, while so engaged, a part of the package giving it shape and stiffness.
In the following description the invention will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawing as embodied, for example, in an attachment for cigarette packages.
Referring to the drawing in which the reference characters in the several figures denote like parts:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal central-sectional view of an usual cigarette package partially empty with the new device applied to it, the adapter being moved toward the delivery side of the package.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting device in accordance with Fig. 1, showing the lower portion of the ejector removed from its guide channels.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, showing a spring actuated gripping member of the ejector-slide in active position during the upward stroke of the ejector.
Fig. 4 is a similar view as Fig. 3, illustrating the gripping member yielding to inactivity during the downward movement of the ejector-slide.
The device shown in the drawing consists of an U-shaped rack HE]. Two down pointing legs- !9 and III] are inserted between the goods it and the inside of the wrapper [3. The horizontally disposed leg M of the rack Ill rests on the top of the package l3 which is open.
The leg [4 is provided with a longitudinal slit l5 through which slides a gripper [5, same being part of a movable plate I! rigidly connected with a downwardly disposed plate l8 to be utilized as an adapter to support firmly the cigarettes in the package. The plate l8 will be inserted into the wrapper [3 between the latter and the cigarettes l2, opposite to the leg II at the initial attachment of the stiffening device to the package. I
On both length-sides of the leg l4 channels it are formed as guides for the plate I1.
On the delivery side of the device the slit l5 has an enlarged portion I5 suitably dimensioned to permit the proper discharge of the goods.
The legs Ill and H! as well as the plate 18 are tapered at their extreme downward ends to facilitate the insertion of the device in the wrapper.
The leg I l l adjacent to the delivery side is provided with two channels 20 in which the ejectorslide 2| is guided. The ejector-slide 2| has an opening 22 on two sides of which are formed two ears 23 between which a gripper 24 is pivotally connected. The gripper is recessed at 25 to receive a resilient tongue 26 which is manufactured on the ejector slide 2 l.
The devices according to the invention are used as follows:
The attachment is inserted between the inside of the wrapper and the contents thereof, the top part of the package having been removed. Whenever any cigarettes are discharged the adapting member l8 of the device is slowly advanced towards the delivery side to fill up the empty space and to fix the remaining cigarettes 12 in a manner to prevent their shifting.
The working of the discharging device is more clearly illustrated in the detailed drawing of the Figures 6 and 7:
The spring actuated gripper 24 is rendered to an active position during the upward stroke of the ejector-slide 2|, whereby the gripper wedges slightly against the cigarettes taking them along just by a frictional-contact.
At the return motion of the slide 2! the gripper 24 will yield to inactivity by just stroking softly along the cigarettes as shown in Figure 4.
I have described preferred embodiments of my invention but it is understood that numerous changes and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
An attachment to be inserted in a merchandise package comprising a top plate provided with a discharge opening, to be placed on the top of an opened package, downwardly directed plates to be inserted in a package between the wrapper and the goods in said package one of said plates being integrally connected with said top plate at its discharge opening, another one being movable to act as a promoter and adapter of the goods contained in said package, and an ejector consisting of a plate sliding up and down in guide channels provided in said plate integrally connected with the top plate at the discharge opening said up and down slidable plate having an opening therein, an inwardly bowed gripper plate pivoted to said plate at the lower edge of said opening and means resiliently pressing said gripper plate inwardly through said opening a predetermined distance, said bowed plate acting as a gripper engaging the wrapper of the cigarette to be ejected during the upward stroke of said plate.
